Woodstock Days

For what a trailer is worth, Taking Woodstock director Ang Lee has hit the right comic-realism tone. Nobody’s doing “comedy” but it feels likably funny. And Lee doesn’t seem to have gotten anything wrong in his recreation of two distinct late ’60s cultures — Jewish Catskills and urban American hippie. And you can tell that Demetri Martin, who plays the lead role of Elliot Tiber, has that driven but amiable-plucky quality that we all like.

I’ve never watched Martin’s Comedy Central show (and I have no guilt about that) so introducing the film with pencil drawings seemed inspired, or at least unfamiliar.

This being the first look at the film, it’s not surprising that the trailer overlooks the fact that Tiber was and is a chip off the old Ennis del Mar block. I have to say I was a bit taken aback by Liev Schreiber‘s transgender appearance (including blonde tresses). But you can tell right away that Emile Hirsch is going to rule in this thing. The other costars are Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Paul Dano, Imelda Staunton. Whi’s the actor playing Woodstock organizer-producer Michael Lang?

  1. I don’t know. Basing it on a true story but not having anyone in the credits playing Jerry, Janis, or any of the musicians at woodstock, from what i can gather.

rather just watch GIMME SHELTER again.

  2. Martin “premiered” the trailer on his show last nite. It does look rather sweet, and the comparison is apt. I’m also surprised to hear that Martin is 35; i figured late-20s

  3. “Basing it on a true story but not having anyone in the credits playing Jerry, Janis, or any of the musicians at woodstock, from what i can gather.”

The one thing that would make this movie suck is having people play Jerry, Janis, Jimi, Bert Sommer. etc.

  4. If Demitri Martin is 35, then Ralph Machio must be 45 … oops … maybe he is 35.

Looks good. Like a companion piece to ‘Almost Famous’.

  5. Ugh.

Looks about as good as Alice’s Restaurant.

Some of you liked Almost Famous?

    Huh.

I though that movie was pretty vague and starchy considering it came from someone who was on the inside of that scene.

I mean, Billy Crudup’s character was wearing tapered jeans and Timberland boots. None of you thought that was kind of strange?

    Whatever.

    It’s a classic, right?

    So says you.

  6. I like how Ang Lee is working the “business” angle of the Woodstock concert in this film. It’s an interesting premise to have a family on the verge of defaulting on a loan (sound familiar?) so they decide to make money from Woodstock–of all things! Taking Woodstock definitely has possibilities. Lee is one of our more thoughtful filmmakers right now.

  7. I love the look of the film and the font style used is very 60′s. Break out the bellbottoms and tiedye. If I still had hair, I’d grow it long again.

  8. MilkMan — Ever the contrarian. It’s OK to hate a movie, even a beloved movie. But disingenuous writing tics like expressing “surprise” that others might love a movie that clearly is well loved by enomous amounts of the very types of folks reading this site is just fucking annoying.

As to this Ang Lee film; for me, historical films of recent eras tend to live an die on their production design, costumes, and make-up. Have they captured the era just paid lip service? Remember Julianne Moore’s shiny make-up from Boogie Nights? God, it was so perfect for that mid 70′s look.

So this Ang Lee film feels sort of right on and sort of off. I like Demetri Martin, a lot, but he doesn’t particularly scream 1970 to me. It might be because his hair is the exact hair cut he always wears, but it didn’t seem all that right.

The two second snippet of the guy playing Michael Lang seemed about perfect though, as did Emile Hirsch, playing whatever the hell he was playing.

For whatever reason, though, the movie didn’t give of a A-level quality vibe that I generally expect from Lee. I hope this things great, but the trailer didn’t quite leave that impression…

I thought it was interesting when Martin introduced the trailer on his show last night. He mentioned that there’s this new Ang Lee movie that starts Gene Levy, Emile Hirsch, and Liev Schrieber, and “me.” You were left with the immediate impression that he basically had a 3 minute part in the film… then the trailer comes up and you realize he’s the whole movie… Good for him.

  9. Almost Famous is a “beloved” movie? Really? And I’m the one who needs to change his prescription? Huh? Really? I’m shocked. And surprised.

  10. I don’t like being talked down to about Ang Lee’s filmography like I’m listening to one of those jerk announcers at the Sucklight. Anyway, I’m kind of disheartened Lee’s venturing into the Ron Howard/ Robert Zemeckis-wannabe territory, since that tends to be a career-killer. [See David Fincher.] Still looks more tolerable than Across the Universe, though.

They’re gettin’ their own biopics you can purchase separately.

  11. I was a big fan of ‘Almost Famous’ when it came out, but it really didn’t hold up for me at all. It came off as a lot more smug and sanitized than I remember it.

  12. That’s it, next film I see at the Arclight I’m yelling “Tarantino is this generation’s greatest filmmaker” just to see if D.Z. pops up like a Berkeley Breathed character, no matter how much the wife will glare at me on the way home for embarrassing her.

  13. D.Z. says…

    …Well then who’s on first?

    Yes.

    I mean the fellow’s name.

    Who.

    The guy on first.

    Who.

    The first baseman.

    Who.

    The guy playing…

    Who is on first!

Im asking YOU who’s on first.

    That’s the man’s name.

    That’s who’s name?

    Yes.

Well go ahead and tell me. That’s it. That’s who?…

  14. Wells, the actor playing Michael Lang is Jonathan Groff — who was nominated for a Tony for his work in SPRING AWAKENING. Except for a role on daytime’s “One Life to Live” and a movie that apparently premiered on the Internet, this is his first major feature film role. He was one of the leads in the Central Park staging of HAIR last summer but left before the end of the run to shoot this film. He opted NOT to do the Broadway revival in favor of a Craig Lucas play off-Broadway.

  15. Folks,

Why the hate on ALMOST FAMOUS…? My UNTITLED Blu Ray is one of my most-watched DVDs. Movie is CLASSIC.

    FEVER DOG.

    “These will set you free”

    “Don’t take drugs”

    “I am a golden god!”

    “It’s all happening!”

Ben Fong Torres delivery of “Crazy…” Best Nerdy Asian Dude EVER.

Geez. ALMOST FAMOUS is the SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION of fictionalized, coming of age, autobio pics. And Phillip Seymore Hoffman as Lester Bangs?

How can you people NOT like ALMOST FAMOUS?

Next you’ll be saying STAND BY ME sucks.

  16. I don’t want to hate on it, it’s certainly far from a terrible movie, but let’s just say there’s a reason that nobody has ever asked Patrick Fugit to carry another movie.

  17. Patrick Fugit actually does pretty well in the right kind of role. He was perfect in Wristcutters: A love Story. Of course…that film was sort of based around people being totally unable to display emotion…

In other news, I’ve been referred to as “the lester bangs of slasher films”…whatever that means

  18. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Almost Famous was born stale. The protaganist is a music lover with no personaily, and surprisingly, falling in love with another music lover with no personality doesn’t improve his situation.

  19. milk — i have original opus and bill pushies still with tags (don’t ask)….. make an offer (i can use the dough)…..

  20. The nike air force ones would even have numerous refreshed editions which achieves almost a total of 800 million dollars annually as a revenue account. Our team here in BAK even mentioned once in our postings that Nelly even added something exciting to it by coming up with a song called the Air Force Ones as an expression of his love for the iconic product. Nelly, as a leading hip hop sensation made an amazing influence to the overall popularity standing of the Nike shoe model.
