Big Five
Last night Viola Davis (Doubt), Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Melissa Leo (Frozen River) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) got the red-carpet treatment from the Santa Barbara Film Festival by the handing out of Virtuoso Awards.

The nakedly honest Shannon and Davis got the biggest laughs, although I managed to not capture their best moments on video. Jenkins was his usual elegant, self-effacing self. Leo radiated pluck, positivism, determination. DeWitt was clever and frank, but it was impossible to ignore the fact that she has truly great gams.
Davis made the fundamental point that when most of us think of actors we think of Brad Pitt or Meryl Streep or other marquee names. And yet they, the Big Five, are a much more realistic representation of the acting community. Devoted, hard-working, talented, not necessarily glamorous, etc.
Asked to describe his unique identity as an actor, Shannon said he’d seen Bronson at the Sundance Film Festival, “a movie about a hardcore prisoner who wanted attention and felt that fame was his due so he kept beating guys up, knowing that as long as he did this and was relentless at it that his fame would continue to grow. I’m glad I’m not that guy.”

I prefer to think of Rosemarie Dewitt as the slutty pot-smoking hippie artist.
with great gams.
It’s great that Shannon got a nomination — obviously seems like a great guy, but I thought it was a great performance, as well.
What a stutterer asking the questions, geez…pick a sentence and go with it.
It’s a crime that DeWitt was overlooked for her layered, brilliant performance in Rachel Getting Married while Penelope Cruz gets a completely worthless nomination for her one-note portrayal of damaged, ex-wife goods in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. It’s just not right.
I finally caught up with VCB yesterday and while it was entertaining and enjoyable, it’s ever-so-slight, the ending has no payoff, and it’s a tad overrated. People were actually in agreement that it should have been nominated for best original screenplay? In place of what — something TRULY original like In Bruges? The mind still reels that Synecdoche, NY and Rachel didn’t get original screenplay nods.
I liked the film, thought it was fun and sexy looking, but it was a missed opportunity on more than one level, and Cruz, who is BARELY IN THE FILM, does nothing but whine and moan and bitch. It’s not a performance — it’s a caricature. The stuff with ScarJo and Rebecca Hall was far more involving than the stuff with Cruz.
i agree actionman, i think i liked Dewitt’s performance more than Hathaway’s even. Didn’t feel like a film as much as a window into a tortured family’s soul. Loved every second of it.
I think Hathaway was better than DeWitt. But that’s no crime. She was great. As long as people are talking about nomination snubs, DeWitt is near the top. As is Rachel generally. One nomination is a crime. Especially considering the nominees.
The gams comment dislodged this movie quote from my memory:
“Do you have any control over how creepy you allow yourself to get?”

Action — I caught ‘Barcelona’ on DVD, too and I couldn’t stand the damn thing. Offensive, superfluous narration, extremely delusional and unlikeable characters, and that ridiculous Spanish-guitar track — yuck.
Performances range from bland (Johansson, more crazy eye-straining) to pretty good (Cruz, Bardem).
Yes, the spanish guitar was very annoying. However, I loved the voice-over; found it to be very funny. Bardem was great I thought; oozed a lot of charm. Rebecca Hall was very good too, and I liked ScarJo (she’s just so hot and easy on the eyes that I forgive her only-decent acting chops). Cruz was a major annoyance for me, maybe because I used to date an emotionally unstable hottie who drove me fucking crazy. But yes, every character is incredibly delusional.
To Chase Khan…yes, I stutter and proudly. I have had psychogenic stuttering since childhood – and spent many years in therapy. I proudly do q&a’s. And many people find my stuttering while asking questions to be charming. Respectfully, Roger Durling
