“Dark Knight” teaser, Joker photos
Here’s a fairly engrossing teaser for Chris Nolan‘s The Dark Knight (Warner Bros., 7.18.08) — medium and high. It’s mainly about darkness and voices and laser light piercing same, and a simulation of what might happen to a Batman logo if it were to enter the earth’s atmosphere and start to flake apart like a faulty heat shield. Plus a relatively recent still of Heath Ledger as “the Joker” — the crude stitchwork applied to a sliced-open mouth makes for a Leatherface effect. So Joker apparently won’t be falling into a vat of acid…the purest in me may want to complain, but the realist in me thinks it’s for the best. I like the look of Ledger…he certainly looks more menacing than some previous incarnations. And we haven’t even seen him moving.
As for his voiceover, interesting choice in accent…somewhat sinister, yet somewhat desperate tone.

The Dark Knight, not Night.
These pictures, the second of which is brand new I believe, tell me that Nolan & Co. totally know how to handle this material and I have absolutely no reason to worry about this film.
The teaser is cool. To me, Ledger’s voice sounds a little like Benecio Del Toro’s Jackie Boy voice from Sin City. But I’m especially digging the still of Ledger and Maggie G. He doesn’t look like a clown, he looks like a sadistic maniac. Handling a character like the Joker is delicate because he can really derail the film if handled wrong.
This is a comic book movie that is being moved into a realistic universe, so you can’t have the Joker pop out of a vat of acid, you have to bring him to life differently and in a more plausible way.
With the long hair, Ledger is looking too much like The Crow.
I don’t want to wait a year to see this. I just rewatched Batman Begins and it still holds up. My mild disappoint of The Prestige, not withstanding, this looks good.
That’s not the Joker. That’s just a Goodfella dipped in clown make-up.
I really dug The Prestige, liked the brooding, ambiguous atmosphere of that film. I actually liked Batman Begins more the third time I saw it.

I think they are knocking it out of the park on this one. They are filming the hell out of this movie here in Chicago, doing as much location work as possible. I very much agree with Nolan’s take on these characters, even getting a better sense on this from this teaser.

Fabulous voicover work by Caine. Absolutely love the look of the Joker. This picture can’t get here soon enough. And I echo what others said about BEGINS – it gets better every time I play it.
nolan has the cast and vibe down. now if he can learn how to film action scenes….

I dunno. Batman Begins greatly exceeded my expectations and, as noted above, gets better on repeated viewings. And I love Caine’s voiceover in the trailer. But I’m still not convinced by Nolan’s/Ledger’s take on the Joker. Yes, the Joker is an amoral, homicidal maniac. But the clown aspect of his personality is still important, and has been since his very first appearance in Batman. I was very, very happy to hear Ledger laugh, because it was looking to me like they were going to completely discard that aspect of the character.
I think the acid, or something to bleach the skin, is important. But it looks like they might have gone with the thing I liked least about Burton’s Joker, the facial disfigurement, instead.
It’s all well and good to make Batman’s world more realistic, but, after all, it’s still a comic book. The pictures they’ve released of the new Batcycle tell me that Nolan hasn’t completely forgotten this. I still trust him until proven otherwise, but I’m not as happy about these new developments as some others.
I disagree that the movie continues to hold up on repeat viewings. Memento had a sense of impetus that is lacking in BB. The acting is decent in the latter film, but, as christian pointed out, it’s not as action-oriented as the previous Batman films, and, like Casino Royale, in spite of the inexperience of the lead character, you don’t feel any real sense of danger.
i loved the tone and characters of BATMAN BEGINS, but it failed on the action scale. i don’t expect an over the top matrix fest, but the fight scenes should be as thought out as everything else. i really didn’t like that overlong car chase.
and i dig ledger’s joker laugh.
