I guess I've been so in love with Crowe-as-Moe that I didn't "hear" the reports about Benicio del Toro having the inside track to play the role in the Farrelly brothers film. (I heard them physiologically but psychologically I flinched.) In any case, maybe Nashville-residing HE reader Brad Jones, who's sent along an improved Photoshop image of the New Stooges, would consider doing a new one with Moe del Toro.

"I love the inspired casting choices you have mentioned for the new Stooges movie," Jones wrote, "but yesteday's photoshop image was for shit (as you noted). I couldn't help but work one up this evening to get a little more accurate portrayal.
"But as I was inserting the different actors (brilliant choice with Crowe and Philip Seymour Hoffman), I kept seeing a different face for Larry. There's no doubt that RDJ could pull it off, especially after his sardonic turn in Tropic Thunder, but I kept coming back to Paul Giamatti.
"Now before you dismiss take a look at the pic, remember the work he did in American Splendor, and forget that he's been cast in every other movie over the last two years. He just fits, doesn't he?
"No matter the Larry choice, the Farrely's had better not puss out and go with the likes of Seann William Scott, Jason Biggs or anyone of that ilk."

I know in the long run it won't matter a lick, but one of the things that everyone forgets about the Stooges is how short they were. I don't have any stats on Shemp, but of the classic trio, Curly was the tallest at 5'5". They always looked like deranged dwarfs, especially when they were trying to make moves on one of Columbia's statuesque starlets.
Another name I haven't heard mentioned seems pretty obvious. Mel Gibson is a huge Stooges fan. He even exec produced the TV biopic that starred Chiklis as Curly. I'll bet he's gotten old enough that he'd jump at the chance if offered.

Wouldn't Jack Black have the inside track for Curly?

The Stooges were funny when I was a kid, but not so much anymore. I don't know if I'd want to spend 2 hours with them.
Iggy and the Stooges, now that's another story.

from the look of the picture, it seems that Russell would be a better fit for curly.

Three posts on the Stooges, and not one on Michael Chrichton? I agree with the casting suggestion of Crowe or Gibson, Hoffman and Giamatti - but Chrichton did make an impact in both film and television....c'mon Jeff!

Del Toro will bring a level of psychological integrity to the role that could elevate the entire film. He'll also be physically frightening enough that the audience may fear he'll seriously harm or even kill one of the other Stooges. I hope they go for a Batman Begins/Casino Royale approach and ground the film in reality -- so that when, say, someone is hit with a hammer, blood spurts out and he falls convulsing to the floor.
Moe could be an abusive alcoholic who rules this brothers with an iron hand (and an aluminum baseball bat). They fear and loathe him, but are too pathetic to function without him. But after he puts Curly's eye out with a broken bottle, they track down their long-lost brother Shemp (Viggo Mortensen) a heroin-addicted former CIA assassin, and a murder plot is hatched...
I'm already laughing. All it needs is a couple of those classic Farrelly subplots and it's an instant masterpiece.

Michael Chrichton's passing was a cold dose of mortality - he was a few years older than me. He wrote some good books and was a decent director. RIP
Great job with Photoshop Brad.

The only good thing that can come from this project is all the Stooges shorts coming out on DVD.

The Stooges ahorts are already coming out on DVD. Four chronologial volumes so far, the rest next year.
This picture will be an abomination no matter what, and putting actors of the caliber of Hoffman and Giamatti in it will just make it that much more dreadful.

Why would anyone want to watch this?
The Three Stooges are one of those creations that are so tightly wrapped up in the "actors" who invented them that it's the ultimate ego-trip fool's errand to attempt to recreate them. Each one is a comic projection of the vaudeville-veteran who created him.
There's a certain amount of arrogant hubris of any filmmaker wanting to recreate them along with any actor wanting to portray them. It is simply the most extreme projection of childhood's desire to ape our heroes. Would you take any more seriously three 10 year olds in a film version of the Stooges?
The simple question of color vs. B & W shows the terrible idea this is.
The actual Three Stooges in the still existent recordings is all we should ever need. If you can't get past the B & W, the lack of stereo, the old school cutting and the fact there will be no new ones, that's just tough shit and deserves an eye poke at the very least....
