Slumdog-ers Retort
I can’t link or paste from an iPhone, but Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, producer Christian Colson and distributor Fox Searchlight have sent out a strongly worded response to the Telegraph story that appeared earlier today (and which I linked to three or four hours ago) about two kid actors allegedly having been paid dog wages for their performances. The essence of the refutation is that most of the long-term payment went to the kids’ education.
Phew! That’ll prevent the kids’ families from stealing their money and wasting it on things like “food” and “shelter” and “medicine.” Fortunately Boyle, Colson, and the good people at Fox Searchlight know what’s best for these children.
Smear smear smear.
It must be Oscar season.
Given the growing success of this film, including its possible win at the Oscars, it seems right for Boyle and co. to help this kids out right now, as well as in the future.
What good is education money if they drop dead long before that?

I wonder how long it’ll take the Watchmen/X3 Rothman-haters to flip-flop now.
From Awards Daily
FILMMAKERS STATEMENT:
From the moment that we hired them and long before the press became interested in this story, we have paid painstaking and considered attention to how Azhar and Rubina’s involvement in the film could be of lasting benefit to them over and above the payment they received for their work. (MORE)
The children had never attended school, and in consultation with their parents we agreed that this would be our priority. Since June 2008 and at our expense, both kids have been attending school and they are flourishing under the tutelage of their dedicated and committed teachers. Financial resources have been made available for their education until they are 18. We were delighted to see them progressing well when we visited their school and met with their teachers last week.
In addition to their educational requirements, a fund is in place to meet their basic living costs, health care and any other emergencies. Furthermore, as an incentive for them to continue to attend school a substantial lump sum will be released to each child when they complete their studies. Taking into account all of the children’s circumstances we believe that this is the right course of action.
Since putting in place these arrangements more than 12 months ago we have never sought to publicize them, and we are doing so now only in response to the questions raised recently in the press. We trust that the matter can now be put to bed, and we would request that the media respect the children’s privacy at this formative time in their lives.

DISTRIBUTORS STATEMENT:
The welfare of Azhar and Rubina has always been a top priority for everyone involved with Slumdog Millionaire. A plan has been in place for over 12 months to ensure that their experience working on Slumdog Millionaire would be of long term benefit. For 30 days work, the children were paid three times the average local annual adult salary. Last year after completing filming, they were enrolled in school for the first time and a fund was established for their future welfare, which they will receive if they are still in school when they turn 18. Due to the exposure and potential jeopardy created by the unwarranted press attention, we are looking into additional measures to protect Azhar and Rubina and their families. We are extremely proud of this film, and proud of the way our child actors have been treated.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I still find it funny that a film that speaks highly of street vs. book education, such that Jamal’s amazing wisdom at one point is his awareness of how much a snack costs at x location in a slum, should get into this predicament, where the actors will get paid if they stay in school.
Ummm…DZ…what fanboy LIKES Narnia? Now, I will admit, Narina 2 is one of the best stoner films I have ever seen, but it’s an awful movie by any rational standard.
As usual the press never has anything better to report.
hunter: I’d imagine the same fanboys who like LOTR.
ummm, no. LOTR are well made films. Period. Okay, so part 3 had like 14 endings, but still…Narnia is pandering bullshit with poor cinematography and broad as a barn door screenwriting.
There is little real overlap.
That said, here is why narnia 2 is the best stoner movie ever…
You got one guy who looks like Saddam Hussein with an afro.
Another guy who looks like Tim Curry, circa CLUE.
The first hour is basically about thinking of crazy stuff to do to/involving a midget a dwarf.
A: Said dwarf shoots a grizzly bear with an arrow in order to save an 8-year old girl in ren-fair clothes because she thinks she can talk to it.
B: The dwarf is beaten and thrown in the ocean.
C: the dwarf swordfights an adolescent.
D: The dwarf appears to be in a gay relationship with a badger.
Also, it’s of some note that there is no real narrative reason for the existence of this dwarf or his continued presence.
In between scenes, it appears that a small child decided to take some LSD because she has some crazy hallucinations. Later, she has an acid flashback and sees a magic lion.
When the jesus/lion/icon shows up someone actually asks him about his omnipotence and he deflects the question and the responsibility for 10,000s of deaths and hundreds of years of slavery with, “nothing can happen the same way twice” as if this answers anything.
Then, the lion roars and makes a sea monster which sorta kicks ass. Then, in the end, the lion affirms his his omnipotence through choosing to regrow a talking mouse’s tail, (as a reward for slitting so many throats on screen?), instead of ressurecting the dead or helping someone who was maimed in a significant way.
Also, the mouse is voiced by Eddie Izzard and it seems like he might still be a transvestite based upon the effeminate feather on his head.
Also, the first faux-climax devolves into a mix of Rocky and Hamlet, even though the movie had, until this point, been content to rip off MacBeth.
And then, it seems like this movie is sort of about how awesome and righteous the Crusades were…but I can’t tell because the various Christian metaphors were way too convoluted. The film is like one, giant, half-literate mixed metaphor.
AWESOME.
Also, even though the movie is a period piece, it ends with a deliciously subversive and modern sounding song from Jewish Anti-Folk artist Regina Spektor.
qwiggles, i don’t think the point boyle makes is that street education is BETTER than book education. just that street education aint worth nothing (as is the orthodoxy here in Bombay… they’re treated as less than dogs by the government, police, the wealthy, me sometimes when i’m in a creap mood shoo them away from my rickshaw when the kids touch the inside of my arm). jamal succeeds because it’s his destiny, because he’s a good guy, because he’s very, very lucky. the last thing anyone in India would argue is that education isn’t worth anything, that’s a false dichotomy. but that the probability of a kid transcending class in the world is massively enhanced by their ability to speak english and the other things one learns in a classroom. it’s actually really heartbreaking how many bright kids you see here who have little chance in life, while dull-eyed children of the master’s of the universe have no doubt about their success. and those kids are obviously bright and have a real chance if they get themselves educated and supported in the right way.
from the previous thread, obviously not going to go out and find the kids this weekend. danny boyle is deserving of the chance to take care of these kids and it was a pretty shitty response by me to get geared up to interfere without letting it all play out a little bit.
I mean: when i’m in a crap mood and shoo them away from my rickshaw when they touch the inside of my arm.
Fuck off, D.Z. I hear that on the Internets, the most idiotic segments of society can have their own websites. Look into it.
Education is a powerful tool. It would be fantastic for those street kids to go to school, learn to read and write, gain new skills and knowledge, and with those skills, they can determine their own futures.
I think it’s sad that some people here don’t think education is all that important. Wow.

“That’ll prevent the kids’ families from stealing their money and wasting it on things like “food” and “shelter” and “medicine.”"
So, you didn’t read the response at all, then, you just assumed that Wells had summarized it in its entirety? Since it’s too much trouble to read an entire article, even one that short, let me give you a key sentence:
“In addition to their educational requirements, a fund is in place to meet their basic living costs, health care and any other emergencies.”
“hunter: I’d imagine the same fanboys who like LOTR.”
One thing I will say in DZ’s favor; he sometimes acknowledges that his point is entirely imagined by him, and has no basis in reality.
hunter: By fanboys, I mean people who’ve read the books since the beginning, not illiterates who go to movies for summaries.

For example, a same suit Made in China, might marked five to ten dollars that would cost one hundred dollars that made in Western countries. Many people couldn’t afford for it but Chinese goods are most popular now than ever before. The popularation of Chinese objcets is almost covered the market place all over the world, including the European and American markets.
