Misinformed
I was confused by two Amazon.com statistics regarding Fox Home Video’s 5.13 DVD release of Raoul Walsh‘s The Big Trail (1930). This staid, somewhat cornball John Wayne wagon-train western is immensely watchable due to its being the first Hollywood film to be shot and released in a 70mm widescreen format (which was called “Fox Grandeur”). The problem is that Amazon says the aspect ration is 1.85 when the true aspect ratio is 2.1 to 1. And the running time is given as 212 minutes despite the actual length (according to packaging) being 122 minutes.
Take no notice of the IMDB listing stating that the film’s varying running times are 125 min (35 mm version) and 158 min (70 mm version). Mordaunt Hall‘s N.Y. Times review (which ran on 10.25.30) mentions a Fox Movietone Newsreel as well as an “atmospheric prelude” to the feature. There’s your additional 26 minutes.
Nice to know that even Wells double-posts sometimes.
Of course, this won’t make sense once he takes down the redundant entry. But we knows, precious..yes, we knows!
It is kind of cool to see that kind of big-canvas/long-take framing in an old movie instead of cutting to medium close-ups all the time. It’s like Altman shot an early talkie.
The longer running times were probably initial engagements in the big cities, then it was cut down for general release and they probably cut the negative, as they often did back in those days, so 122 minutes is all that’s left (and frankly it’s enough– don’t expect Stagecoach, but it’s interesting).
Sorry, should say possibly, not probably. Jeff’s explanation (that the NYT mistook the total program running time for the one feature) is also entirely possible.
The 212 minutes, which Fox put out in its publicity announcement, appears to be a mistaken addition of the running times of the two versions that are in the package, the letterboxed version which runs 122 minutes (with Exit Music) and the Academy aspect ratio (full screen) version, which runs 108 minutes.
Each version is different, by the way, as they shot the film with two different cameras.
212 could also be a simple typo, transposing the numerals from 122.
