Minor Cannes Advantage

The only tactical advantage to seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in Cannes on 5.18 is that critics there will have a jump on those seeing it stateside by perhaps as little as seven or eight hours.

The Cannes press screening will happen at 8:30 am with reviews going up an hour or so after it ends at 10:35 am — make that 11:30 am to 12 noon, Cote d’Azur time. That’s 6:30 am to 7 am New York time, and 3:30 am to 4 am L.A. time. If U.S. domestic screenings happen in the evening, the word from Cannes will be exclusive for two-thirds of a day, give or take. Obviously less so if they happen in the afternoon. I’m hearing that U.S. screenings may begin around noon or 1 pm in the east.

  1. word is that there will be five screenings throughout the day of the 18th (here in l.a.) to accomodate everybodys schedule….still no word on location (s)…….
if this is true, i’m guessing it will prob be the same in nyc…..

  2. The only tactical advantage of seeing Jones in Cannes is that you see it a few hours before the critics in LA? How about the fact that being in Cannes you are NOT in LA. How about that for a tacitcal advantage?

  3. Seeing Indy IV a couple of hours early is at least some justification for dumping all that carbon into the atmosphere while flying to France.

  4. Pope: I doubt people will be lining up in costumes and sleeping in cots for Indy the way they did for the Star Wars prequels.

  5. DZ, if I knew I wouldn’t be the only one, I would totally dress up like Mola Ramm and try to rip people’s hearts out of their chests.

  6. cj, I think Wells is hoping it’ll actually be enjoyable. if i recall correctly, he said the trailer looked promising…of course it’s great that this is a society where you continually shit on another’s art and can still get invited back for another look.

  7. Aladdin, you’re correct of course, though I remain skeptical. His turn around followed months of “Uncle Festus” cracks and bitching about aliens. Then there was the whole 140 minute thing which was certainly laying the groundwork for a takedown even if he was unwilling to come right out and say it at the time.
If he likes it and says so, I’ll be happy to admit I’m wrong once again.
