Norton’s not a tribe member
Edward Norton participated in a Hulk dog-and-pony show in front of 6500 Comic-Conners yesterday along with costar Liv Tyler, Hulk director Louis Leterrier, and producers Avi Arad and Gale Anne Hurd. It had to have felt a little forced. Norton simply isn’t part of the tribe — doesn’t talk geek, look geek….the genes and the attendant belief systems simply weren’t passed along by his parents — and no amount of good-sport promo whoring can change that fact. well, seeing as he’s writing the incredible hulk, and is an unabashed marvel fan, he’s gotta have a little geek in him.
Jeff, since it’s a ‘tribe’ you show no understanding of nor interest in, how would you know whether or not Norton has what it takes to be a part of it?
It’s because Norton has a high thread count that Wells can’t picture him as being part of the tribe.
These things do happen.
I thought he seemed fairly geeky on the Fight Club DVD commentary track.
Avi Arad is no longer a “Marvel kingpin,” Jeff. He left Marvel more than a year ago to be an independent producer. He’s still attached to produce some Marvel projects that were in the works before he left, but he’s not on the payroll anymore.

How does that not make him a fan?
Norton rewrote “Frida,” also. And he was not a guy associated with Mexican art salons.
Perhaps as a callow youth, Edward Norton enjoyed a comic book or two. However, now he is a sophisticated, hip, Ivy League actor and with a goodly amount of insight and range.
Wells is correct. Norton at a geek fest is wildly incongruous and perfunctory in a mercenary way. That’s just business. Not a big deal.
Norton tries to rewrite every screenplay, no matter what it is or who is involved. His nonstop meddling and high opinion of himself is why a lot of folks don’t want to work with him.

What the hell happened to Ed Norton? He was supposed to be the next Dustin Hoffman. This is the LAMEST possible film to be a part of, a sequel to a flop. Norton seriously mismanaged his career in some crucial way to be doing movies like this now. It reeks of desperation. He should easily have Matt Damon’s career at least.

i’m more interested in robert downey jr showing up for IRON MAN. i have to say, that footage they showed — minus the cringe inducing “myspace” line — gave me geek chills.
i saw a photo of downey at a table of comicon young journalists and he was sitting with his chair turned around, which just makes him a cooler guy in my book.

Your blanket dismissal of certain genres and franchises led me to believe you don’t really want to know the comic/sci-fi/fantasy/horror crowd. Also, by your definition of geek, Norton is kind of an acting geek. I see a lot of geek potential in him and I could easily imagine him geeking out over comics.
Wow, yeah. I have to admit the Iron Man thing awoke my inner geek.
Plus, it’s not a sequel.
At one point during the Q&A, Norton looked over and saw that the next questioner was dressed like Captain America. “Look, it’s Steve Rogers!” he said, correctly identifying the civilian alter ego of that superhero.
You may be underestimating his geek quotient.

Ron Lim: Are you the comic book artist? If so, I really dug your work on Silver Surfer with Jim Starlin back in the late 80s/early 90s. If not, ignore my geekiness.
Wells: What does it mean to talk or look geek? Not every fan of comics/sci-fi/fantasy etc. looks like Harry Knowles or dresses like a Star Wars storm trooper for chrissakes.
Edward Norton hasn’t had a big hit in ages, THE ILLUSIONIST’s modest success being the closest to it. DOWN IN THE VALLEY never got off the ground and THE PAINTED VEIL completely flopped. His last huge film was THE ITALIAN JOB, in which he played the villian. Why exactly would they give him the lead in a franchise?
Regardless, he gets lifetime props for his work in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. I agree with the poster who said he should have Matt Damon’s career at least. I would love to see him in something like THE DEPARTED. But then I guess there’ll never be anything quite like that again. (All INFERNAL AFFAIRS fanatics please go sit on it.)

Sometimes getting outside the “geek mainstream” is the way to go. Star Trek was dead until Harve Bennett and Nick Meyer took it over on Wrath of Khan. Lucas should have gone outside his inner circle on the Star Wars prequels.
Of course, Ang Lee couldn’t really be considered geek royalty. But his take on the Hulk, as interesting as it was, was all wrong. The use of Norton may be easing the character back to where it needs to be.

Because comic book movies need indie-film validation in the form of attracting a quality actor who you wouldn’t expect to see in that kind of movie. Bizarre, but it’s how the world apparently works at the moment.
Norton was never supposed to be a box office actor. If I were him, I would be more concerned about not having had an Oscar nomination in nearly a decade.
