The Envelope‘s Paul Sheehan has put up a big generous piece showcasing 36 or 37 potential Best Actor nominees, with a separate click-through page and a really nice photo showcasing each would-be nominee. The only weird part is that this isn’t May or June or July — it’s late September and the field has been narrowed down to eight or nine guys, at most, and none of them are Anthony Hopkins in Slipstream! Please!
Due respect to the Envelope-rs, but they need to get with the program. The final quarter is up and rolling, and the finalists are Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Denzel Washington (American Gangster), Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley of Elah), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead), James McAvoy (Atonement), Sam Riley (Control), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), and I’m being generous with two or three of these.
What’s the Envelope’s next move? Running a big piece about the 37 potential Best Actress nominees? It’s fine to run these big-blowjob, give-everyone-a-pat-on-the- back-whether-they-deserve-it-or-not articles if you’re the editor of a Hollywood Reporter special tribute edition and you’re looking to wangle as much advertising as possible, but this is Handicap Season — a time to start thinning out of the herd, not add to it.
Come on, Jeff. I agree with some of these picks, but they’re YOUR picks, not the consensus. As much as I liked Control, I don’t sense any widespread best actor heat quite yet. And why are you already pushing performances nobody has seen? It just proves that this whole Oscar game is a bunch of self-fulfilling nonsense.
I’d say you’re jumping the gun. Obviously there is no Oscar hope for many of these jokers, but two of the known quantities from that list still have some chance and will receive strong pushes (i.e. Almaric, Affleck [I'd say for Gone Baby Gone, although plenty enjoy him in Jesse James]).
In the “unseen and too early to count out” pile, del Toro, Bardem, Nicholson all seem like they still deserve some consideration.
And what the hell is the status on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s other film, Synecdoche, New York?
I don’t see how anyone can watch the new trailer for “The Bucket List” and not consider Nicholson a strong possibility at this point. He’s certainly more feasible than an obscure pet-favorite selection like Sam Riley.
That trailer contains every ingredient that has worked for Jack in the past, plus one more – he’s fucking dying! The Academy will probably be eating this one up with a spoon and then coming back for seconds.
Well, I knew “Leatherheads” was a football movie but I didn’t know it revolved around Clooney competing for Zellweger’s affections with a hotshot half his age. Can you say “Bull Durham”?
Yeah, the list is pretty funny in its attempt to include anybody and everybody. Basically, if you’ve EVER been nominated before, and you have a movie coming out between now & December, and it’s in English, you’ve got a good shot of making the list. Jamie Foxx in ‘The Kingdom’? Really? Really??!! I hear 38-40 was supposed to be the three kids from ‘Superbad’…..sheesh.
Hey 115, there’s nothing wrong with the kids from Superbad! Christopher Mintz Plasse deserves a shot at a supporting nomination, or at least a Globe nom for best actor in a comedy. He was genuinely terrific and I dare say much more worthy of that Globe spot than 2 or 3 of the guys that will get one.
Definitely not hating on the kids from ‘Superbad’ – I thought they were all great. I was just pointing out that one of them has as good a shot of making the final 5 for “Best Actor” as some of the 37 names mentioned in the article. And I might have to single out Michael Cera as the best – least flashy role, but he was hilarious (“Yeah….they told us in Health…that that would happen….”)….man, that was the best.
Nobody thinks Bale has a darkhorse shot for Rescue Dawn? This guy is one of the best actors around and he’s hit the ball out of the park so consistently that it would truly be ashame if he didn’t.
