Mirren’s double derby
Now that the great Helen Mirren has won a Best Actress (in a Miniseries or Movie) Emmy for her performance as the Queen Elizabeth of yore in HBO’s Elizabeth I, does this affect in any way her chances of being considered as a Best Actress contender for her performance as the current Queen Elizabeth in Stephen Frears’ The Queen (Miramax, 10.6)? Or does it matter not at all?
There’s no denying that Mirren delivering two award-calibre perfs as a pair of English queens named Elizabeth in films presented the same year is a fairly striking coincidence. And I’m just sorta wondering if people are going to say (a) “Well, sure…she’s a great actress all around so the Elizabeth coincidence aside it’s right and fair that it’s double-derby time“, (b) “I don’t know…she was excellent in the HBO film and exquisite in the Frears film, but wasn’t her Best Actress Emmy sufficient? Worthy as it is, do we need to toast her other Elizabeth now that she’s already been covered?” or (c) “This is silly…if she’s excellent in the Frears film she deserves an Oscar nom and that’s that…the Emmy doesn’t mean diddly.”
I don’t know, but she deserves some type of award if she’s introduced the phrase “falling ass over tit” into the cultural lexicon.
It means every article about her is going to mention that she played both queens and already won an award for one. That has to boost her chances among Academy voters who like to vote for what everybody else is voting for, no?
Wells to Colin: “Falling ass over tit” is a line for HBO’s “Elizabeth I”, I presume? Or she said this on her own or in some other film or what? Be clear.
She used it in her Emmy speech to describe her precarious ascendance up the stairs to the mike, and it was hilarious.
Yeah, Rob got it. Apparently, Jon Steinbeck had the line in The Grapes of Wrath, which referred back then to a person falling in that manner by following through on a crazy idea.
Plus a couple of presenters picked up the “ass over tit” comment and used it in their presentation; Calista Flockhart and Colin Ferguson, I believe. Wasn’t Helen Mirren also the person who introduced “gobsmacked” to the lexicon the last time she won an Emmy? I use it now because I heard it on the Emmys (I think…)
Before the inevtiable comment comes in about why these things shouldn’t matter and Mirren should only be considered for her performance and blah-blah-blah, I should say Jeffrey’s right to be bringing this up. Horse-derby shit like this √ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì i.e., the “she’s already won enough” attitude or the “hey, she deserves an Oscar already!” vibe √ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì always plays a role.
About 7√ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì8 years ago, I recall seeing the very savvy Entertainment Weekly editor Mark Harris being interviewed the day after that year’s Emmys and bemoaning the Emmy voters’ tendency to get swayed by the Oscars. I specfically recall him saying, sarcasm dripping, “Hey, Helen Hunt, you just won that Oscar for As Good as It Gets…here, have an Emmy” (at the time, it was, like, her fourth or something).
His point was that TV people √ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì ever nursing their quiet inferiority complex vs. movie people √ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì were suggestible and easily swayed by someone’s Oscar win.
But I don’t know if that works the other way around. It’s easy to imagine a scenario in which movie people say, “Wow, Helen Mirren √ɬ¢√¢‚Äö¬¨√¢‚Ǩ≈ì here she is, winning something as mundane as an Emmy, and we’ve never given her an Oscar! Time we fixed that…”
Either way, Mirren’s handlers have their work cut out for them this fall, both good and bad.
Chris, I think there’s a difference though between if Helen Mirren had won an Emmy for being on Everybody Loves Raymond or something, and winning it for a gilt-edged HBO miniseries about Elizabeth II. Everyone recognizes that the best acting opportunities often exist in that 1% of TV that’s really top-drawer. (HBO is the new PBS.)
In fact, there’s a very direct precedent for Mirren here: Glenda Jackson in the BBC’s Elizabeth R, followed by Glenda Jackson winning the Best Actress Oscar for A Touch of Class.
It means every article about her is going to mention that she played both queens and already won an award for one. That has to boost her chances among Academy voters who like to vote for what everybody else is voting for, no?
