McAdams as Lois Lane
Good God…of course, of course! Rachel McAdams should have played Lois Lane in Superman Returns. Maybe Bryan Singer offered her the part and she passed or something got in the way. Given the reaction to Kate Bosworth so far, one imagines that Singer is probably wishing deep down he’d somehow gotten McAdams. Nothing on Google about this. Was she ever approached? She’s the friggin’ “it” girl. How could Singer not have wanted her?
YEAH! Okay, there’s a good idea. I saw “Superman Returns” last night, and I agree – Bosworth was a terrible choice. Nothing against her, but she just didn’t fit the bill. The movie was otherwise exceptional, though. I was trying to think of who I’d rather have had as Lois Lane, and I couldn’t come up with anyone, but this would have been infinitely better.
Gee, thanks for the credit, Jeffrey *major sarcastic eyeroll*. I posted this on the other thread.
I’m just teasing. Glad you agree with me.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with Bosworth, but McAdams would have been a great choice.
I think that Bosworth is becoming a whipping point out of people’s frustrations with the movie. I thought it was great though, so whatever.
I thought Bosworth did a great job. She might look a little bit young, but she’s a talented actress and I think she handled the role in a mature way. People are not giving her enough credit at all. I thought she pulled it off well and will only get better in the sequels.
Maybe it’s the forehead or the eyes but McAdams is definitely brainier looking than Bosworth. Yeah she would of been a better Lois Lane I think.
Maybe McAdams has no interest in standing in front of a green screen for eight hours a day.
The idea’s been around since at least 2004…

Sorry NYCBB, not gunnin’ for ya, just trying to outgoogle Jeff…but alas, nothing but this fan posting.
D’oh!
Well, at least we can ASSUME Jeff got it from me. hehe
Give Kate some credit! She did a really nice job! I really don’t understand the criticism. She is a talented actor.
Yeah, she may have been a better choice, but in Singer’s defense, in the Summer of 2004, Bosworth, not McAdams, was the “it” girl. At the time, hadn’t McAdams just come to everyone’s attention in The Notebook? Bosworth, I think, was the young woman to watch (at least, that’s what all the magazines said).
I still wish it could have been a younger, fast-talking Jennifer Jason Leigh (ala Kansas City).
It wasn’t just the magazines, Barkus. Mr. Wells himself praised Blue Crush to the skies.
I loved Superman Returns. Absolutely loved it. A grown-up film with deeply felt emotions. Wonderful. And Kate Bosworth was fine. It coulda gone to an actress a little older, but I thought Kate “got” Lois Lane. I really don’t understand why Poland and the other critics are so down on this movie. It was just beautiful. The special effects were terrific. The romantic entanglement was very well done, especially because it would have been so easy for Lois’ boyfriend to have been made a villain in disguise. Instead, he’s a great guy. I loved that.
Best popcorn flick of the year.
Keri Russell was Singer’s second choice, and she would’ve been perfect in the role.
There’s a blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse of her in that new Superman documentary.
Bosworth is just too young for the role. She looks young for her age also. It has nothing to do with her acting ability, she just wasn’t the right choice. They should have cast someone at least five years older, with more sass and gravitas.
Maybe McAdams has no interest in standing in front of a green screen for eight hours a day.
Who wants to bet Kevin Spacey recommended her after “Beyond the Sea.”
Superman Returns was fantastic. I really enjoyed it. As great as Rachel McAdams would have been I don’t think Bosworth is the weak link she’s being made out to be.
Kate Beckinsale? Nah. Too sexy. Rachel’s the “it” girl for me now.
I thought Kate did a fine job… Rachel McAdams didn’t become the it girl until last August, when Superman was already well into production, I’m sure. I’m sure Kevin put in a good word for Kate or showed Bryan her performance in his own movie.
Barkus, I agree on the younger Jennifer Jason Leigh point, but I’d cite The Hudsucker Proxy as the example.
Speaking of Superman, The Hot Button just posted this:
“Word Has It That Superman Returns’ Tuesday Night Screenings Starting At 10pm Did Between $3m & $4m And The Wednesday Number Is Looking Like Something Just Under $10 Million, aka Almost Exactly King Kong Numbers”
If that’s true…wow.
Rachel McAdams should be in EVERYTHING.
Tremendous!! Rachel McAdams would have been dead-solid perfect as Lois. Ping! Should have seen that coming. Sometimes these “what if?”s end up leaving vague dissatisfaction with the chosen players during the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. viewings (assuming a movie is re-watchable in the first place). I know I’ll watch SR again thinking, “what if. . .”
Anyway, saw SR last night. It works 100% as the rightful part III, not as a reboot (which, to be fair, it does not pretend to be). Previous graph notwithstanding, Kate Bosworth does a more than capable job as LL; some of the shredding has been very unfair. The film could have used a few judicious nips and tucks to trim it a bit, say by 10 minutes or so.
One critic’s problem with the narrative thread is actually quite spot-on. It feels a bit too meandering in places, with accumulated story-telling energy coming to halt, or at least having the brakes applied. All in all, not up to “Batman Begins” but certainly affects more deeply than X3.
If Singer cast B. Routh because of his resemblance to Christopher Reeve, then maybe he should have had Parker Posey play Lois. She has more of Margot Kidder’s quirky looks then Kate Bosworth has, and she’s a better and more mature actress.
She turned it down. She also turned down Fantastic Four.
Took me a llittle while to warm to Kate….but eventually I accepted her.
Rachel was a better choice. I’m a fan of Smallvile and she resembles the “acctitude” of the actress that characterize Lois in the show.
I so agree with the one who said Rachel McAdams should be in EVERYTHING! God I love her!!!!!!!!
I love Rachel and don’t like Bosworth. Had Rachel been in this I’d be so much more interested in going to see it. Still, it’s best for her that she didn’t. Like has been mentioned, she should stick to stand-alone projects so she doesn’t get tied down being in a series.
I agree that Rachel Mcadams would have been the perfect choice for Lois Lane. She is a more mature actor and has more box office appeal. I would have been so much more excited to see this movie if she was in it. As for Bosworth, she was pretty good in blue crush, but this role did not suit her at all. I don’t think the critics are being unfair. They’re telling the truth. She had no strength or spunk to her. Her approach was completely vulnerable, which Lois is not, not to mention there was zero chemistry between her and James Marsden. She’s not the only weak link however, the special effects scenes were far too long and Kevin Spacey was more likable than menacing.

I totally agree with this statement: She had no strength or spunk to her.
Margot Kidder’s LL was really dead-on in how I see Lois: smart, ballsy, risk-taking, a career woman with moxie. While Kate Bosworth’s Lois made me want to laugh in the theater: in what surreal world could her Lois win a Pulitzer Prize and be the top reporter of one of the best newspapers in the country? Lois Lane is supposed to be a fictionalized Christiane Amanpour type, professional, fiery and utterly capable. Bosworth looks like a girl dressing in her big sister’s clothes, and she tries to be feisty but the emotion is beyond her.
My friend and I actually both independently came up with Rachel McAdams as the perfect Lois Lane. She’s extremely pretty, is the right age, is a good actor, and from what I’ve seen of her movies, is great at being fiery and smart. Bosworth as Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter makes as little sense as Denise Richards as nuclear scientist: in other words, very very little. McAdams could’ve pulled off the role so much better, and with style and sass. Bosworth has neither.
