“Indie” double-dipping?

I didn’t even watch the Indiana Jones DVD box set that came out in October 2003, so you can bet your ass I never would’ve paid for a limited deluxe “Indiana Jones Trilogy” DVD~set inside a “leather-bound box with additional deleted scenes, making-of docs, two large trade paperbacks and several CDs worth of John Williams’ scoring”…no effin’ way. But had this package been released I would have probably tried to score a freebie from Paramount Home Video or, failing that, tried to convince my homies at West L.A.’s Laser Blazer to let me rent one for a weekend. In any case, this is a good rant by Cinematical’s Mark Beall because…well, in his own words: “You are now looking at your piddly little boxed set with scorn and contempt, once again hating George Lucas and his fan-destroying DVD marketing. I wouldn’t fret if I were you, though, this [October 2003] set has double-dipping all OVER it, which means you’ll probably be able to pay another large chunk of cash for what you should have been able to buy the first time around.”

Don’t people have anything better to do than hate George Lucas. Either buy the DVDs or don’t. There’s no law that says if you’re a Star Wars fan, you have to buy every bit of media offered by Lucasfilm. You know a comprehensive box set is coming, either for regular DVD or Hi-def. Don’t want to buy what’s offered now…then WAIT. Star Wars fans want everything RIGHT NOW, but when it doesn’t meet “their” expectations, they go running for the bottle and pacifier. It’s really not that serious. Case in point. Sin City and the first X-Men offered bare bones DVDs initially. I knew better iterations were coming, so I waited. Didn’t complain, just waited and bought the better editions when released. Like i said, it’s not that serious.

  2. I really don’t see the problem here because a) I wouldn’t want trade paperbacks or any more John Williams score recordings than I already have, b) the leather packaging isn’t particularly attractive, and c) if there’s one thing I hate, it’s “special packaging” that requires the films to be included in crappy CD cases (the usually great Anchor Bay did this with their limited edition DVD of The Wicker Man and a few other sets, which really annoyed me).
Anyway, I think the current Indiana Jones set is just fine and, the more sets the merrier, as far as I’m concerned. If you’re happy with the set you have — you wouldn’t have bought it if there was a problem with it — ignore future sets and just let the die-hards eat it up. There are discs I’ve bought 3-4 times and I don’t have a problem with that because, when you buy a disc a second or third time, you’re paying for the features, not the movie (usually).

  3. Jeff actually watched two-thirds of the 2003 Indiana Jones DVDs.

I remember this piece because he takes the absurd position of dopey-ass LAST CRUSADE being superior to hard-rockin’ RAIDERS.
Read Alexandra DuPont’s smart review of the trilogy DVDs here: http://www.dvdjournal.com/reviews/a/adventuresindianajones.shtml
She rightly demotes LAST CRUSADE and makes a good case for TEMPLE OF DOOM’s little-recognized merit.
“Get back in your AT-AT, General Veers!”

  4. Anyone who can’t see the “dark side” so to speak of this excessive waste, should drop the $50+ it’s going to cost.
So glad I waited for the Kingdom of Heaven DC, Sin City, etc.
By the way — where is the SE of Kill Bill 1,2??

  5. Jeff, this sidebar ranting about DVD double-dipping is bizarre. First, you complain that WB is trying to milk suckers by … announcing that there will be two seperate ‘Blade Runner’ releases and detailing people as to what will be on each one. (This for a DVD only released in 1998.) Now you’re reading up on proposed special editions that didn’t happen that people are complaining about on websites and citing that these double-dips *might* happen someday?
Dude, if you need a list of needless double dips, just ask. They’re all over the Internet. If you’re gonna rant, rant about Bruckheimer’s mindless “Unrated extended cuts”.
I mean, you did notice this DVD isn’t actually coming out right?

  6. The Bruckheimer “Unrated” trio weren’t mindless (at least the DVDs weren’t): the previous releases were non-anamorphic.
Of all of Lucas’s egrigious DVD sins, I don’t really see this one as rating very high. Warner got into a habit of re-releasing all their movies in a giant collectors box with lithographs, collectible booklets, etc that catered exclusivly to the rich and obsessive. Here’s the Citizen Kane version:

The new Indy Box strikes me as something similar.

I actually like Indiana Jones more than Star Wars, but I didn’t buy the box, either. I just saw the local theatrical re-releases. But I got screwed on
Last Crusade, since the studio only sent a pre-production print to play at my revival theater. The background music was not entirely finalized and the print suffered from black-outs, and nicks and scratches. If it was Star Wars, I could deal with it, but a movie coming out from 1989 should not look that hideous.
JD: The deleted scenes would be nice.
Jason: I actually prefer Last Crusade to Raiders, too. The girl in Raiders isn’t very attractive, and they waste too much time in the classroom in the first film. Plus that “government conspiracy” ending felt tacked on. But Temple of Doom is still the black sheep in the trilogy.

  8. Any word if this is going to have the fan boys remaking of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”? I had read somewhere that they were thinking of including it on the next issue of the Indiana Jones series.

  9. I dont hate George. I just think he doesnt’t give a rats ass. Look at what hes doing to fans with the long awaited release of the Original Trilogy coming out end summer. After years of fans practically begging for a DVD transfer of the non SE versions of SW, something George said would never happen, he finally gave in to fan demand but then flips us the fat middle finger by shitting into market the discs we already own with the Original Trilogy added as supplementary
material in a non-anamorphic transfer. You read that right. In the year 2006 Lucasfilm is putting out the long awaited original Star Wars on DVD and its not even going to be fucking enhanced for Widescreen TVs. If thats not a middle finger i dont know what is. End rant. J

  10. Is someone holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy this or something?
Why do people bitch about DVD releases? Buy the one you want, don’t buy the one you don’t want. Pretty damn simple.

  11. Zac: True. I mean the only reason George is releasing the OT is because the Special Editions didn’t sell as well as expected in 2004, at least compared to Finding Nemo. So I don’t see why people have to buy the films in ’06, when it’s obvious the fans have more economic power(Dare I say force?) than they realize.

  12. …and for the record, I for one am not going to buy the OT when it comes out on DVD. After years of waiting for the DVDs, ive decided to just stick with my LDs. I know a lot of fans are going to forego this release as well once they see the tech specs. Lucafilm lameness….

  13. When the Lord of the Rings came out with a slim version they let it be known UP FRONT that a better version was coming out. That wasn’t the case for Indiana Jones. I know I was left with the impression that if I did not buy it the first week at the 30% discount at Best Buy I would just have to buy it later for even more. If Lucas or whoever let it be known that a better version is coming out later on that would be playing fair.
