Updike’s Last
“It came to me the other day:
Were I to die, no one would say,
‘Oh, what a shame! So young, so full
Of promise — depths unplumbable!”
“Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes
Will greet my overdue demise;
The wide response will be, I know,
‘I thought he died a while ago.’
“For life’s a shabby subterfuge,
And death is real, and dark, and huge.
The shock of it will register
Nowhere but where it will occur.”
– From John Updike‘s forthcoming collection, “Endpoint and Other Poems.” Posted today in the N.Y. Times Op/Ed section.
That’s pretty much accurate.
I remembered when a lot of people thought Johnny Cash was already dead and were surprised by the news of his death not too long ago.
Not a snappy as “either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”, but I guess it will have to do.
I remember this from Cheever’s Journals: Someone called him up in the middle of the night in 1976 and told him that Updike had died.

That’s pretty badass. Bravo, Updike. And thus – contrary to his sentiment – I’ll say it is a shame we lost him.

manner. Any crow of sense could see that you are only stuffed
with straw.’ Then he hopped down at my feet and ate all the corn
he wanted.
