I’ve been wondering why the press seems to be handling Governor Palin with kid gloves. There are numerous issues that deserve further investigation, but the MSM seems to be afraid (or unwilling) to do some good, honest investigative reporting. They NEVER would have given Hillary a pass on something like this (they certainly never gave Bill a pass).

As I blogged at my own site, the problem with this is that even if it turns out to be true, all it shows is a mother lying to protect her daughter. And what mother wouldn’t?
I want to defeat the Reps as badly as anyone, but I’m not sure this is the way.

LYT, I think that if she lied in this major way it’s a career ender, no matter if some people think it was noble. It’s 2008, not a 1950s Douglas Sirk movie.
I don’t think it’s real, though. I DO think she flew at a dangerous time in her pregnancy and then took her time getting to a hospital in an attempt to force a miscarriage, however. Or I suspect that’s the case, and there’s no way to prove that.

  • Gaydos

Toss TIm Robbins’ “Bob Roberts” and Elia Kazan’s “Face in the Crowd” into a blender with Jerry Springer and Jesse Ventura with a dash of Ralph Reed and two seasons of “Ice Road Truckers” and you get Gov. Palin, McCain’s calculated gamble to triangulate and strangulate this election into another “nattering nabobs” culture war.
Two problems: a) don’t think it will work and b) it says, “Screw America’s security and stability, I got an election to win.” I’m not sure even trailer trash can’t see through/into that trope.
Or as Kinky Friedman would say, “I think even Jesus hates a loser.”

  • broadstreetbully

I’m sincerely worried that Palin’s nomination does indeed spell possible doom for the Obama/Biden ticket.
“Nattering nabobs” always win in American elections. The more left-wing East Coast city-dwellers make fun of Palin, the stronger she’ll become among Independents in the Midwest and West. I think a reading of “Applebee’s America” should be mandatory for left-wing pundits in this day and age; Obama deserves so much better than this.
If I were in the Obama campaign, I’d force left-wing media to focus their attention on McCain and ONLY McCain PRONTO. This is EXACTLY the reason the Republican Party picked Palin; because they knew she’d distract the left into fighting culture wars, which always play into conservative hands, and keep the issues of foreign policy and economics off the table, which is where Obama would rightfully run away with this thing. Making fun of a rural, patriotic woman (as brainless and silly as she may be) will only aid the Repub ticket.
    Focus on McCain.

  • Josh

I really wonder if the Left and the MSM would slander a male candidate like that.
    Ouch.

  • cleopatrajones

There’s a person who goes by the sn “Sue Williams” who claims to run in the same circles as Palin. According to her, Trig is Sarah Palin’s son but her daughter Bristol IS pregnant and was forced to marry her teenaged boyfriend. I have included part of her comments. To read the rest go to the link and look for “Sue Williams”
“During this period is when Bristol, Sarah‚Äôs sixteen year old daughter, turns up pregnant. So, it‚Äôs kind of interesting to note that the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee and her sixteen year old junior in high school unwed daughter were carrying babies at the same time. Once Bristol‚Äôs condition became more obvious this summer, she was whisked out of sight and hasn‚Äôt been seen in public until yesterday in Ohio. This is why Trig‚Äôs blanket was strung across her entire abdomen and torso, but, when she walked down the stairs from the stage, in a profile shot, it was very clear to see she is well into her third trimester of her pregnancy.
It has come out in the past couple of days that she and her high school boyfriend had a quickie wedding and that she is home schooling her senior year.
The Anchorage Daily News has known about this for months – and haven‚Äôt touched the story. But I can‚Äôt imagine the national press or the Democratic Party will be as willing to turn a blind eye.”

    Plausible?

  • D.Z.

broadstreet: Independents tend to pick candidates who have some sort of populist appeal, and who come off focusing on the issues relevant to them. So I’m not sure if Palin fits those categories.

    Andrew Sullivan is an idiot.
As for others, if the daughter is secretly married, where is the marriage certificate? And what would the daughter’s marriage have to do with Sarah’s baby anyway? Produce it, or STFU.

Let me get this straight Miss Family Values Alaska who doesn’t believe in birth control, abortion under any cicumstances (rape & incest too), and whose 17 year old daughter is having a shot gun wedding and we’re supposed to drop it?!!?! Look, families get in trouble and issues arise but when you put yourself out there as the queen of family values you don’t get a free pass. I wonder what the right wing would say if one of Obama’s girls were pregnant or found to be sexually active? HMMM…..

  • arturobandini2

As I warned yesterday, Babygate has been a smokescreen right out of the Karl Rove playbook. Here you’ve got a candidate who’s woefully incompetent for the job, and who’s surrounded by minor but potentially harmful scandals (Troopergate, Bridgegate). So what do you do if you’re Rove (or one of his acolytes?)
You create another scandal, essentially false, based on salacious hearsay. Let it percolate long enough to create widespread gossip, then BOOM! — whip out the evidence that debunks the rumor. Not only does it defuse the other (legitimate) scandalsl, but it lets the candidate off the hook by creating sympathy. And it discredits her political enemies by revealing them to be craven hypocrites. Just think: Now the cons can say to all those PUMAs who were offended by McCain’s selection: “Look how your party treats women on *both* sides of the party line.”
Folks, we gotta get smarter about counter-strategy if we’re to help the Dems. Personally, I think Obama’s smart enough — and McCain is senile enough — to prevail on his own merits. But WE can still screw it up for him if we allow ourselves to get played like this. Watch Obama, follow his example, and learn from his keen intelligence. And if the country still somehow decides that Scarecrow and Mrs. King are better fit to lead, then we deserve to implode.

  • JHRussell

    sumo-pop:
Shut the fuck up. It is a private matter now.
On second thought – yeah, keep it up, dude. This is EXACTLY what Obama wants you to do.
    Idiot.

  • arturobandini2

JHRussell, don’t you agree that Monicagate was also a private matter?

  • JHRussell

“JHRussell, don’t you agree that Monicagate was also a private matter?”
    Not really….
President has sex in the White House with an intern…not quite a private matter comparable to a 17 year old girl getting pregnant, but the GOP really screwed up by pursuing impeachment – it did not rise to that level of indictment…
However, Clinton perjured himself before a federal grand jury, and THAT was justification for impeachment, but politically, the GOP still should have dropped it…

  • arturobandini2

JH, I applaud your appreciation for nuance. I agree with a lot of what you just said, but sumo-pop has a legitimate point, too. If Repubs insist on trumpeting “family values” as a key platform, then an unwed teen pregnancy in the White House raises the specter of hypocrisy.

  • sumo-pop

Very eloquent JHRussell. Solid job conjugating your verbs and all.

  • JHRussell

The only hypocrisy when a teen gets pregnant would have been for her to have an abortion – then you might have a point.
Second – the reports are that she is getting married, so the “unwed” part of your charge is also irrelevant. But even if she did not get married, where is the hypocrisy in a “pro-life” family? The only hypocrisy I can see would be for her to have an abortion.
Jeff is trying to alert you guys to drop it. For once, listen to Jeff – this is a loser for libs to attack this young woman and her family for their handling of a private matter. The conspiracy over Palin’s baby was disgraceful – you guys have basically been given a way out of this mess, but if you really think there is political hay to be harvested from this, please proceed…

  • SpinDozer

‘As I warned yesterday, Babygate has been a smokescreen right out of the Karl Rove playbook.’
    Excellent post Arturo!

  • sumo-pop

    JHRussell defining loser. Thanks.

  • arturobandini2

JH: She’s pregnant. She’s not married yet. It’s an UNWED PREGNANCY. Please don’t get all Bill Clinton on me after I just complimented you. And well you know it’s hypocritical, after the GOP has been preaching teen abstinence for the last 30 years.

  • JHRussell

sumo-pop et al, if you think it is a “winner” of an argument, I hope that you keep on bloggin’ about it…

  • JHRussell

    arturobandini2:
What it is is a tragic mistake for a young woman to make, but at least she has made a principled decision to keep the baby, and to “legitimize” the baby via marriage, and she has the support of her family.
Those are the kind of “family values” that matter to everyone of all political leanings, and if you guys really want to keep this up, you might want to get your talking points from Obama HQ before proceeding blindly…

  • sumo-pop

Abstinence only is a political issue. It doesn’t work and this is proof. Keepin’ it simple stupid for JHRussell.

  • sumo-pop

The baby needs to be legitimized?

  • arturobandini2

JH, who’s attacking the Palins at this point? I’m questioning your logic.
But since you persist dwelling on this topic, you do raise an interesting point. Why would the mother of a pregnant, unwed teen agree to campaign for Vice President, knowing full well the international press attention that will be surrounding her daughter? It’s quite obvious that Sarah puts her own political ambition above her childrens’ need for privacy.

  • Richardson

“The only hypocrisy when a teen gets pregnant would have been for her to have an abortion – then you might have a point.”
The hypocrisy stems from their claim that abstinence-only education works to prevent teenage pregnancy. The counter-argument is that is has been proven that, since kids will have sex anyway, not teaching them about contraception leads to an increase in pregnancies.
Now, among the extreme right-wing, there is no problem there. But the average soccer-mom, the ones who might vote for her even though she has extremely strong views on abortion, don’t want to think about their own 16 year old daughters getting pregnant.
This will help shore up the base, I agree, but it’s going to cost her a lot of moderate support. (Or would, if she were going to stay on the ticket — I give it less than two weeks before she drops out for “family reasons”.)

  • BurmaShave

Hey let’s take Devin’s horrifyingly crass new idea and run with it.

  • Rev. Slappy

I was a high school teacher for 10 years and it was always weird to see adults encouraging teenagers to date and be engaged in very serious romantic relationships — but not have sex. In school we put enormous social pressure on kids to be dating (even kids who are in junior high school encouraged to have dates for school dances and such) but were then shocked when girls would turn up pregnant. As a kid growing up going to church I saw the same thing: social pressure for kids to date and then a bizarre expectation for them to remain chaste. It’s like giving a souped-up sports car to a16 year old who just got his drivers license and expecting him not to drive fast. These people are idiots.

  • corey3rd

Nothing says, “I’m a responsible mother” more than having a teenage daughter that’s knocked up by her teenage boyfriend. Palin has at least proven that giving absencence-only birth control advice can’t even help the new figurehead of the party.
John McCain does need to quit staring at Palin’s rack at public events.
And why wasn’t McCain wearing his American flag pin when he introduced her? He didn’t even wear a flag pin when he announced they weren’t having any real GOP functions at the convention tonight. Where is his flag pin? Did he leave that on Leno’s sofa?
