By common consent, the three Obama-McCain campaign debates will be on the free-flowing and loosey-goosey side, but McCain camp advisers have refused to let Snowmoose Squareglasses debate the wily, free-associating, fork-tongued Joe Biden this way. Whoa, guys...our girl's not good enough at this stuff! Different rules!
Hence the Vice-Presidential debates, set for 10.2, will be much, much simpler with shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, and with much less opportunity for free and footloose moves, boxing, fencing and tap-dancing between Biden and Sarah Palin.
As the N.Y. Times Patrick Healy put it today, "McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive."
The first Obama-McCain debate will happen on Friday, 9.26, in Mississippi.
The Commission on Presidential Debates "had proposed that the first debate be on economic issues, and the third on foreign policy -- in part, people involved in the process said, because the first debate is usually the most watched, and many voters rank the economy as their top concern.
But Obama "successfully sought to flip the proposed topics for the first and third debates, so foreign policy is now coming first and economic and other domestic issues come last.
"There is a second debate, in the format of a town hall meeting, in which the candidates will sit on director's chairs and take questions from the audience and internet users on any topic."

My advice to the Mccain campaign would be to substitute Tina Fey for Sarah Palin during the vice-presidential debates. Nobody can tell the difference between the two and Fey is a lot sharper and better at coming up with clever off-the-cuff remarks.

Don't the McCain people see that their comments immediately back up the fact that Palin has no idea as to what the fuck is going on in the world?
And what about the network that's running it? Why don't they grow a pair and say, "NO-- that's not acceptable."?
Is this whole thing with Palin for real?! I'm waiting for a new Fox reality show to air that shows this has all been a great big joke on America ala "Joe Millionaire".
Christ, I feel like I've been living in a nightmare for the past month.

They're the 'liberal' media, that's why.

If I were McCain's people, part of my strategy would be to allow Biden to freewheel as much as possible. It is a fucking certainty that he would, while thinking he's being so clever and hip, say something so stupid it would immediately cost a point in the polls.

D.Z.-- It has nothing to do with the media being liberal or conservative (and the term 'conservative' has been swiped by a group of freakish, 'Hell House', Jesus-freaks, in my opinion). It has to do with pure journalistic morals. Kowtowing to the latest craze has become disgusting and ugly.
They have a simple job: FACTS. Why there's anything else involved is beyond me.
Network and cable news are a complete farce and contributes as part of the problems.
I feel sick.

Craptastic, since when has the MSM hunkered down and actually reported facts about anything? It's always been a farce, most people just don't care, or at least don't care to look any further than the BS propoganda they shovel down our throats and call "news."

The bigger farce in all of this is the Commission on Presidential Debates, which exist only because the League of Women Voters grew so disgusted with the secrete deals between campaigns to limit the damage a debate could do that they became little more than a forum for topic-related segments of stump speeches. They even called it for what it was, saying "the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter".
I had really hoped that the Obama camp would answer the challenge of McCain's June "series of townhall meetings" with a counter-challenge to return to a honest debate format. They certainly should have seen the Palin-gets-kiddie-wheels farce coming and framed the media spin in that direction to back up the idea that she needs special treatment because she just can't be trusted to swim on her own in the deep end with the rest of the older kids.

So we have two people "applying" for the same job. One has a much longer resume, and more experience. The other does not. So, we level the playing field a little, to make it fair.
I Tha's affirmative action in action, no? That's supposed to be a good thing, right?
Oh, wait. It's for the "other" team, and thus, it's desperately wrong.

Griff - if you want to play that card, then you're left defending the idea that the "team" that is supposedly vehemently opposed to affirmative action, is only so until it can help them.
Which goes along with every other hypocritical thing they do:
Against big government... until they expand it.
Against nation building.... until they have to do it.
Against welfare.... until a corporation will suffer.
Against trade restrictions... until profit falls.
Against regulations... until the financial markets melt.
Against amnesty... until they needed the votes.
Against lies... until they need them to win.
Against inexperience... until they nominated it.
