Santa Barbara blahs
I went to the opening-night Factory Girl party for the Santa Barbara Film Festival last night, but I couldn’t get into the groove today. I blew off the Sacha Baron Cohen discussion at the Lobero early this afternoon, and then I couldn’t bring myself to attend the Helen Mirren tribute this evening at the Arlington. I don’t know why, but maybe I’m just feeling Cohen-ed and Mirren-ed out. (A lot of us are, no?) I promise to do better tomorrow. Apologies to Roger Durling and the gang — just an “off” day. (Or something.)

A dull photo because I was too lazy to snap a better one.
borat is the most overrated film of the year…couldnt stand 90% of it
oscars will be worst in memory this year …dont see a surprise winner in the bunch
Rest up Jeff. I love this site. Thanks to all posters in the film industry. I learn a lot.
Thanks even to DZ, Busybody, and JWego (Come back).
Best kept secret: Best messageboard online.
I love COM and Munich and Casino Royale and Crank and Children of Men and Pan’s…
Babel and Borat and Dreamhoes suck big time. EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN’T SEEN 2/3 OF THEM.
Sorry for the caps.
Home of Thor
I haven’t seen Borat and only pieces of the Ali G show. However I did see Cohen’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. Basically he’s a twit–a high brow Jim Carrey circa the Ace Ventura era if that makes any sense.
Man, berkguru, you sound like a real party.
I’m not feeling Cohen-ed out. I guess its just hard for me to get tired of a comedic genius.
MatthewM:
If all you’ve ever seen of Cohen’s comedy is that awards speech, I urge you to check out the Ali G show on dvd before making any judgements on the man’s merit. He truly is a funny, insightful comedian.
The Golden Globes speech seemed to me to be just a not-so-great by-product of Cohen’s attempting to make up (most of) his jokes on the spot. I don’t think that even he’d claim it was his best work, nor very representative of his usually very unique style.
JWEgo just completely vanished as soon as hickenlooper posted, didn’t he? man. i guess that worked.
The irony is that it probably wasn’t even the real George Hickenlooper, just another one of JWEgo’s multiple personalities taking offense at himself.
Looks like I’m not going to be able to see Factory GIrl because TWC has made it increasingly difficult for New York journalists/critics (particularly onliners) to see their movies. Apparently, they had three screenings over the last two days but those who saw the movie were told they’d have to see the movie again at the all-media on Wednesday if they want to review it. I’ve been given the runaround in regards to screenings for months before being invited to the all-media on Weds night (which a.) I can’t make and b.) gives me no time to write a review) On top of that, I’ve had multiple EMails ignored and out-and-out been LIED to about there being earlier screenings than next Weds., even while one of those earlier screenings was taking place.
I probably shouldn’t be spilling like this but it’s important for people to know how badly TWC is fucking up this movie in every single possible regard. I’d been looking forward to seeing this movie since interviewing Miller over a year ago and apparently, TWC is so dead-set against any possible bad reviews from the critics in the area where Sedgwick first became famous that they’re making it impossible for anyone to really see or get behind the movie.
It won’t make any money and Weinstein will point the blame at Hickenlooper or the subject matter, I’m sure. I kind of feel bad for the movies at Sundance that got bought by TWC cause they’re essentially doomed.
