“Somewhere in Barcelona”

Variety critic Robert Koehler and I were having a beer at Joe’s Cafe this evening when a Barcelona-based journalist friend and a significant other dropped by to say hello. I asked the guy if he knew what the Spanish- language title of Woody Allen‘s latest film is. (The English-language title is one of the all-time worst from a significant American filmmaker — Vicky Cristina Barcelona.) His girlfriend/wife said it was Somewhere in Barcelona, or, roughly translated, En algun lugar de Barcelona.

    OMG!

  2. The title of this film refers to the names of the characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall, Christina and Vicky respectively, plus the name of the city, Barcelona.
I don’t think it’s that bizarre. It’s better than Me, Myself & Irene, or Me, You, Them or You, Me and Dupree or Me and You and Everyone We Know.
It’s just Vicky (Rebecca Hall), Christina (Scarlett Johansson) and Barcelona.

  3. Me & You & Everyone We Know is a good title because it has a slightly pretentious, self-conscious quality that fits the film perfectly. I’ve always liked it, but then, it’s also one of my favorite movies of the last few years.
All those other titles are pretty dumb, though. Including the Allen title, which just sounds dorky.

  4. Competing titles by “significant American film makers”:
Altman’s “Dr. T and the Women” (Now “Mr. T and the Women” might have worked)
Coen’s “The Hudsucker Proxy” (I love the film, but from a marketing standpoint the title, well…)

  5. Padaratz, you’re wrong. Jeff’s discovery is indeed correct (although, I thought this was common knowledge all along). There is a region of Barcelona with the name Vicky Cristina. This makes me already hate the fact that there are coincidentally characters of the same name. Nauseating…

  6. Found your site on Drudge. Interesting to read about Jack Matthews, Robert Koehler and yourself.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with each of you. Best to Jack Matthews..
