Evil Trio
I had lunch two days ago with a friend. At one point he mentioned the two most despicable human beings on the planet right now — Bernie Madoff for obvious reasons, and that 73 year-old Austrian guy, Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter for 24 years for purposes of sexual enslavement, which resulted in seven kids. I nodded but knew there was someone else. It hit me this morning — Octomom. She’s actually the worst of the three. Madoff and Fritzl were merely diseased monsters who satisfied their lusts, but Nadya Suleman represents malignant selfishness (born of celebrity-worshipping delusion) among this country’s lower classes.
There are tens of thousands of despicable human beings out there. Just because they dont make the papers or the AP newswire doesnt mean they don’t exist.
Sorry, Jeff. Malignant selfishness does not compare to the horror show of Josef Fritzl. Besides, I think it takes a bit of malignant selfishness to lock away your daughter in an underground dungeon for your own sexual gratification. Josef Fritzl is clearly the worst person on the planet, bar none.
I guess Wells has a bit of a point. What Fritzl did was monstrous, but at least he kept it in the family, so to speak. Octomom, who will wind up being an abusive parent anyway (having that many kids is automatically abusive in terms of how little you can truly give to each child), is also taking money out of the pockets of taxpayers, setting a poor example for other people, and as Jeff described, represents exactly what’s wrong with our culture.
In that regard, Fritzl is the least of the three because he’s an aberration. Octomom and Madoff are both mirrors of our sick and twisted society and where our values lie.

Octopussy isn’t in the same league as Madoff or Fritzl – she’s certainly loathsome, but she’s also typifies the narcissistic sense of entitlement that got the economy into this mess to begin with.
Thing is, if any of us actually KNEW every single awful thing going on on this planet right now, these three probably wouldn’t even make the top 10. Not even Fritzl. There’s about 10,000 kids living in African war-zone shantytowns (or worse) right now who, if you told them what Bernie Madoff was considered “evil” for, would look at you in abject perplexment, say “you think THAT’S bad??” and then take you down the road to meet someone (or something) who’s existence you wouldn’t ‘buy’ in a Lynch movie…

In the fight of Octomom vs. Gloria Allred, however, i find myself actually rooting for Octomom.
I’d say Fritzl is the least interesting of the three, though also the one most easily labeled “evil”. Let’s say we made movies about all three. Octomom and Madoff would have thematic resonance as nighmarish extentions of society’s worst impulses while Fritzl would be a voyeristic freak show. Unless you made it about the media’s fascination with him. I’m not sure how much talk there is about him, but since he was the one whose actions Wells had to describe the media circus probably isn’t as distracting in the U.S as here in Europe. Here he’s the biggest distraction from important news in a long time.
At this point, I’m leaning toward Suleman too, only because the media finds her the most fascinating of the three. The thought of seeing daily news updates on her and her helpless brood for the rest of my life makes me want to pull a Natasha Richardson on the nearest tree.

Bandini, if you’re going to make a “too soon” joke, at least make it funny.
Also, if you want to talk pure numbers, how many people’s lives did Madoff destroy? It doesn’t paint as colorful a picture as Fritzl’s story but it’s far more overreaching.
What makes you think I was joking? Natasha Richardson’s death was enviable. One really bad headache, then it’s all over. Watching the Nadya Suleman tragi-comedy unfold day after day is like dying from slow, agonizing brain cancer.

Whether or not I like Octomom, I just find it amusing that conservatives were the first on the bandwagon to bash her, since you’d figure they’d embrace her image for pro-life rallies.

They ain’t stupid. They know that she looks like the best argument FOR abortion in a long while, and they don’t want to be seen supporting her.
