Beale on film critics
“In a world where everyone has an opinion — and can both share their own and seek out others online — respect for critics has taken a severe nose dive,” observes Lewis Beale in his latest Reeler essay. “But everyone seems to have forgotten that just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean it’s well-thought-out.
“None of the fanboys at Ain’t it Cool News, for example, can measure up to the chops of Jim Hoberman or Manohla Dargis. I mean, I love opera, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to write a critique of Don Giovanni — I just don’t know enough about the genre’s subtleties.
“Which raises the key question: Why are critics writing about movies like A Night at the Museum anyway? Films like this are absolutely review-proof. It’s also old news that people who want to see them couldn’t care less what any egghead says about them, and given the massive PR machines behind these films, you’d think a critic’s time would be better spent writing about deserving indies, thoughtful foreign releases or Hollywood flicks like Zodiac. You know, films that actually merit an essay.
“Even the thought of the New York Times wasting space on Norbit gives me the willies, so why bother? What does it prove? And who are they reviewing it for, anyway? Some works just do not warrant in-depth examination or critical mention. Does the New York Times Book Review cover every Danielle Steele novel? Or the TV section write about every new program on the Game Show Network?”
Mind if I ask here too? Beale says, “Some can be blamed on Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, whose popular TV show and signature thumb ratings captured the public imagination and symbolized the precipitous dumbing down of film culture.”
Question: Has Ebert ever written about or spoken out publicly on this topic? Or Siskel for that matter?
I’d say Siskel & Ebert actually *raised* film consciousness in this country, consistently exposing their mainstream audience to “small” (later, “indie”) films and foreign imports they previously never would’ve thought about seeing.
I agree with much of what Beale is saying here but on that point he’s dead wrong.
Even “Two Thumbs Up!” (TM) just doesn’t have the impact that it used to. Since Gene Siskel died, Roger Ebert appears to have gone soft on may films; and with since Ebert has been sidelined, Richard Roeper (whose criticism isn’t much better than a fanboy’s on a good day) and the Guest Critic of the Week seem to have been only killing time with their critiques. Unless Roger comes back (and given his condition, that’s anything but certain), I’d just as soon see “______ & Roeper” go the way of Premiere magazine.
Ebert answered this by pointing out that when he started reviewing at the Sun-Times, the Tribune’s reviewer was a group of lady reporters sharing the pseudonym “Mae Tinee,” and when Sneak Previews started on TV, the best-known TV reviewer was Tinker Bell, with her one-to-four bell scale (“I give The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox three bells– ding, ding, ding!”)
“How I didn’t kill film criticism,” by Roger Ebert as told to Mgmax.
Man, this Lewis Beale is one sad bastard. Once he brings up AICN writing, the whole argument just drops dead.
There’s not enough hours in the day to argue his points.
Mgmax: What about Gene Shalit? And before him, Judith Crist? I think you could make an intelligent argument that, for a brief period in the 1960s and ’70s, Crist was the best known TV and print film critic in the US. Hell, she was reviewing movies in TV Guide when it was one of the biggest selling magazines in the world.
There’s no reason to not review Norbit or any other piece of crap movie – the point of film criticism is to explain and understand trash and the motivations behind it as much as it is to appreciate the good stuff, the two go hand in hand.
Joe, please tell me you didn’t just say that Gene Shalit was any better or more important than the bell lady.
In the old days, we had a few people telling us what to think. And Ebert and Siskel arguing was great fun. Had we ever seen anything like that before on TV? Nowadays, Roeper and whomever just follow a formula. And we can’t shut everybody else up.
But why should we? This liberation of expression by a greater number demands that we at least think for ourselves a little bit. However relatively inarticulate the masses may be, thinking for themselves is much to be preferred than passively receiving one’s opinions while melted into the couch.
I totally agree that critics don’t need to review every hunk of shit that Hollywood throws at the wall of moviegoing humanity, but I still think critics should *see* all of these movies.
Not only because some random Will Ferrell comedy or The Rock actioner might accidentally be worth seeing; or because, occasionally, in the mix of all the drearily mediocre hunks of shit that blend together into a brownish-green stain on your brain, there comes a movie so tremendously, compellingly bad it is actually worth talking about and ripping to shreds (always fun reviews to read); but because a critic should always be aware of and able to follow the trends in moviemaking and moviewatching in order to keep the award worthy material that actually gets written about in perspective and in context.
There’s one reason critics review A Night at the Museum: What if it was actually good? Believe it or not, there are some dumb-looking Hollywood product flicks that are actually entertaining. Granted, they’re rare, but I like to think critics don’t serve as Captain Obvious in pointing out the bad ones, but unearthing the worthwhile ones for the rest of us.
Jeff: Well, he had a bigger audience….
I disagree about “fanboys” not bringing enough insight to the table to make their reviews worth while. I don’t mean every joe schmoe that writes in with a test screening review, but Harry and Moriarty and those guys know as much about film as Manohla Dargis, and maybe more because they leave that ivory tower pretentiousness at the door. They appreciate Antonioni and Kurosawa right alongside Roger Corman and Ed Wood. Now, their vocabularly and grammar may not be up to NY Times standards, but they definitely contribute opinions that enrich the world film criticism.

Well, I have had a little personal interaction with him over the years, but in this case I’m simply referring to what he said in Film Comment about 12-15 years ago, when someone had an article saying Sis & Eb had killed off film culture and Ebert countered thusly.
I think he’s right; the show was high middlebrow at best but that was still considerably higher than the lowbrows that preceded them on TV. Shalit was better than Tinkerbell, but still, a bit of a performing clown, so was Rex Reed; Crist was indeed probably the best of the mass-distribution bunch (apart from Pauline Kael during the year she was the reviewer for McCall’s before they fired her for dissing The Sound of Music).
“Harry and Moriarty and those guys know as much about film as Manohla Dargis”
This is highly debatable. Especially in the case of Harry, who seems to be a textbook case of arrested development (in the sad, non-Jason Bateman sense).
Film critics review the movies put out by the companies that pay for advertising in their newspaper (or, rare case, television show). And then they sometimes try to squeeze in smaller stuff when they can.
Mind if I ask here too? Beale says, “Some can be blamed on Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, whose popular TV show and signature thumb ratings captured the public imagination and symbolized the precipitous dumbing down of film culture.”

I would say Harry knows more about film, and with a more surprising breadth of knowledge, than anyone I have yet met.
Having bought Harry Knowles a couple of beers and hung out with him for a night at a hotel bar Austin, let me second that the dude does indeed know and appreciate his movies. Now, whether or not he has high standards or is the most eloquent of writers is obviously up to debate, but at least he knows his stuff.
I’m sure Harry has seen a lot of movies but that’s not the same as knowing a lot about movies in an analytical or artistic sense.
Does this critic like or dislike The Hills Have Eyes 2? It makes me happy that I don’t know, because I don’t care, I just want to feel and know the work before I go or check my reality after, that’s all. Pay attention all y’all, contextualize your work and keep your goddam egos and opinions and tastemaker crap down your pants.
The scene is a 1,300-square-mile patch of New Mexico, where the Carter family of the previous “Hills” pics met their fate at the hands of mutant psycho Quasimodo look-alikes, bio-victims of government nuclear tests. Immediately upon arriving, the “Hills 2′s’ ” National Guard patrol is set upon by the grotesque cave-dwellers, who hit and run with such eerie speed that the Guardsmen — all young and untrained — are immediately unnerved. It doesn’t do much for their confidence that the team of scientists and military they were supposed to meet have all vanished.
While nothing is as broadly political as the impalement — by an American flag — perpetrated in the 2006 “Hills Have Eyes,” the sentiments are obvious enough. Napoleon (Michael McMillian), the smartest member of the co-ed Guard group that finds itself in a hostile desert, is challenged about his lack of enthusiasm for the war.
“Presidents lie too much,” he says. He’s given little slack: “The last president who told the truth was Truman,” barks his commanding officer, Sarge (Flex Alexander), “and you know what he said? ‘The buck stops here!’ ”
Sarge and Napoleon are never going to get along, but the way things are working out with the natives, it really won’t matter.

I’d like to see Manhola Dargis write as compelling a review as this: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32030
And Sutter Kane’s comments above are spot on.
Yeah, I don’t think it is fair to disparage Siskel and Ebert for the whole two thumbs up thing. That was mainly for the tv show, and as one poster pointed out, the main draw of that show was to watch Siskel and Ebert try not to throttle one another. Roger Ebert is, perhaps, a too-generous critic, but his *written* film reviews are excellent and well-thought out. (And, it should be noted, I don’t always agree with his taste in movies.)
The Ain’t It Cool guys… A few words: I don’t go to their site looking for scholarly erudtion. As a geek myself, I want to know what my fellow nerds think of the latest genre film. If Harry doesn’t like Ghost Rider, than wow, it must really stink. Having said that, Moriarty is a very skilled reviewer and really knows his stuff. Harry has a tremendous amount of film knowledge, but he’s not trying to be David Denby. He’s just communicating his id to everyone. In this way, reviews and commentary on movies are just like any form of entertainment. They veer from entertainment (in all of its variety–from good to out-right sucky) to the more high-brow analysis. There’s room for both.

Thanks for that link, The Winchester. Laughed my ass off, then cluster-spooged.
i love reading a guy writing about his boner as much as the next person, but those enthusiastic meathead beaters have the uncanny ability to make everything they love sound like it whiffs.
And Drew, in “300,” apologizes for being brief with 1133 words, two-thirds heavy panting. I admire Wells’ doesn’t push his own critiques that much and shows his appreciation for the artform to link some. Poland won’t and when he’s got long-winder’s block, he let’s his blog flounder.
Harry Knowles may know his movies, but he is utterly defeated by his sophomoric writing style. What does it add to the discussion to fantasize about a teenage girl who can re-generate her hymen so that she’s a virgin every time she has intercourse? That little tidbit is an actual Knowles musing concerning the cheerleader on Heroes. He seems to want to be both Roger Ebert and Howard Stern. More power to him, but I’ve completely stopped reading his reviews and most of his other postings as a result.
I still read other reviews on the site like Moriarty (when he’s “allowed” to give his honest opinion) and Massawyrm. They can be crude, but they at least offer a different perspective. But Knowles? Not for this reader, anyway.
It all depends on whether or not you think movies are a serious art form or a good way to allow scabs to heal between vigorous jerkoff sessions.
If it were left strictly to critics, particularly high-falutin ones, Flags of our Fathers and Miami vice were among the best films last year, rather than among its disappointments.
The problem with bowing down to a critical super-hierarchy is that eventually the critical reception means everything, the popular reception means nothing, and your art form starts going the way of the dinosaur. See the state of the novel and literature in general. As a film connaisseur, Beale ought to be thankful that there are all these opinions out there. It’s the sign of a healthy art form that moves people.
And why write about Norbit or Night at the Museum? Because it’s fun to write a pan.

This isn’t really true depending on your source. In the Indiewire poll that was formerly the Village Voice poll, the top five movies of last year were The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, L’Enfant, The Departed, Inland Empire, and Army of Shadows, all of which are excellent.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to experience these early Ingmar Bergman films. I’ve loved his famous work and more modern work, but never these titles. They’re titles I’ve read about, but never saw. There’s a lot of FUN stuff on the list this month, this is essential films for serious cineastes. So if you’re like me, this is exciting films from the Eclipse series which have not been available till now. Important works from an incredibly important film artist.” – Harry Knowles on the new Bergman box set.
“This is exciting films.” How dare, how DARE anyone compare the wonderfully well-informed, intelligent reviews of Manohla Dargis with Harry Knowles. It is totally fine the man has not seen these movies, but to post something with such bewilderingly stupid grammar disqualifies you in any contest. He has seen many movies and done many wonderful things, but none of it had to do with his movie criticism.
I lied, I thought Drew’s “300″ critique was interesting.
