Killshot in Arizona
I’ve been searching around for a few reviews of John Madden‘s Killshot, which opened in five Arizona theatres last Friday (1.23). But all I can find is one by the Arizona Republic‘s Bill Goodykoontz. I was hoping to at least find a review by the Arizona Star‘s Phil Villarreal, but no dice.
Why can’t the Weinstein Co. at least hand out screeners of this film, for critics who ask to see them? Like me. Goodykoontz says it isn’t too bad, so why not? I’ll tell you why not. Killshot isn’t being distributed by the Weinstein Co. Not in Arizona, it isn’t.
An email sent to Arizona critics on 1.21.09 by Allied Advertising & Public Relations’ Jessica Sotelo (and forwarded to me) stated that “Killshot starring Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke is being distributed under the Third Rail Release and NOT The Weinstein Company. Please make any updates/corrections on this with your reviews/opening mentions.”
Damn that’s a Rourke-centric trailer. Have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of those. Though I’m pretty sure this one’s pretty old, I believe Johnny Knoxville’s role was edited out entirely.
Also I wonder how much prettiness Tom Jane would trade for a little more Mickey gravitas. What the fuck has this guy been doing since STANDER?
They filmed a lot of this not far from my house outside Toronto. I’ve long been curious what the deal is.

…ok, having watched the trailer (and I know it’s just a trailer) it seems they have ditched Elmore Leonard’s wit and humour. I haven’t read the book in a long time but I certainly don’t recall it being quite as dark as the trailer seems.
David, I read it about ten years ago as well but it was not one of his lighter Get Shorty, Freaky Deaky efforts. It is more tense with the only real humor coming from the putz of a husband that is more concerned with how the Deer hunting will be in their relocation than with the safety or mental wellbeeing of his wife.
Now if someone would just hire Walter Hill to film City Primievel I would be in heaven.
Jesus, how long has this film been on the shelf? I think I first remember hearing rumors about this on the Coming Attractions site way back when Tarantino was still trying to choose his Pulp Fiction follow-up (of course, he ended up adapting Rum Punch instead, one of the best moves of his career, IMHO).
I love this novel, Leonard, and Rourke, but is there anyone that actually expects this to be halfway decent?
I’d also like to point out that John Madden is almost officially a hack. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was a fluke, or had too much script and cast-wise going for it for him to fuck it up.
Third Rail is a shadow company operated by Weinstein. They essentially handle all the “lesser” product in theatrical release that will ultimately still carry a Weinstein or Dimension imprimatur on DVD. Third Rail was the logo used for the releases of DIARY OF THE DEAD (on the print I projected, anyhow), LOU REED’S BERLIN, THE PROMOTION, HELLRIDE, and EDEN LAKE.
Third Rail also dumped Outlander this weekend, a halfway decent sci-fi vikings vs. aliens movie. I practically had to drive to Mexico to see it.
