Women prosecuting women
Bidisha, a British author and art critic, is claiming in a Guardian piece that it’s the gossip publications and not the whacked-out celebs who are the true orchestrators of pain and meltdown and ruination. And not so much the publications as the women who work for them.
“The media that deal in pop freakouts don’t report these stories so much as create them,” she says. “If Britney Spears has had any kind of meltdown, who can blame her? She is followed wherever she goes by stalker-violators: some have cameras and call themselves paparazzi; some have notebooks and call themselves journalists; some have vaginas and call themselves concerned women of the world. All relish the harassment that they perpetrate.
“It is women (writers and readers) who are enjoying and encouraging the exposure of Lohan’s drink and drugs hell or Spears’s identity crisis, while saving space for a snide comment about their outfits. It is women who are getting off on other women’s difficulties, while men in power carouse, abuse (and self-abuse) with impunity.
“Who are the real ‘bad girls’? Not Lohan or Spears. The gossip magazines may be as punchy as a dose of Splenda, but they offer evidence that women have obediently taken on the values of a woman-hating world. We must recognise the part women play in the degradation of women: the ultimate betrayal.”
Blame the victimizers! That’s just so damn wrong. if these women wanted to be good girls they’d move out of LA and let the TMZ camera whores perish of hunger on the streets.
It’s ridiculous to carry the argument so far that these celebrities are no longer responsible for their own bad behavior, but is anyone else bothered by how we build these people up for no reason and then seem to get off on seeing them publicly torn back down?
And yet, amazingly, there are lots of pop-star-actress-starlet types that, while they do have paparazzi following them, manage to act like fairly responsible human beings. Think Mandy Moore. Think Hillary Duff. Heck, think Christina Aguilera. They’ve all been the subject of just as much scrutiny as Britney, et al., but have somehow managed to not act like complete human train wrecks. I never thought I’d say this, but even the not-particularly-intelligent Jessica Simpson comes across as responsible compared to the Paris Holtons of the world.

Who told Britney to go all Sinead o’Connor? Who told her to attack a papparazzi’s car with an umbrella? Who told her to go jump in the water a few days ago, wearing only her underwear and to do it with a gang of photogs in tow?
Who told Parasite Hilton to go get her fame by putting a video of her screwing some dude up on the internet?
And Lindsay Lohan…the girl’s insane. I can’t imagine ANY drug making somone do the stupid stuff she does. She doesn’t need to be making movies, she needs to be committed -for life!
These girls are their own worst enemies. Whitney Houston’s on drugs, has been for years (being married to Bobby Brown will do that to you) but you never see her getting arrested or crashing her car, or attacking photographers. Bidisha’s piece was written by someone who probably feels defensive that these are women behaving very badly. Fine if she feels only female celebs are being singled out. But to then minimize what they’ve done? Any of us would be in jail, if the cops found ANY amount of cocaine on us. So why is Lohan still free, and from what I hear taking hostages via a stolen SUV? These girls need to start teaking responsibility and Bidisha needs to stop running interference for them.
Oh, and slutbag that she is it’s only a matter of time until Christina Aguilera goes postal. Just you wait. It’ll happen.
I don’t think Jessica Simpson is as dumb as everybody believes. What we see from her is a scripted character playing to what her handlers believe is marketable. But I saw her one time on Jimmy Kimmel (not exactly Charlie Rose…), tuned in just to see how blank she was — and she just wasn’t. We were really surprised. She volleyed with Kimmel back and forth without missing a beat, and she had teeth. She was sharp and cynical and new exactly what was up. In fact, she was in control of the conversation.
I certainly don’t want to dismiss the importance of personal responsibility, which I believe in, but I guess that’s what I’m about to do here.
I think Bidisha is on to something, mostly because I don’t hear anyone else pointing at least half a finger at E! entertainment, OK magazine, talk radio, etc. for if not creating than at least CONTRIBUTING to the problem of young starlet types going off the rails.
I think what we’ve got here is certain individuals spinning out of control because of genetically inherited predispositions to certain substances (i.e. “addiction problems”) along with having to cope with an intense, never-ending media gaze. It’s one thing working IN COMBINATION with another, a perfect storm if you will.
while people want to scorn the tabloid media for turning these stars into dangerous idiots – look who controls the tabloid media – the studios. Entertainment Tonight is CBS Paramount. TMZ is Time Warner. The studios are making a quick buck off their own stars.
The paparazzi/celebrity media will not/should not ever get a pass for the incredibly bad contributions they make to our society in general.
At the same time, it’s irresponsible to state that they’re the sole cause for the idiocy that is Paris Hilton, Lindsay Hobag, Britney Snowball, or whoever. That’s ridiculous.

Jimmy Kimmel? He’s right up there with Donald Trump at being a misogynist. The way he was on a crusade to attack Rosie O’Donnell misrepresenting what she says trying to make her seem crazy. The only crazy thing she’s ever does is give tens of millions of dollars of her own money to causes like wounded soldiers from Iraq, victims of hurricane Katrina, foster children, disadvantage children, disabled children, etc. But let’s paint her wacked because she dares to question the authority and logic of the Bush administration. It is the men who elevate this misogynist attitude and promote women to power who stay with the party line.

I always felt personal responsibility for these baby girls was a little overrated. I’m glad a radical lesbian feminist can pitch and sell a story today, because sometimes you have to flip stuff on its head.
Last night the gossip hags on TV were yacking away about Linsey’s publicist who resigned and was conflicted because on the one hand, she didn’t want to seem like she was abandoning her and on the other, she didn’t want to seem like she was enabling her. I don’t believe in tough love or time outs. If I had a kid in showbiz today, I’d be terrified for them.
Sure, the “media” (if that’s what you want to call the paparazzi and cell-phone videographers)is partly to blame and so are the stars themselves. But why doesn’t anybody point the finger at the sycophants who surround these people and allow/validate/encourage this kind of behavior? I caught a glimpse of Lindsay Lohan running around in L.A. last November when she was still only 20, supposedly too young to buy alcohol. But she was flying high, club-hopping with a crew of older “friends” who were obviously purchasing libations for her (with her money, you can be sure) and — who knows? — maybe even pouring the stuff down her throat. It’s long been my suspicion that some of these so-called friends are double-agents who tip off their buddies at the tabloids and make sure every one of the star’s slip-ups gets plenty of attention. In the days of the studio system, these sorts of incidents probably happened just as frequently but the stars had people who were actually loyal to them and kept the debauchery out of the papers (at least out of the mainstream papers). Although I think Bidisha goes too far in laying the blame almost entirely on women, I will say that I’ve heard a newspaper consultant stress the importance of making sure that Paris, Lindsay, Britney and the like get prominent play in the People column because “readers like to feel superior to celebrities and it’s fun for them to read about the stars screwing up.” Actually, in the case of no-talents like Paris and Britney who will do anything (or anyone) to get their names in the paper, it’s just plain pathetic, and in the case of Lindsay, who actually has talent and is in the throes of self-destruction, it’s pretty damn depressing. Anyone who’s enjoying these stories and craving second helpings must have a few issues of his or her own that ought to be addressed.
