“Death Proof” in Cannes
Quentin Tarantino‘s stand-alone Death Proof — running 114 minutes, or 27 minutes longer than the version that showed in the second half of Grindhouse — is a slightly tangier and more filling thing, but it’s not what I would call significantly enhanced. There are several marginal augmentations — Vanessa Ferlito‘s lapdance for Kurt Russell‘s “Stuntman Mike” is the most significant — but none of them make you go “whoa!”
The best part of this enjoyably trashy tribute pic is still the car-chase sequence, but it’s the same version that appeared in Grindhouse so the throttle factor is unchanged. Truth be told, the sassy-chick dialogue that I had so much fun with during my first viewing plays just a tiny bit weaker the second time around. And the fact that the footage and the sound have an appropriately aged, scratchy quality in the first half but not in the second portion is still a little bit weird (i.e., curiously inconsistent).
Wouldn’t a DVD of all the alt, old, discarded car chase cuts be fun?

Even as a fan of Death Proof, to me this just sounds like Harvey desperately trying to squeeze as much juice out of his bomb as possible. All the power to him, but having seen DP on its own (not the expanded version, just the regular) I now think it plays better as part of the whole Grindhouse deal, warts and all. Stripped of the experience, it’s a nifty car chase and not much more.
Wells, do you think you need Planet Terror in front of Death Proof to make the Death Proof better?

Jeff, I also understand that there is a new sequence in black and white? Do you have a theory as to why QT switches to different formats and styles, or is it as random as it seemed in the Kill Bill films?
I understand that the House of Blue Leaves sequence switched to black and white in order to avoid the NC-17 rating, but otherwise, is there a purpose? Or is it just arbitrary “coolness”?

When Grindhouse came out last month, I pointed out that it was already #108 in imdb’s top 250 (as an indication of its popularity with those who have seen it… not including DZ). Somebody here insisted that its score would drop way down in a few weeks so I just checked… and it’s now at #63. Clearly, the movie is doing just fine with those who have seen it. I just hope the full 3-hour experience makes it to DVD at some point.

I agree to a point . . . KB was self-indulgent and bloated, but that came from a surplus of ideas. DP was the first film of his (for me) where the detours in the script felt like aimless fucking around, rather than exploring the universe in which his characters reside, and this is coming from someone that hasn’t seen the extended version.
i do think qt’s dialogue style has reached a breaking point, but only when he uses rather limited actors. i don’t think any of the supposed badass women in KB and DP are badass at all except for zoe bell, and i didn’t like her character at all. she would have been cooler silent then we get to see her in action.
an example of diminishing returns would be what i consider qt’s worst monologue ever: daryl hannah reading off a note about the effects of a black mamba in KB 2.
