Kind of funny, but if anything the opposite is true. Many of the guys that worship Watchmen have read it so many times they can recite scenes from memory. Now whether they could tell you why it’s supposed to be so revolutionary or mind-blowing, on the other hand….

Did you see a LOT of angry, furious hate comments posted by fanboys when the Hollywood Reporter published a negative review of The Watchmen yesterday? God, that was so funny.

you have NO dog in this race, do you…

  • Mark G.

I saw it yesterday (never read the graphic novel) and I liked it. It’s not a masterpiece but it does have a couple of masterful scenes which offset the not so good scenes.

    I gave it a very solid B

Just to put it in perspective: Last year no movie got an A from me and about twenty films got Bs (ranging from B+ to B to B-)

  • JChasse

I am fully prepared to like this. I re-read the graphic novel at least once a year and still pick up something new every time. So I am going to go see it, with the wife and kids, prepared to be disappointed about some things and thrilled about others.

    Questions:

    1) Why should anyone go to a movie prepared to hate it?

    2) Why is it so important to talk people out of seeing it?

  • ZayTonday

JChasse: The answer to your questions I think is that Jeff feels a strong resentment towards any movie based on a comic book because those movies get all the budget money from the studios and force original works without any kind of brand name power to fight for the scraps.

  • Rich S.

ZayTonday, I think that’s only half the equation. You’ll notice that all these reviews are coming from people who have actually seen Watchmen, while Jeffrey has not. In fact, Jeffrey may be the only industry guy on the planet who has not been invited to some kind of press screening. Draw your own conclusions as to why that might make him attempt a takedown.

  • ZayTonday

Rich: I think you may be mixing up cause and effect.

  • Rich S.

Nah. Jeffrey didn’t start the takedown until he was banned from the screenings.

Don’t get me wrong. He’s definitely predisposed to hate on something like Watchmen. But this one has gone a little above and beyond.

  • JChasse

Zay: I started writing a reply to your comment six different ways before realizing that, to put it simply, you’re right. Make a movie with CGI and slap a “2” after the title, and the studios think they’re halfway home. Who needs good acting and a script, right? Just as long as the picture on the screen looks pretty. But there are bigger dragons to slay than “Watchmen”. Do you build a “strong resistence” to a movie based on a sex and violence pulp novel (The Godfather) or a book about a killer shark (Jaws)? Jeff’s got a problem with the media. Between this and his bitching about how newspapers are dying, it makes me wonder if he would’ve been gnashing his teeth for all those poor horseshoe makers once cars started becoming popular.

Sorry if I sound so cranky, but I’ve just suffered through the first eight weeks of 2009 looking at new releases, and only going to see “Coraline”, and that was grudgingly. Thank goodness for the 2008 holiday overlap.

  • JChasse

By “media”, I mean “medium”, I mean comic books.

Rich, don’t you think he may have been banned from the screenings due to his bias against comic book movies? That’s what I meant with my last post.

  • Rich S.

Maybe, but I think it’s more of a Warners thing. Recall, he actually liked TDK at first, before he backtracked as he is wont to do. I’m sure someone who tracks these things more closely than I can explain the falling out. But I don’t think it was comics related per se.

Isnt jackie earle haley in a mask the whole movie?

Why is Heigl’s dead fiance in this flick?

    “Jeffrey Wells’ Blog. February 27th, 2009. :

Indie film screening at Arclight this morning, cigarette burn on burst film reel. The internet is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.

The fanboys sites are extended gutters and the gutters are full of hyberbole and when the drains finally scar over, all the vermin will drown.

The accumulated filth of all their fanboy raves and popcorn flicks will foam up about their waists and Steven Spielberg and Zack Snyder will look up and shout “Save us!”…

And I’ll look down and whisper “no.”

  • ZayTonday

    Well played Ethan, lol

Is that SomethingAwful.com review from a joke webpge or not? Because I’ve read the first page of the review and if counting mistakes and errors were a drinking game, I’d have slid off my chair and fallen asleep already.

  • ZayTonday

You only read the first page? You HAVE to read the whole thing, it is absolutely hilarious.
