Words to Fear

"I just heard a radio ad for Eagle Eye (Dreamworks, 9.26), the new Shia LaBeouf thriller. I think it's safe to steer clear of any movie containing the line, 'Somebody's hacking into the power grid!'" -- email received at 4:35 pm from HE reader Mark Smith.

An elaboration: "He's an ordinary guy, thrust into chaos. They're watching him all the time, cat-and-mouse games, he outsmarts them, shit blows up, gets the girl, fast cutting, plot holes, noise, etc." I couldn't care less if I were dead.

How long before the marketing department informs us that :

a. "EAGLE EYE IS A ROLLERCOASTER THRILLRIDE THAT NEVER LETS UP!"

b. "EAGLE EYE IS THE FIRST MUST-SEE MOVIE OF THE FALL!"

c. "EAGLE EYE HAS NON-STOP ACTION AND THRILLS!"

etc etc

Lemme guess, Harry said something like:

Anyway, even if it's nothing more than an Enemy of the State retread, I think I'll enjoy it. Looks like a lark. Disturbia was ordinary, but I fucking loved The Salton Sea so I will cut Caruso a lot of slack.

THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO OWN YOUR ASS.

It's like some people have an active aversion to getting owned by noise, flash and hot chicks. Caruso is solid, this looks to have an awesome green sheen, CHIKLIS is in it. ROSARIO DAWSON is in it, and it looks fast and exciting.

I can't imagine not going to see any action movie shot in 2.35:1.

Other than actionman, who knows his facts, I'm also slightly annoyed but mostly just perplexed as to how and why some of you guys, from Jeff on down, aren't excited about big, sexy action movies. There's a time and place for all genres, but when I go to a movie I mostly want to see people get fucking owned and hot women look hot.

I don't want to sit there and think, damn this is boring.

I also want to point out that film bloggers actively write off September movies and have no interest in EAGLE EYE, but all summer long CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT CARTOON MOVIES AIMED AT THREE YEAR OLDS.

Really, you guys actually have more interest in SHREK 4 or TOY STORY 90 than B-grade widescreen action shit?

I guess it's all in the timing, because Jeff is completely dismissive of this movie and, say, Death Race, but would have no problem devoting 20 blog entries to a similarly big dumb movie in the thick of the summer box office royale.

I'm with LexG. I love movies where I don’t have to think about things like logical plots or character development. Not because I like to check my brain at the door and escape my worries, but because I just never think. About anything. This way I don’t actually have to have an idea or articulate a compound thought. I just use dated hipster slang, like “Owned” to let people know this movie is the shiz-nizz.

I also love the profusive use of phony-looking green screen (as opposed to olde tyme stunts and special effects). That way, not only does the action not have to make sense, it doesn’t even have to be physically possible in the real world.

Also, I LOVE hot chicks. Not in any overtly sexual way though. Just in a lets-oogle-some-cleavage and giggle safe PG-13 way.

So to all you fall film nerds, don't be player hating on this flick, yo.

Am I the only one who doesn't get Shia LeBouf? Granted, I haven't seen all of his movies, but whenever he appears on screen, I think he appears profoundly out of place - it shocks me into thinking, I'm watching a movie, and LeBouf is attempting to play some guy who blah blah...

His first appearance in the black leather on the motorcycle in the last Indiana Jones film was jolting - was this meant to be a farce? Parody? No, he played it straight. But it was so distracting it prevented me from immersing myself into the movie whenever he was on film. I just don't get how he keeps getting prominent roles in films.

He keeps getting roles because of the following:

He's a solid young actor
Girls love him
He has a track record already
He's easy to work with
And The Beard thinks he's the bees knees

He has a long career ahead of him, and he definitely needs to work on his acting range, but he's one of the few young male stars that I actually don't mind watching on screen. Honestly, I could see him become the next Bruce Willis. He has an everyperson's screen presence, and that did wonders for Willis.

But honestly, the main reason why he's been so high profile is that Spielberg digs him.

Actionman - that's sound reasoning, I suppose -- except, IMO, for the "solid young actor" line.

I have my own test to see whether someone is believable on screen that I recommend you try: the next time you have a DVD of a movie, watch it - or at least part of it - with the sound off. What I've discovered is that a good sound mix can mask a lot of really atrocious acting. Conversely, someone like DD Lewis still rocks the screen even with the sound off.

When I submitted Transformers to the test, LeBouf's overacting jumped off the screen. It was laugh-out-loud funny. Yes, Transformers is supposed to be cartoon-like, in many respects, but LeBouf stood out among the other actors - he looked like he was "acting."

Maybe he'll grow out of it, but I'm not sure I would attribute it to youth: I look at the early performances of Will Smith, Cruise, Dillon, and some other tentpole stars and they didn't seem anywhere as misplaced as LeBouf does.

I see your point, and I didn't mean to suggest that I found Shia to be some sort of master thespian. He's adequate and harmless, and on occasion, charming. He does tend to yell and scream and shout his lines, but that might be because of the types of films he's been cast in thus far. I admit, even as a big fan of Transformers, he overacted in many scenes. Could've been his relative lack of experience working with CGI and green screen; or maybe he's just a loud, over-projector of dialogue.

When he's cast in a smaller, more character intensive piece, that'll be the real test.

I just get a good vibe from the guy. I don't think he's brilliant or anything, but he isn't as cheesy as someone like Paul Walker or this up-and-coming toolbox of an actor, Cam Gigadent.

I think you're ignoring one big one; 'Project Greenlight' (despite the fact that very, very few people outside of LA watched it) got him a lot of prominence and got him cast in a lot of things, which then got Spielberg's attention.

I do tend to agree with you here, but the thing is, this movie looks like a piece of shit. And the reason a lot of filmlovers don't care about action movies is that action movies tend not to try very hard, because quality matters very little to box office for action movies.

I mean, 'I Am Legend' and 'Transformers' both beat 'Bourne Ultimatum', and 'National Treasure 2: Even Shittier' came damn close. The profitability doesn't require the extra effort to make the movies quality.

What do you mean "beat?" As in at the box office? I loved Transformers but Ultimatum is clearly the better film. Wasn't a fan of I am Legend after the first hour.

And yeah, Greenlight got him started, and his appearance in Holes helped, but Spielberg has more clout than anyone and anything associated with Project Greenlight. Notice how that show got cancelled?

I think Eagle Eye looks like fun. One person's shit is another person's entertainment. Or something like that...

I want to watch an action movie every once in a while, and, yes, I'd love it if the film had at least half a brain. I don't know what to make of Eagle Eye overall, but based on the slick and sexy trailer, it looks like a solid chip off the old Tony Scott/Michael Bay block and I am all for that.

Agreed, actionman.

Though, is LaBeouf faired with Grandma Monaghan? If it's true that she plays a single mom, then that's even worse. Kind of irresponsible to suggest a 20-ish kid oughta get mixed up with a 40-ish woman with a kid, when he's got his old life ahead of him.

From what I know, there is zero romance between the two. She is playing a single mom, which I guess I could buy, but from what i have read (and trying to avoid the spoilers on this one), there is no romance for Shia and Monaghan. Which is refreshing. Not every action film needs to inject a pointless and time-wasting romantic subplot.

"What do you mean "beat?" As in at the box office?"

I figured "at the box office" was implied to be modifying "beat", yes, since the sentence before it was "quality doesn't matter at the box office" and the sentence itself was describing two bad movies which out-grossed (or "beat at the box office") the best action movie of the decade.

"Wasn't a fan of I am Legend after the first hour."

Yeah, the first act lasts at least an hour, and isn't bad until the movie actually starts and then, subsequently, ends, within about 20 or 30 minutes.

"but Spielberg has more clout than anyone and anything associated with Project Greenlight."

Well, duh. But my point is that Spielberg would never have had the opportunity to notice him if not for the jobs that Greenlight got him. It's been a long time since Spielberg actually discovered talent (if he ever really did). He mines low budget movies for good actors and then puts them in his movies so that he doesn't have to pay movie star prices, but can get quality actors who are "on the rise" (and help boost them, so it's win-win). this is why Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore are in 'Lost World', McConaughey is in 'Amistad', Matt Damon is in 'Private Ryan'...

I just think it's missing a huge part of his career to leave 'Greenlight' out (and I read a recent interview with LaBeouf where he said the same).

"it looks like a solid chip off the old Tony Scott/Michael Bay block and I am all for that."

If a knock-off of Tony Scott is good enough for you, that's cool. I don't even care for "original" Tony Scott, so I'm not going to spend any time on a copy.

I'm just saying, don't pretend that the only reason people think this looks like shit is because it's an action movie.
