“Lennon” trailer

The trailer for David Leaf and John Scheinfeld ‘s The U.S. vs. John Lennon (Lionsgate, 9.06).

Speaking of which, I wonder when Jarett Schaeffer‘s Chapter 27, a drama about the activities of Lennon murderer Mark David Chapman just before the 12.8.80 shooting. No distributor attached — the IMDB says it’s in post. Leto looks correctly creepy with his bulked-up weight and dyed Chapman hair.

  1. Ugh. My friend used to joke that I looked like Chapman…In retrospect, I wonder if he wasn’t sent by Reagan to kill him the way Nixon probably sent Sirhan Sirhan to kill RFK. After all, the killers both read Catcher in the Rye…Anyway, conspiracy theory rants aside, I don’t see how it helps anyone to make a movie about the guy anymore than the ones with Charles Manson. The movies
based on Ed Gein like Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are successful, because they’re fictionalized accounts of the events which occured, not re-enactments which make you feel like crap after watching them.

  2. Yep, that’s Lindsay Lohan … she’s ready for those Adult Films, don’t you know? Interpret that in any way you’d like.

  3. Something tells me that if it had been Paul McCartney who’d been shot, no one would be calling for a boycott of the subsequent movie.

  4. “In retrospect, I wonder if he wasn’t sent by Reagan to kill him the way Nixon probably sent Sirhan Sirhan to kill RFK.”
Jesus Hockeystick Christ, Sirhan Sirhan was a Palestinian nutcase who killed a pro-Israel American politician a year after the Six-Day War. It really is that simple sometimes.
Likewise, until you can figure out what exactly Ronald Reagan is supposed to have gained from Lennon’s death, postulating he might have had him killed a month before taking office is pretty damn silly.

  5. Mike Gebert.
    Go eat another cheeseburger.
Watch Caddyshack again for the 50th time.
When you’re done read a book.
    Do some research.
I bet you like to tell people that everything really is that simple all the time.
    Like a mantra.
    Makes you feel less anxious.
There are people in this world who have the ability to have other people killed and get away with it and no one cares.
Maybe when you grow up you’ll understand.
Who knows who did what to whom and why they did it and whether or not there was a conspiracy.
    That’s not the point.
The point is that I bet you’re one of those people who said 9/11 was just like a movie.
Get some help for your disassociation.
    It’s so 2003.

  6. You do realize that none of that is an answer to my question (the eternal question about conspiracies, it even has a Latin form, quo bene?) What would Reagan have gained by killing an over-the-hill MOR artist who had been culturally significant ten years earlier– when such a plot might have been at the risk of everything his political career had been for?
If you were about to get into office to cut taxes and fight the evil empire, would YOU go shoot a Beatle? Seems pretty silly on its face to me. Oh, but I’m a sheeple and you’re so wise, you seem to be implying. Well, nobody’s as gullible as a cynic, they’ll fall for any conspiracy, the more ridiculous the better.
I’ll bring the cheeseburgers if you’ll quit bogarting that joint, man.

  7. Mike: “What would Reagan have gained by killing an over-the-hill MOR artist who had been culturally significant ten years earlier– when such a plot might have been at the risk of everything his political career had been for?
You can’t have a massive weapons build-up, death squads in South America, and an invasion of Lebanon with popular peaceniks around…And Reagan did a lot of things which put his career at risk, and still got away with them.
