Kevin Smith on the wowser, emotionally rousing response to Clerks II after Friday night’s Salle Debussy showing in Cannes, which ended with an eight-minute standing ovation…guess I shoulda stuck around. The word “triumphant” does not seem wholly inappropriate.

I wanted to see this before, because I’m a fan. But that’s a little amazing.
And what’s this I hear about a 20 minute ovation for PAN’S LABYRINTH?
Not entirely interested, based on the clips I’ve seen, but I’ll consider it. Part of me’s glad, cus Kev’s always been in Quentin’s shadow, even though his dialogue’s more original, but part of me is skeptical, because I’ve been burned by Jersey Girl and Jay and Silent Bob. Even if it’s good, will it just be an excuse for him to continue milking the franchise, instead of doing something challenging?

Smith has nothing in himself to challenge. All his fans just want the same, juvenile crap he has been spewing out for years. Remember when he was kissing goodbye to the whole Jersey thing? We all knew that it was nothing but posturing. The guy has no growth in him at all as a filmmaker and he admits this himself, but it is obvious that he is, in the classic sense, a one trick pony. He doesn’t have the skill to even direct a script that isn’t of his own origin. He is content to make jokes about sexual things that makes teenage boys cream their pants, but little if anything in the way of real substance. His comedy is childish and his feeble attempts at a bigger statement (Dogma, Chasing Amy) ring as false as everything else he has done. the truth is that Smith’s audience has grown up (we hope!) while he never got past career puberty.
One of the best laughs I ever had was at the beginning of Dogma, watching the widescreen image come up. Just the idea of this guy shooting in such a frame was laughable. The only thing worse then his ham fisted writing/directing is his ham disted visual style. Blind people have more vision.

I did like Amy and Dogma, though. But yeah, I’d rather he just do the cartoon movie and move on to Green Hornet. Gotta agree with John. I have been in cinemas all over the world and have never heard some stupid 8 minute applause. I understand it is Cannes and the French love to blow smoke up a filmmaker’s ass, but come on. if they gave an 8 minute ovation to this crap, then what does that say about anything shown over there. You have to wonder.
I know they do do the ovation thing cause I have seen it on the A History of Violence DVD but the applause means little. AHOV was one of the best of 05 and didn’t do squat in the States. Grain of salt, everyone/ NEXT!
A History of Violence did poorly, because it was a horrible adaptation of a pulp comic which-like V for Vendetta-the director chose to politicize instead of sticking to the story.

It’s a shallow post-Columbine commentary which was done slightly better by Todd Solondz in Storytelling.

That’s the defense people make for Kubrick’s Shining and Clockwork Orange, but I agree with the authors on those too. A History of Violence the movie had no plot, and was just making it up as it went along, just like the movie version of Naked Lunch. Cronenberg may be an arthouse hack, but he’s still a hack.
