Moore-Kutcher Effect

Who buys the idea of 32 year-old Ryan Reynolds pairing off with 44 year-old Sandra Bullock (who, no offense, is starting to look her age somewhat) in The Proposition (Touchstone, 6.12.09)?

On one level it seems almost exciting — at the very least intriguing — that societal standards are such that an older attractive actress can get away today with the same thing that older male actors have been getting away with for decades, i.e., romantic pairings with women 10, 20 and even 30 years younger. This is how it should be, I feel. The Demi Moore-Ashton Kutcher dynamic can and should work for thousands of couples out there. Why not?

On another level, however, I just don’t buy that a guy like Reynolds would go for a woman like Bullock in real life. Why? In a phrase, she’s just not looking as hot as Moore. She’s a very attractive woman with great bones, yes, but she’s looking fairly 40ish and she just seems too old for him. It sounds brutal to say this, but she’s not smokin’ in a way that would persuade a typical good-looking guy of 32 to say, “Yep, she’s my dream lady — a woman of character, smarts and strength whom I hope to have great sex with for the next 30 or 40 years, or at least for the next 25 or 30 years. And with whom I might want to have kids.” I just don’t buy it.

Not exactly Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, though, is it?

  • Jeffrey Wells

Cary Grant was 54 or 55 when he made North by Northwest; he was playing a guy in his mid 40s. Eva Marie Saint was 34 or 35, playing a woman who was “26 and unmarried, now you know everything.” A twenty-year age gap either way, and nobody blinked an eye back in ’59. The thing was, the pairing seemed buyable, reasonable — he would provide love, financial stability, good looks, sophistication and whatnot, and she would provide youth and beauty and urbanity and splendid sex and possibly children. (Although I doubt Roger O. Thornhill would have been interested in child-rearing.) There’s only a 12 year gap between Bullock and Reynolds so it shouldn’t be a huge deal, but I just don’t believe their marriage would work out as well in the long run as Thornhill-Kendall.

  • Rich S.

I was actually comparing the relative merits of the actors themselves, rather than the plausibility of the pairing.

Regardless, Cary Grant was hotter at 55 than Sandra Bullock has ever been in her life. No stretch to think Eva would have wanted to ride that train into the tunnel with him.

  • Krillian

The first half of the movie though, Reynolds doesn’t like her and is only doing it because he has no spine and she’s his boss.

As for marriage, I never believe the marriage will last in 60-70% of the rom-coms I see. Most marriages that last didn’t have an Act 2 reveal in the courtship that meant the woman left him and he had to run cross-town and apologize in public to barely win her back for the happy Act 3 ending.

  • nola

He’s supposed to be her younger assistant so pairing her up with another 40 something wouldn’t have made sense.

Let me guess, at the end of the day they realize they like each other. She becomes less uptight because she is memorized by his six pack.

If she is such such a bad ass exec how come she didn’t know that you need to have legal working papers even if you are from Canada. Whatever.

I like Sandra, not a Reynolds fan at all. I get nothing when I watch him on screen. Nothing.

  • Movie Watcher

What happened to Bullock’s career? She has made some awful choices. I can’t remember the last movie she was in. Maybe she will make better choices. I didn’t know she is 44 years old. How old is Moore? 47? By the way, what happened to her?

  • http://www.robertcashill.blogspot.com btwnproductions

Twelve years? That’s nothing. Ryan Gosling was 16 years younger than Bullock when she turned him into a goose. :)

  • Chase Kahn

I don’t buy Reynolds and Bullock in a Western, either.

  • Bart Smith

Ryan Reynolds was engaged to Alanis Morissette, and while she’s not as old as Bullock, she looks older and isn’t nearly as attractive regardless of age.

  • bacio

well, I guess the real-life situation of Scarlett Johansson and Reynolds being an item kind of proves me wrong, but withouth the beard, Reynolds looks decidedly average and boring. he s got a good body, it appears, but his face is just not that handsome. I don´t see why he would not fall for Bullock.

  • Josh Massey

Actually, both times I’ve seen this trailer play, I’ve heard comments from nearby women proclaiming that Bullock looks a lot better than they expected. And as others have said, the plot dictates the age difference.

“I can’t remember the last movie she was in.”

The fact she was in a Best Picture winner three years ago says a lot about the quality of that “winner,” doesn’t it?

Why do you have such a vendetta against older women, Jeff? Why are you obsessed with women’s appearances?

Are you f–king kidding me? Sandra Bullock looks damn good for her age, and yes, SURPRISE!!! Many younger guys do go for older women.

    Deal with it.

  • Chapman Carruthers

I’d take a 44 year-old Bullock over Scarlet Jo any day of the week.

  • Jeffrey Wells

Wells to DeafBrownTrashPunk: “On one level it seems almost exciting — at the very least intriguing — that societal standards are such that an older attractive actress can get away today with the same thing that older male actors have been getting away with for decades, i.e., romantic pairings with women 10, 20 and even 30 years younger. I have a “vendetta against older women”? Your reading comprehension skills could use some improvement.

You also asked ” Why [am I] obsessed with women’s appearances?” And the world (including each and every woman on the planet earth) pays no attention to this? This settles it — you’re really an idiot.

I’ve been waiting for 15 years for Bullock’s 15 minutes to be over.

She’s so talentless and so average in every way, I wonder what her mass appeal is.

Then again, I wonder why Jennifer Aniston is still in such demand when she’s an even worse actress than Bullock is.

Now, Demi Moore … talentless, yes … but still smokin’!

  • storymark

Is there any better place for loopy and “what the hell are you talking about” relationship stuff than Wells? I don’t think I’ve ever read one of Jeff’s posts on match-ups, or the “way things are” in relationships that didn’t make me roll my eyes.

  • CitizenKanedforChewingGum

It’s a comedy, Jeff, I really don’t think you’re supposed to believe that these two are going to work out in the “long haul.” They seem fundamentally incompatible, that’s kind of the entire “joke,” if you can call it that. This trailer doesn’t really make it clear that they end up tying the knot by the conclusion, anyway (altho’ the rom-com formula 90% of the time dictates that they will…).

I don’t think Bullock was ever hot per se, but she was always cute. And she looks fantastic for 44, are you kidding me?!

  • William Goss

If it were called The Proposition, and not The Proposal, then Danny Huston and/or Guy Pearce would have guns aimed at each of their heads, and I would gladly be forking over nine bucks to see that for myself.

  • Chase Kahn

Aww, dammit, it was just a typo. I thought they were doing a shot-by-shot remake of the John Hillcoat Australian film.

  • buckzollo

I could not help but worry for Sandra and Cameron Diaz, for that matter, upon seeing them at the Globes last night. They seem less relevant, especially SB. She is not hot, rarely makes interesting choices as a performer although she is famous with a couple of $100M+ hits under her belt. The 24/7/365 internet post-Twilight future will not likely be that friendly to her, (even if the studios are.)

  • BurmaShave

Why is this being released in June? It’ll get slaughtered?

  • BurmaShave

Second sentence wasn’t a question. Also it’s weird she’s already playing the eccentric older boss, was TWO WEEKS NOTICE really that long ago?

I’d like to have less Kutcher, thank you very much.

I have never, ever, ever liked Sandra Bullock in anything she’s ever done in her entire career. And Ryan Renolds is like a saltine cracker minus the salt. So who really cares if they get together in this film?

I agree with BurmaShave … this thing is dead in the water this summer.

  • Rod32303

Get ready for another one – the Pfeiffer/Kutcher pairing in “Personal Effects” – 50 year old woman and a 30 year old man.

Whatever, Pfeiffer is still as fucking alluring as ever.

I don’t know why there is so much criticism of this film. I laughed and was delighted at the trailer. It looks like a silly Romantic Comedy similar to Ben Stiller’s pre-Tropic Thunder pre-Night at the Museum movies. Both stars may be negatives, but two negatives make a positive. I was even considering seeing this film. Don’t know if I’ll feel the same way in 6 months, though. This really should be released mid-February, around Valentine’s day.
