Of Time and the City
The two new Jolie-Pitt kids -- a boy, Knox Leon, weighing 5.03 pounds, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, weighing 5 pounds even -- began their journey last night (i.e., Saturday) at Lenval Hospital (57, avenue de la Californie, northeast of the airport) in Nice. Obstetrician Michael Sussman delivered the twins. Brad and Angie now have six kids -- the adopted Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, and Zahara, 3, plus the au natural Shiloh, 2, and the twins.

My interest is in Chateau Miraval, the $70 million dollar, 35-room estate near Aix en Provence which they're reportedly intending to lease for three years. Who needs 35 rooms? Little kids always share bedrooms, Brad and Angie will share a room with the twins plus..what, a nanny and a couple of assistants? They could all probably make do with a ten-room mansion. Fifteen might be a wee bit extravagant. Twenty would be, like...whoa, take it easy. But thirty-five friggin' rooms?
This isn't my business but everyone is in everyone else's face these days so why not? I'm talking about passing along decent values to your kids. I realize that Chateau Miraval is a working wine vineyard so you need facilities for the guys who work it, but it's not a good thing to instruct your children through day-to-day experience that nouveau riche extravagance is the norm. Even if you pass along the best kind of emotional and spiritual upbringing by your words and deeds, an opulent lifestyle will always create a sense of swagger and entitlement and a nonstop litany of lusts and appetites.
The best thing you can do is give your kids to a natural, non-flamboyant, modestly-scaled life. They should have love and comfort and occasional perks, but mainly within the framework of a life based upon need and nutrition and not whimsical indulgence. Brad and Angie's kids' life should not be about what they'd like to taste or fuck around with or splash around in on a daily whim because their parents are loaded and "why not?" The Jolie-Pits are doing their kids no favors by bringing them up this way. 99% of the world lives in a world of limits and natural proportion.

They're in a wildly different circumstance than 99.999999% of the world, though. I bet the importance of 35 rooms paled in importance to the security and privacy such a large estate could provide. And trust me, their security detail is likely larger than anybody but the President's. Sadly, too, that's probably justified with the paparazzi and everyday crazies who track their every move.
So you've got Pitt and Jolie, the kids (who don't always share bedrooms), the assistants, the security, the nannies, the chef(s), the vineyard workers (likely kept in a completely separate wing), rooms for guests - add all of this up, and the 35 rooms start looking less and less vacant.

Really good points, Josh. And maybe some of those rooms will be classrooms since some of the kids...all but the twins, really, are at the age where learning occurs. Maybe they won't buy the place, too, but none of us...NONE of us knows what it must be like to be them, not to mention their kids, with the thousands offered for just one shot. 99% of the world doesn't have photographers lurking and aiming. I would also hope that some of Pitt's, and to a certain extent Jolie's modest beginnings would be remembered as they now raise children. So far, they seem to be doing okay.

I find them to be disgusting. I'm already done with Angelina Jolie, after the abomination called "Wanted" (Does she needs the money that much that she made a movie glorifying weapon? Isn't she the UN ambassador to Africa or something? Wasn't she AGAINST land mines? Fucking hypocrite). They're as ugly as they're pretty.

the fact that Brad is trying to rebuild New Orleans while Angelina wants us to make sacrifices for the sake of those less fortunate makes them being residents of a French chateau with all these rooms makes them as annoying as Brad's hat.

Damn, you all must be bored on a Sunday. It's pretty simple folks. It's their money and they can spend it any way they like. Caring for others via donating time and money does not require one to live in poverty. I never hear anyone berating George Clooney for flying to the Sudan with a news crew and then immediately turning around and returning to his villa, his boats, his cars, and his bought women.

I think it's funny how everyone wants to have (and has) a saying on Jolie and Pitt's life. I don't see that with other actors.
It's their money, they should be able to use it how they feel like it. Oher actors have mansions, yachts, islands... and i don't see no one using them as an example and saying that "99% of the world lives in a world of limits and natural proportion."
For years Jolie gives a third of her income to charity. I just read a couple of days ago that just in 2006 the Jolie-Pitt foundation gave 8 million dolars to several organizations.
I also read that they have a house in the jungle of Camboja where they don't even have a bathroom and they stay there sometimes.
So i think it's save to say that they are setting a good example for their kids and the kids can see and live in both worlds.

It's has nothing to do with her role has UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Her role as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador is to bring awareness to the refugees issues. She has been doing for the last 7 years.
And for the last 7 years she also has been giving a third of her income to several humanitarian orgnizations.

I guess the people that spend their time berating these two believe their own shit don't stink.
If your life was under a microscope, how good would you look? If you had tens of millions of dollars, and spent a lot of time and effort trying to help those less fortunate, would you live in a trailer park, or would you want to live in nice places?
It's real simple. None of us would hold up under all that scrutiny, none of us would look perfect all the time. None of us could please all the people, all the time.

Where are you getting your info from? Angelina makes $10-15 million per film; Brad somewhere in the $15-17 million range. Plus he owns Plan B. Neither Pitt nor Jolie are hard up for cash. We all should be so lucky. Jolie has been donating money before she had babies and I'm betting this will continue even after the last baby leaves the nest. Also they did NOT sell their NO home that was gossip garbage. http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2008/06/contrary_to_rumor_jolie_and_pi.html

Funky: Excuse-me! But it does look like that's all they're doing is having babies to get the $$Millions....at least Halle Berry had the good taste not to put her baby on the cover of a mag cover....and I'm not sure about those $$mil that they're getting per picture. He hasn't had a hit since -- well, since when was the last time? I think they're probably getting back-end $$ and low end upfront wages. It always looks good to say someone is getting $10mil a picture, but if we believe what Nicole Kidman stated, she gets her money on the back end.
In any event, the baby making is bringing in more money than almost anything else they're doing....correction -- they also have endorsement deals.
Call me cynic.

4 out of his last 6 films have grossed over $100 million domestically and the other two were critical successes (Babel, Assassination of Jesse James...) so I think his recent track record is actually pretty good.

Redbull: I imagine the house is being paid for with whatever's left of Brad's alimony.
Chicago: Pitt probably made money on Ocean's 13, but that may not count, since that was a sequel. Otherwise, he pretty much lost his marketability after he ditched Jen. First Jesse James, now Benjamin Button. His career's going down for the opposite reason of Tom Cruise, which is that he's trying to pretend he's not an egotistical a-hole.

Chicago48, you've probably been called a hellava lot worse than a cynic. Your rant does not take away from the fact that both Pitt and Jolie are individually wealthy and with their combined wealth could both stop working tomorrow, keep donating and still live the life you could only dream of. It does not take away the fact that before the tabloid obsession with celebrity children both Pitt and Jolie, respectively, were involved with worthwhile causes and each was very generous with his/her money.
As cinefan already pointed out Pitt's box office record speaks for itself and I would rather watch Pitt continue to star in and produce films such as Jesse James, Babel, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, God Grew Tired of Us, and A Mighty Heart and never again have a box office hit. The older he gets the better film choices he makes.
So no I won't excuse you because in my opinion your only blowing hot air to try to cover up the fact that you're being called out for your ignorance and it burns your butt.

I have a friend who worked at Plan B. and as someone who has worked at a talent driven production company, I'm telling you, bosses like Brad are rare. It's a great place to work, the employees are actually paid well and he is involved in the day to day of the company.
