We Cool

The shutdown phase is over because the talkback function has been fixed. Anyone can now log in and fire away. If and when the trolls appear, they will be smitten in short order. Fair warning.

  1. Am I troll if I write that was an awful speech?
I’ll give him credit– he *can* give a great speech, even when he says things I disagree with (which is about 95% of the time).
But even by those charitable standards, what a lousy speech. The first half was all attack– and not in a classy, subtle, “draw distinctions” sort of way. The second half was all over the map liberal cookie-jar promises, most of it things the government *can’t* do (let alone *should* do), the rest of it so expensive it’ll make the last eight years a model of fiscal discipline.
Very, very disappointing. Good for Democrats who hate George W. Bush (who, again, is NOT running for reelection this year)– not good for independents who wanted something new.

  2. “Bad speech? Are you cracked?”
I don’t think that I am. What I do think is that a speech that mentioned John McCain 20 times is a little obsessive. (for comparison: George W. Bush mentioned Al Gore once in 2000, and George H.W. Bush didn’t mention Dukakis at all in 1988).
It was a very mean speech, and it spoke about an America that doesn’t exist. Whatever problems we have, they’re not unique– it’s the usual cyclical “bad patch” this nation has every ten years or so. And even than, it’s so bad that the *economy keeps growing* (depression? It’s not even a recession!).
Barack Obama may have once been a candidate of hope and change, but tonight, all I heard for nearly an hour was doom and gloom and fear-mongering of big, bad evil John McCain (you know, the same guy that John Kerry wanted as his running mate in 2004, and Joe Biden is friends with. . . THAT terrible, evil man).
Lousy speech. I’ll stand by it, and give it a few days to sink in– I expect louder voices than mine will agree.
    Nice fancy show, however.

  3. People see what they want to see. He attacked my guy so I have to discount his speech.
And before you say it, Obama is not my guy, but I enjoyed his speech. It wasn’t same old same old.
    See you in St Paul.

  4. “for comparison: George W. Bush mentioned Al Gore once in 2000″
Yeah, but how many times did he refer/allude to Clinton (who, again, was NOT running for re-election that year)?
