I’m figuring more like $90-something million for the 4-day X-Men 3 gross…just a hunch.
Try more like $130 to $140 million, this weekend. It did almost $45 million on its FIRST DAY. Who would have thought that?
That is just sad. Brett Ratner not only re-used the forest sets from “Elektra.” He recycled that film’s vacuous awfulness. I wanted to slap the people who were clapping when I saw it.
Except Elektra was more like an extended episode of Alias than a real comic book movie like X3.
This is too bad, because the movie is quite average. See the movie, then read Roger Ebert’s review. He gets into the movie’s plot in more detail that the movie ever thinks of doing, in his first paragraph and a half.
The movie can only bask in the success of marketing it everywhere, and blasting everyone in the country fast-food style with X3. Also, NewsCorp and Fox using its new secret weapon of MySpace helped them just a liiiiiitle bit. On MySpace, if you add X-Men The last Stand as your “freind”, they make it so you can have a “Top 16 Friends” on your main page instead of a “Top 8 Friends”. This is a very coveted Myspace ability, so Fox used this to open a very mediocre film, and the good ol’ USA smiled while being forced fed.
If there was ever a lesson in how much a good date and what other films can do for your box office, this is it.
I will not claim to have predicted that it had a shot at toppling SPIDER-MAN’s $114M opening, but $90M for the entire 4 day holiday weekend was always suspect. Fox took a gamble that by not opening the film on Wednesday (which has become almost de rigueur for Memorial Day) it would pump up the weekend numbers. It paid off.
Variety must have been having some pre-weekend beers & joints when they came up with the scenario that DA VINCI would sap patrons. Sorry, but X-MEN 3 always was going to be the choice for families. You might argue that moms and daughters will go see DVC, but when most parents ask their kids “Hey, let’s all go to the movies. What will it be?” I don’t see them jumping on their beds going “Da Vinci Code! Da Vinci Code!!!”
To really make things ripe for a big weekend, X-3 benefited from having underperforming films in the weeks leading up to it. POSIEDON was never a serious threat unless it had turned out to be a surprisingly good film (lord knows it wasn’t), but MISSION IMPOSSIBLE stumbling really helped.
Opening the summer with a sequel no one wanted (the problems with Cruise’s image were out of Paramount’s control and not foreseeable when production started) that then failed to impress anyone (has a big popcorn movie ever had such a tepid climax before?) primed the pump beyond Fox’s expectations. The zeitgiest began to hunger for what it expects in the summer – the effects-laden fantasy film.
Just a pity that the actual film wasn’t better. Across the board X-3 is a testament that without a gifted visonary either directing it or producing it, a studio film will always be an exercise in mediocrity. Especially one such as this that is so tightly controlled by the studio. As god-awful a crapfest that REVENGE OF THE SITH is, I could put that DVD in and watch it with the dialogue channels turned off just to be entertained by the sheer spectacle.
Kelsey Grammer’s best opening ever!
Deeply, numbingly average. Barely worth a matinee price…and I won’t bother to get it on DVD. Boring in places, with the expected joy of Ian, and the unexpected joy of Kelsey Grammer’s buoyant performance. Other than that…it beat cleaning the cat box, but not by much.
