A new trailer for Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy (Oscilloscope, 12.10 limited), a.k.a., "A Poor Girl and Her Dog." Wearing short, dark mousey hair and bargain-basement clothes, Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) looks and acts vulnerable-tough in this quiet little character piece. Good work; her first stand-alone lead role. Pic opens nationally in January '09.

One of the best movies I saw at TIFF. It's a really minimal, low key, but extremely insightful film. The end is quietly powerful in a way that I'm guessing most casual audiences will miss, but I thought it was a big step up from the already very strong Oldjoy.

I saw it at the Woodstock Film Festival earlier in the month and I was underwhelmed. David Denby wrote a piece on underdramatization in what he called the Cinema of Observation where he offered a new criticism of cinematic realism. He argued, in essence, that not enough 'happened' dramatically in films of this ilk. And while W&L isn't exactly like Smart People and other films he referenced, it's not an experimental film either. Yes, we emphasize with her suffering but I needed more there there.
Needless to say, I'd be shocked if this grossed more than a few million dollars. Which doesn't invalidate it as an artisitic work, of course, but I'm just saying...

Almost saw this on Sunday, but passed when I realized the same director made Old Joy.
Maybe I made a huge mistake, I can't say. All I know is that Old Joy in particular rubbed me the wrong way and I'd much rather wait to see Wendy and Lucy in the privacy of my own home.

Now that I've seen Denis Villeneuve's Incendies (NY/LA, 4.22), I know that the Best Foreign Language Oscar race is most likely down to a choice between Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful and Susanne Bier's A Better World. Because as compelling and reality-rooted and finely chiselled as Incendies is, it's such an ugly and searing portrait of tribal rage, ignorance, cruelty and sadism that it's finally one of those widely admired films that you'll never want to see a second time, or even think about once it's over.
