“Smiely Face” gets the shaft
MTV’s Larry Carroll reported this morning that Gregg Araki‘s Smiley Face, which got a rousing reception at Sundance last January, has gotten the shaft from its distributor, First Look. The comedy will open in one lousy theatre in Los Angeles later this year and then go straight to DVD in January. Carroll is calling Smiley Face “one of the funniest films we’ve seen in 2007…it deserves better.” Tough break, tough town.

This is ridiculous. Why buy a movie if you don’t have the balls to release it? What really bugs me is that this one particular genre — the stoner comedy — is never taken seriously theatrically, but film-after-film (Half Baked, Harold and Kummar, etc.) becomes a big smash on video. And Smiley Face is significantly better than those movies.

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a long time, since back when it was called Mary Reilly and was set to star Winona Ryder. What a shame. Doesn’t First Look know what it has on its hands? Stoner comedies are always a hit with auds. Get it? A “hit?” Hahaha…
Strange. They had posters and everything touting a 4/20 release and so I thought it was dumped into a theater or two and never heard from again like a lot of indie films.
First Look is doing the same thing with An American Crime, starring Catherine Keener. That movie didn’t get as strong a response at Sundance, I’ve heard, but no Catherine Keener movie deserves to go straight to DVD.
First Look is a very different company today than they were when they made SMILEY FACE. Too bad, ’cause it’s a really good film and deserves a proper release. At the very least, another distributor (searchlight? atomic?) should step in and take it off FL’s hands.

Saw this flamajama at SXSW. Was quite enjoyable and deserves better than this. Faris was amazing in what could have easily been a one-joke role.

MYSTERIOUS SKIN is the only Araki movie that I completely liked, mostly because of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s preformance. As far as Anna Faris is concerned, I think she’s a sexy and talented comedic actress who has been in many a lousy movie; it’ll be great to see her in a good movie someday.

I also heard that David Fincher is pissed that Disturbia did better than Zodiac.
I think we’re all pissed about that.
Mysterious Skin is probably my least favorite Araki film, but I’ll concede that it is technically his best film.
There was just too much creepy graphic child molesting in the movie, and I couldn’t get over that. The direction was terrific and JGL was incredible, but there is only so much underage sex with old dudes I can take in one movie. I absolutely loved Nowhere and Splendor, though.
