“Red Dawn” returns
Ruthless, ogre-ish, heavily-armed invaders descend from the sky, take over the reins of government, and before you know it rebel groups are forming into grass-roots militias, fighting back like proud guerillas and asserting their nativist rights — this is our country! Death to the invaders! Death before submission! Does this like, uhm.. remind anyone of anything?
This double-disc DVD of John Milius’ Red Dawn hit stores on 7.17. Do you think the MGM/UA Home Video guys had any ideas about present-day parallels, or were they just after some 20th anniversary bucks? I once asked Milius himself about the Iraqi rebellion angle — he didn’t bite, but he didn’t strenuously argue it either.
OK, it’s not ever going to have a Criterion edition or get saved in the national registry of films in a salt mine somewhere, but, having grown up in the 1980s, I have a big soft spot for Red Dawn. It’s still watchable, too. Just barely. Part as nostalgia and part as pure camp. WOLVERINES!!
Also, that’s a nice cover, but I would have made it a picture of C. Thomas Howell standing atop a high rock with a rocker launcher on his shoulder.

I thought these parallels were obvious and the reason that this movies been playing weekly on one of the Encore channels for almost two years now.

i love john milius but this was possibly the most frightening moviegoing experience of my 1980′s. a survivalist fantasy minus the kinetic fun. they even kill one of their friends as a traitor. tho it’s nice to see ron o’neal as the cuban with a heart of lead. 2 discs?

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Red Dawn, but I don’t recall the scene where the people of Colorado are dancing around, shouting “Thank You, Mr. Castro!” and pulling down statues of the founding fathers. Or the scene where the Wolverines are playing soccer with the Cuban troops. That must be in the special edition.
By the way, Jeff, this same territory was covered far more effectively, and explicitly, in the most recent season of Battlestar Galactica. But since that’s CGI, sci-fi geekboy stuff, I wouldn’t expect you to know that.

One of the classic high school comedies of the 80s! Funnier than the entire John Hughes oeuvre! Funnier than than the Brat Pack and the two Coreys put together! Dare we say it — funnier even than “Risky Business”! Even more daring — funnier than “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off”!

Funny, that’s not how it appeared in those 2007 dispatches from Michael Yon and Michael Totten that I read on Hollywood Elsewhere. But I’m sure a documentary couldn’t present a view skewed to one thesis!
I do not know if you are being ironic about the toppling of statues and playing soccer with Iraqis, but just to be on the safe side: Everyone knows the toppling of the Saddam statue was a staged event. All the wide shots reveal that there were very few people there, they were unable to topple the statue, an American tank ended up doing it and replacing it with an American flag, and before realizing that this was a bad PR move and replacing it with an Iraqi one. And playing soccer and such is nice, sure, but it can not beat having a living brother or sister with all their limbs intact. People who are still defending the invation of Iraq strike me as very stubborn.

Ahhhh…the first PG-13 movie. It deserves special mockery just for that.
Somebody back me up on this: I argued w/ someone the other day about PG-13, that the rating was created for Spielberg so he could show the beating heart in Temple of Doom, so that makes it sort-of the first PG-13. My accuser said but Red Dawn was the first movie to be released w/ the rating. I said yes, but.
Does my argument make sense? I couldn’t get through what I was trying to say. Probably because I was just saying “Yes, But” over and over and over.

If you want subtext, try watching Dune these days. It’s impossible to see Muad D’ib as anything other than a terrorist. It adds a layer of strangeness to an already strange film.

Yes, but — Yes, the outrage over the violence and intensity of “Temple of Doom” caused the ratings board to create the “PG-13″ which premiered with “Red Dawn”. That’s how I remember it anyway. I always liked the ratings addendum to “Jaws”, “…may be too intense for younger children”. Ha! Ya think?
And yet “Sixteen Candles”, “Vacation” and “The Breakfast Club” were rated R. (They really were)

16 CANDLES was appealed and released as PG in 1984.

Re Pelham on JAWS:
Universal tried out the “may be too intense” ad line on the G-rated THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN in 1971–which had a couple of shots of nonsexual nudity.
“Sixteen Candles” also got the (initial?) R because of that delightful, oh-so-80′s-comedy (and completely gratuitous) boob shot of Jake’s girlfriend in the gym shower….
Interesting about Andromeda Strain being G. That was back in the day when rating were far more literal. Hell, when I was a kid I saw a movie that was rated G and it gave me nightmares for years afterwards… scariest movie ever! (for a nine year old living in the midwest) “The Legend of Boggy Creek”! No tits, no bad words, rated G. This cheesy, micro-budget movie about a bigfoot-like creature terrorizing a small town in Arkansas scared the living shit out of me.

There was another bigfoot movie called The Creature from Black Lake that scared me. Plus there was a Black Lake on the way to the beach and after I’d been scared by the commercial like 20 times we drove past it…at night…..in the fog. I thought I was going to die.
I have The Creature from the Blake Lake on VHS….got it a few months ago…. haven’t watched it yet but saw it as a kid… I was obsessed with Bigfeet… got the DVD of Boggy Creek, too… awesome… that is, awesomely hilarious… though the 16mm DIY-ness of it does give it a spooky feel…
Never had the pleasure of seeing “The Legend of Boggy Creek”. But I was already an adult when “Red Dawn” came out, which is why I laughed through the whole thing. I still laugh thinking of Patrick Swayze, 32 years old and looking every day of it, pretending to be a high school quarterback.
Supposedly the Coen brothers drew on their friendship with John Milius as the inspiration for Walter Sobchak in “The Big Lebowski”.
“You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don’t wanna know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o’clock this afternoon … with nail polish.”
As ludicrous as “Red Dawn” is, I still remember it fondly. And I really like a lot of Milius’s other films, both the ludicrous (“The Wind and the Lion”, “Conan”) and the not so ludicrous (“Dillinger”, “Jeremiah Johnson”, “Judge Roy Bean”, “Apocalypse Now”, “Geronimo”).
The two televised movie previews that gave me the night terrors back in the late 70′s were for Attenborough’s MAGIC and Cohen’s IT’S ALIVE 2.
And Red Dawn is a terrible movie. When I was 12 I thought it was going to be some kind of horror movie, but it just bored me. Although Milius did right one good piece of dialogue (I’m paraphrasing):
“500 million Chinamen can’t be wrong.”
“Wait. I thought there was a billion chinese people?”
“There WERE a billion.”
That Powers Boothe. He used to make me chuckle.
The best Milius movie is the surf epic BIG WEDNESDAY.

I was pretty sure I found bigfoot tracks on the playground of my elementary school in 2nd grade. Completely wrong of course, but that’s the beauty of being in the 2nd grade: anything can happen.
Also, the commercial for Prophecy scared me. The one where the monster attacks and the dude hops off screen in his sleeping bag and he comes flying back against a big rock in a puff of down feathers.
And I think we’ve already had the conversation about the commercial for Beyond the Door.
