Kubrick Collection coming
Warner Home Video will release a nine-disc “Director Series: Stanley Kubrick Collection” on 10.23.07. New two-disc special editions of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining as well as a “deluxe edition” of Full Metal Jacket (which would be…?). Also included: the doc called Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures. The whole kit ‘n’ kaboodle with set you back $79.92, but titles will also be sold individually for $26.99 a throw.
What makes these editions so new?
Although, I must confess my love for that Life in Pictures doc. Every time it’s on, I have to watch it. Might be worth it for that alone.

i met jan harlan (cool customer) and mrs kubrick (uber-distant) last year and saw some of the 2001 supplememntal stuff for the new disc.
saw mostly stargate concepts – lots of pulp SF imagery but a few pieces are mind-blowing.
one in particular has stuck with me – a perspective from the surface of a planet looking up at a bright blue sky that’s FOLDING BACK in the middle to reveal a night sky (inky black, twinkling stars) behind it.
folding back like a map or the lid of an open box, if that helps.
HOWEVER, the image quality for the video interviews is v. amatuerish – we’re talking handicam stuff in the living room.
I’m wondering if the Kubrick estate will finally allow the alternate ending to Dr. Strangeglove to be on dvd.

Thank you, TheJeff – that was my question. That’s why I’ve avoided buying most Kubrick DVDs. Damn full-screen.
Aspect ratio-wise, most of Kubrick’s movie’s are a nightmare. My understanding is that he shot the movies 1.33:1, knowing they would be cropped to 1.66:1 in Europe. In other words, his preferred frames are 1.33:1, but he also took 1.66:1 into account. Apparently, he could never get North American projectionists to accomodate 1.66:1 — except in cases where he targetted individual theatres — so his movies were usually cropped further in North America. I’m still curious to see the films in this ratio (though I’ve already seen a few like this in repertory theatres), but it’s nothing to get excited about. The HD DVDs, on the other hand…

Will it be the European version of Eyes or the censored version? I decided long ago that I wasn’t interested in watching Eyes until the unaltered movie was available in this country. (Not that it was ever a top priority for me.)

Cory3rd, I’m pretty sure it’s been widely confirmed that Clockwork and later will be 1.77, which seems a fair compromise ratio.
Is that number right? $26 for one and $79 for the whole set? Seems like it would be $179. But if it’s $79 that’s way too good a deal to pass up.
JD – your understanding is wrong. There is plenty of evidence to support that his intended aspect ratio was 1.85; whether he liked it or not, he did this because he knew that the American market was the main one his movies were being released in. However, he kept the 1.33 area safe (other than a helicopter blade in ‘The Shining’), because he preferred the films to be open-matte rather than pan-and-scan after the disasterous pan-and-scanning of ’2001′.
His preferred frames are absolutely not 1.33; this was his preferred frames for the television (and, eventually, video) release only, because he thought the black bars of letterboxing distracted viewers (actually, I’ve seen various reasons attributed to why he didn’t like letterboxing).
I’m only speaking of the movies included in this set; once you get into the floating aspect ratios of the transfers he prepared for “Strangelove” and “Lolita” (wish they’d release *that* someday), it gets more complicated. And the first couple are fullscreen, of course.
Phil – $80 for 5 movies plus a bonus disc isn’t really a “great deal”. It’s pretty standard, really.
I mean, the previous Kubrick box was under $100, and that was nine movies plus the bonus disc.
Also, weren’t they supposed to release the unrated ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ this year?
The Kubrick set will be released in both blu-ray and hd-dvd.

Sean, you’re mostly right. However, Kubrick actually did like 1.33 quite a bit. He started off as a still photographer and was happy with the negative aspect ratio.
What he didn’t like was width, he preferred height. He was preferential to his pictures screening in 1.66 because of this. But he was pragmatic enough to shoot full neg with a 1.85 ground glass to compose for US theatrical.
The new disks will split the difference at 16:9.

My feelings exactly. I’ve never seen Eyes Wide Shut. I hope they’re finally offering it.
That’s unfortunate. The theatrical experience versus video is quite different.
The picture was shot using the old Eastman 500EXR stock, which was much grainier than the T stocks at the time. Kubrick under-exposed the picture by 2 stops, then push-developed it by 2. The result was a splendidly grainy picture with particles dancing through the light streams — it was very intimate and immediately called viewers’ attention to the medium itself.
On video, the image was cleaned up. Grain doesn’t translate well in digital.
Sean, read Vincent Lobrutto’s Kubrick biography. There’s a whole section on the aspect ratio question and Kubrick is pretty clear that he depsises 1.85:1 and wanted his movies to be shown 1.66:1.

Whether Kubrick hated 1.85 or not, his last three movies were certainly shown in that aspect ratio at just about every screening in the U.S., and he certainly protected for it. I, personally, strongly prefer the 1.85 ratio for The Shining, and am indifferent about FMJ and EWS. I think that the 1.77 ratio that these three will be presented in is a fine compromise.
Note that the 1.77 ratio only affects the three films noted above. A Clockwork Orange will be 1.66 anamorphic and 2001 will be 2.20 anamorphic. I’m still not sure if the Lolita and Barry Lyndon re-issues will have new transfers or not. They should both be 1.66 anamorphic.

Leon Vitali said in an interview a few months back that Barry Lyndon wasn’t being remastered (although he didn’t say anything about Lolita). He also confirms Kubrick’s aversion to 1.85:1.
Another item of note is that this new artwork for CLOCKWORK ORANGE restores the Korova milk bar statue lady, which Kubrick had ordered removed from all tape and DVD covers around the mid-’80′s, for reasons I do not recall.
