Helicopter, death, flames

This video footage from the fatal crash this afternoon of those two Pheonix news helicopters is, of course, ghastly — there’s a crash sound and then the picture goes out. (Four guys died — two pilots, two news phtographers.) But what was that Stepford Wife blonde anchor thinking as she totally ignored the visual and aural implications of what had seemingly just been broadcast?
Obviously something of a sudden, possibly catastrophic nature had just happened — it at least warranted a question or a moment of pause — and all this bimbo could could do was talk about a just-concluded car-chase scenario on the ground, which was what the choppers had been trying to shoot.

Seems kind of unfair on the anchor, there. Usually people who keep their cool under sudden pressure are lauded, but I guess when it’s a “bimbo”…
It’s pretty clear she was disturbed by what happened and rushed through to get them off the air.

For the record though, I don’t think it’s because she’s a bimbo or because she’s a woman. She’s just like every other local newsmuppet: a vaguely attractive, serious sounding, but totally vacant teleprompter reading messenger of fear and sensationalism.

How could she have known exactly what happened? The cameraman could’ve dropped his camera, for all she knew. Stations lose video feeds all the time for all kinds of dopey reasons. She had no reason to suspect a disaster at that point. She’s sticking to facts and not speculating. Good for her. What would you expect her to say? “Well, it’s obvious our helicopter has crashed and that everyone on board is now dead. And of course the only things up there were other news choppers, so I’m sure everyone in the other copter is now dead as well. We’ll have more right after this.”

News helicopter pilots do not risk their necks, literally, to see drivers meekly pull over and surrender and be read their rights. They are looking for something spectacular, a crash, hitting pedestrians or a shootout. The excitement level of that reporter when he saw the driver hop from one truck to the other with police hot on his tail was palpable.
Well, they all got their wish today, the big spectacular, only a couple of them got it a bit too up close and personal. No one deserves to die in that ghoulish a manner, but things like this were bound to happen and for what, the pursuit of non-news. Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole is just as valid today as sixty years ago; the technology has just gotten a bit better.
Hopefully, some news departments and stations will reconsider their policies as a result of what happened today. The only fortunate thing is that the crash occurred in an open park, not a residential or urban area where lots more people could have been killed.

C’mon guys. You can criticize Bush for a lot of things but I’ve always found this one absurd. How did his actions in that classroom at all impact America’s response to the attack? How did it cost any additional American lives?
He’d just been told the worst thing any president could ever hear. Cut the guy some slack. His job performance in the days and weeks after 9/11 was met with the approval of over 90% of the American people. Mistakes made since then shouldn’t somehow retroactively negate everything he’s ever done or cause us to see it in a wholly negative light.
Michael Moore loses much of his audience when he makes silly partisan point like this.

If “America is under Attack”, the President is at least supposed to stand up. And preferably move to a secure location. As far as I’m concerned his staff and security detail failed also by not lifting his monkey ass out of his seat and forcefully removing him.

Er, he was IN a ‘secure location’ at the moment. Nobody knew the extent of the attack at that time. Were there assassins set up outside? Was the motorcade a target? Who knew? If the Secret Service felt he was in immediate danger they would’ve grabbed him out of that classroom and taken him elsewhere. Until more info was collected, it’s totally reasonable for the president to remain right where he was.
Anyhoo, as for the copter crash, I don’t think the big issue is ‘Why do news stations cover these chases?’ Rather, I think it’s insane for the police to conduct these chases at all. Far more innocent people on the ground are put at risk during a high-speed police pursuit than by a couple of choppers in the air. Hell, I’d rather have a helicopter follow the suspect’s car until it stops and then radio that info to the cops. Stop these insane chases on residential streets!

Stephe, I think you’re grasping for excuses here. If “America is under attack”, it stands to reason that the leader of the country is conceivably a target no matter where he is. So erring on the side of caution and assuming the attack is probably co-ordinated (which it was) would have made more sense – therefore, he should have at least gotten the fuck up, and gone somewhere else. It didn’t really matter if they knew if the motorcade was a target, because eventually they did in fact leave that way, did they not? So it could have been hit one point or the other by that rationale, and would have least been a mobile target then as opposed to a stationary building full of children which he had probably been scheduled (although I’m not sure of this) to visit for some time. When you’re one of the most hated people in the world it’s safe to think you’re always in immediate danger, especially when “oceans no longer protect us” (as if that’s news). The secret service should have looked at the warnings at hand and removed him as an obvious precaution. They fucked up too. You think the power hungry Dark Sith Lord Cheney sat where he was when they first told him? Hell no, he shuttled himself off to that “small moon” like there was no tomorrow.

Regarding the Bush thing, I don’t particularly care if the location was secure or not. The key point is that a leader is supposed to *lead*. Bush should have stood his ass up, made his excuses, and then gone to at least pretend to take charge of the situation. Sitting there twiddling his thumbs until he was told to go by his staff just demonstrated that he ain’t the guy calling the shots. Like he showed again after Katrina, this guy simply does not know how to lead.
