O’Hehir talks to Mungiu
Salon’s Andrew O’Hehir (whose last name I’ve never learned how to pronounce…do you say it like Chicago’s O’Hare airport?) has an indie-film column on Salon.com called “Beyond the Multiplex”, and today he has an interview with 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days director Cristian Mungiu, along with an mp3 interview that won’t load.
I like to pronounce it the way it looks in my head: oh, heh here!
I saw 4 Months… last night. It’s a brilliantly executed film and yet I can’t say it was a lot of fun to watch…I remember Jeff’s review of Diving Bell, when he said it made him sort of miserable in a way despite it’s brilliance…Diving Bell is Singin’ in the Rain compared to 4 Months…it’s a dour, ugly, depressing, documentary-like film about a girl getting an illegal abortion. I found myself quite impressed with the filmmaking while simultaneously asking myself, Why the fuck did I rent this again?
I can’t speak for how Andrew O’Hehir pronounces it himself, but it’s obviously an Irish name and in Ireland it would indeed be pronounced like O’Hare airport – O’Hare would have been the same name originally.
I think it’s pronounced “huhfahhrrrr.”
