Nice Dream

It wouldn’t have worked with undecided voters, but frustrated Barack Obama supporters like myself would have felt immensely satisfied if he’d shown a little steel last night and told John McCain to wipe that smirk off his face because… you know, there was nothing the least bit funny or amusing about what they were discussing.

I’m thinking, of course, of that delicious moment in Michael Mann‘s The Insider when Bruce McGill tells Wings Hauser to do just that in that Mississippi courtroom.

  1. it’s a moment in cinema that is not eclipsed even by the same actor thumb flicking the William Tell Overture on his cheeks in Animal House

  2. I didn’t think he was smirking. I thought he was wincing. As in, that guy has got his shit together, and I have no idea what I’m talking about.

  3. As somebody inclined to vote for Obama, I wasn’t very happy about the steel deficiency he was evincing in a lot of that debate. For someone whose campaign has goosed the passions of so many voters to such a degree, he came off kind of bloodless to me throughout.

  4. There was NO WAY he could have done that…you know how careful he has to be to not be labeled the “Angry Black Man”. The white power structure likes an angry white man…it comforts them…makes them feel safe…
But even a small hint of unrestrained power from a man whose only difference is that his skin color is different?
    Never get away with it.
I know what you want him to do and I know how satisfying it would be to knock these unrestrainedly corrupt and out of control Republicans down a few pegs.
Obama is walking the razor with the restraint and calming tactic he needs. We won’t see the attack dog we want from him, which is why they need to start using Biden quite a bit more, in my humble opinion.
You were right, though, Mr. Wells, and I think Biden should come out and say what Obama can’t. There is nothing at all funny about what the GOP has done to this country.

  5. Truly, in about 10 years The Insider will be regarded as the one of top 5 films of the 90′s. Truly th last great Pacino role, Plummer is so close its scary, and Crowe is just a marvel compared even compared to the rest of his work.

  6. I have not sought this enormous responsibility, but I will not shirk it. Those who nominated and confirmed me as Vice President were my friends and are my friends. They were of both parties, elected by all the people and acting under the Constitution in their name. It is only fitting then that I should pledge to them and to you that I will be the President of all the people. Thomas Jefferson said the people are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty. And down the years, Abraham Lincoln renewed this American article of faith asking, “Is there any better way or equal hope in the world?” cheap tiffany co jewelry
