Updike’s Last

“It came to me the other day:

Were I to die, no one would say,

‘Oh, what a shame! So young, so full

Of promise — depths unplumbable!”

“Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes

Will greet my overdue demise;

The wide response will be, I know,

‘I thought he died a while ago.’

“For life’s a shabby subterfuge,

And death is real, and dark, and huge.

The shock of it will register

Nowhere but where it will occur.”

– From John Updike‘s forthcoming collection, “Endpoint and Other Poems.” Posted today in the N.Y. Times Op/Ed section.

  1. That’s pretty much accurate.

    I remembered when a lot of people thought Johnny Cash was already dead and were surprised by the news of his death not too long ago.

  2. Not a snappy as “either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”, but I guess it will have to do.

  5. At the moment, you’ll have a feeling of proud. The articles by China’s manufacturers are not only in a good quality, but also in a great many of quantity, and in a very lower price. For example, a same suit Made in China, might marked five to ten dollars that would cost one hundred dollars that made in Western countries. Many people couldn’t afford for it but Chinese goods are most popular now than ever before.The popularation of Chinese objcets is almost covered the market place all over the world, including the European and American markets.
