Not Entirely Her Idea

"I have to say I'm not that interested in making films any more," Nicole Kidman has told a Telegraph interviewer. "I know I'm not meant to say that, but that's where it is for me now.

"I'm 41 years old and very happy being in Tennessee with my baby and with my husband. I obviously have creative blood in me and it needs to come out in some way but I just don't have that burning desire any more. I'm not saying I'm never going to work again, but I'm at peace with whatever happens, which is a nice place to be at this stage of my life."

Just as well, given the BO for Australia.

She's had an amazingly bad five years, but if you look at it without hindsight, her choices were not that bad. She chose Anthony Minghella -- and landed on his one bad film. She chose Sydney Pollack -- and landed on a rare bad film for him. She chose Oliver Hirschbiegel, who made what was unquestionably one of the best films of 2004 -- and that turned into a disaster. She chose Noah Baumbach and Steven Shainberg -- and they both delivered crap films. The comedies I can't defend, of course.

Then one day you wake up and you're Jon Voight and you take every job you can get.

Is there any star who hasn't said something like this and instead said "I love working, just point me to the set, it's so easy I plan to do it till I'm playing ashes in an ashtray?"

She's at home with a new baby. I felt the same way about work after having my daughter. Her opinion will change in a few months after her kid starts going to preschool.

And whatever about Kidman. She's OK. Never been a huge fan but never been a hater. If she's around as an actress I'm fine with that. If not, no biggie. If I had as much money as she did and was a new parent I'd stay home too.

Don't think a lot of people will miss her. I see her doing Broadway and getting glory from the stage; or writing children's books like Madonna. But let's face it - 41 y.o., the roles, the scripts just aren't going to come her way and she's competing against the AJs of the industry.

This is WAY off topic, but what the hell. Eddie Murphy is reportedly going to play Riddler in the next Batman movie. Can't wait to read Jeff's take on that one.

Actionman- I know I'm still continuing ot but Christ almighty, I can't wait for some press deluge on that. Not least for maybe the most excellently formed sentences Mamet has ever uttered:
'' “I talked to Jeremy on the phone, and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury,” (Mamet said.) “So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer.”

I mean really, Redbelt aside, he will always have the last word. Piven should be exterminated, posthaste.

If Nicole's not interested in doing movies any more, why the fuck is she getting all that plastic surgery? For her husband's sake?

great scott, I wouldn't believe any Batman rumors until Chris Nolan officially signs on to do another one, or is replaced.

Shia as Robin? Now I know it's bull because Christian Bale said in an interview he'd quit the role if Robin was introduced. Anyone else think Kate Beckinsale should play Catwoman?

Didn't Tom & Nicole have like 2-3 adopted kids? How come they never talk about those kids but only their biological offspring? Not that I care, but there's something creepy about that.

I've read a number of interviews with Nicole Kidman over the years. She is always making pronouncements that don't marry up with what she actually does. Goodness only knows how many times she's sworn that she's going to take a break from films and then she immediately lines up three in a row. I don't know if she actually believes what she says when she's interviewed and then changes her mind two days later or if she just says what she thinks will make for good press.

Another Batman movie is another three years away at the earliest. It's too early to get worked up over it. By the way, how about Nicole Kidman for Catwoman?

Just kidding.

I noticed that Tom and Nicole's kids made the cover of PEOPLE recently as part of Tom's doing press for VALKYRIE.

Australia was a long movie. In the beginning it kind of reminded me of crocidile dundee, which is not a good thing. I kept watching her forehead, and waiting for it to move somehow, someway. She should take a few years off, stay at home with her baby. She can pick and choose her next movie. I just hope it's a good choice. Seems like a long time ago when she won the oscar. What is it with actors and their bad choices after winning one?

I think what Kidman really means is that she doesn't know whether she wants to be a leading lady/star any more. And frankly, that decision is being taken from her.

I could see her going the Diane Keaton route. Hot as a rocket for the better part of a decade, disappears for awhile, comes back in smaller, character-driven roles. Of course, Keaton has aged gloriously (which is probably more of a tribute to her plastic surgeon) whereas I'm not sure we'll be able to say the same about Kidman. As her body ages, but her face does not, eventually she'll turn into a Nicole Kidman bobblehead.

That sounds like an exact quote from Micheal Caine.
