Thelma wins for Best Editing
The Best Film Editing Oscar, presented by Kate Winslet, is supposed to go to Babel ( I don’t mind if it goes to The Departed), and the Oscar goes to Thelma Schoonmaker for The Departed! A slight surprise! But a good one!

could the departed actually win besdt picture?
What was up with Mann’s complete time waster of a montage? How exactly are clips from Kill Bill (from the showdown in Japan) and Paths of Glory (those guys were supposed to be French) show America?
Mann’s montage was worthless, although I’m sure some will find the “hidden genius” in it (Wells, I’m looking at you.)
And yes, I think the Editing win is pointing at Departed winning the big prize. My prediction, Babel, has been virtually invisible.
What’s up with all of these pointless montages? And it pisses me off most that they don’t do the obvious montage: the best of 2006! There were plenty of moment from last year’s films that were AND weren’t nominated they could have and should have used. Jesus Christ, could they stop licking their own genitals over writers and AMERICA long enough to do that?
I liked the montages except for the one by Mann. The dead people montage gets to me every time. RIP Mr. Altman.

That montage by Mann was hugely weak.
There was that brief shot from Kill Bill but there were a few other shots that had at least as little do with “America” that I can’t even remember.
And if you didn’t know that shot was Kill bill…I mean it was just a close-up of Lucy Liu. Is Mann’s point that there are Asians in America?
A high school kid could have done better and from a man of Mann’s skills…well, it might be the worst thing he’s ever done.
