Guilty Aforethought
A Manhattan all-media Observe and Report screening is happening tomorrow night. I consider it vital to attend and report. I was told last night that the ending is (this may be putting it too specifically) Travis Bickle-ish. Whatever. The guy I spoke to called it Seth Rogen‘s last fat role — his no-holds-barred kiss-off to the fat chapter in his life.
I saw the amazing trailer for this infront of I Love You, Man (very funny) on Saturday night and the sold-out crowd’s response was…well…there wasn’t much of one. People just won’t get this movie — they think it’s Paul Blart 2 with some F-bombs. I think people, in general, will be turned off by the white-trash vibe that the movie (and Rogen’s character in particular) are giving off.
Personally, this is one my most anticipated films of the year. Jody Hill is a genius — if this flick has an ounce of the mean-spirited, subversive wit of The Foot Fist Way and Eastbound and Down it will be incredible. It was sad last night not to have Eastbound on at 10:30pm — can anyone substantiate th rumor that HBO is ordering an 8 episode 2nd season?
I cannot, CANNOT put Seth Rogen and Travis Bickle in the same sentence together, sorry. (I do like Rogen, though)
and actionman, ditto. I am apalled by the trailers, they are TRYING to make this look like a slapstick comedy, no doubt, yet I’ve heard contrary reports about how the movie is really dark.
Actionman: in America, “people, in general” ARE “white-trash vibe”, so having them misunderstand the movie can only help it on opening weekend.
I’m looking forward to it too, tho’ I found Eastbound… rather unfunny. Love McBride in other people’s movies but when he’s doing the obnoxious-asshole thing in the lead, a little goes a very long way. Can’t help thinking O&R was written for McBride and that somebody said “let’s get a bigger name”.
Yeah, Mike, you’re right. And the point you make is very, very sad.
However, we’ll have to disagree about McBride’s work in EB&D. I thought it was just about perfect. It’s not comedy for all tastes, that much I can admit. I just think McBride is a serious comedic talent.
Rogen’s last fat role …. until his ‘skinny’ roles stop making money. Part of his appeal is his everyman schlub roles, so he isnt going to be skinny for long. I seriously doubt he’ll be Rhett Butler in the Gone With the Wind remake.
As many know, he lost all that weight for ‘The Green Hornet’ which was pulled, so he can start eating cheeseburgers again.
This movie’s going to bomb. No-one (meaning the general public who think this is another Mall Cop comedy) wants to see Paul Blart Jr. going postal.
i saw it a little over a week ago, it’s relentlessly dark with some pretty funny moments (skateboarders scene a particular guilty pleasure)… but i was a bit surprised as to the level of violence…
didn’t like it as much as ‘foot fist way’ because it’s so much slicker…
several of us had the same feeling that it was originally written for mcbride (even though hill says ‘no’)……
im sorry but mcbride ruined pineapple express for me. the first half was funny but it just got so fucking stupid and needlessly violent and improbable in the last half. he really bugs the hell out of me.
“relentlessly dark” — sounds great to me.
and when McBride crashes into the barn at the end of PE, smashing Craig Robinson with his car, and announces that “You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos, motherfucker!” — well, that might be the best comedy movie moment in years.
Whenever I see these pics of Rogen with short hair I think he’d make a much better Curly than Jim Carrey.
“The guy I spoke to called it Seth Rogen’s last fat role — his no-holds-barred kiss-off to the fat chapter in his life.”
This PR person deserves a huge pay raise. He/she read up on Wells’ likes and dislikes and sold him the film pitch-perfectly.
Eastbound and Down and Observe and Report are operating on another level. Jody Hill is an astonishingly original and talented voice in comedy.
“his no-holds-barred kiss-off to the fat chapter in his life.”
But has he shaved his back hair?
I saw this piece of shit last week. People under 21 are going to love it. This is the perfect movie to watch when you’re stoned or drunk out of your mind, or if you find male nudity hilarious.
Worst thing about it was that it felt like the whole thing was just one big improv. Rogen seemed to ad lib just about every single line, and most of them just weren’t funny.
Poor Ana Farris. I don’t know what disturbed me more, the fact that she starred in such a bad movie, or her distracting as fuck, enhanced lips.
I pray to God that her bee stung lips were for the movie, and not any type of real life cosmetic enhancement on her part, cuz she’s way too young to be going down that road.
If people want to get excited about this movie because it looks like a good comedy, then fine. That’s cool. It’s when people start throwing around the Taxi Driver stuff that I get agitated and feel the need to post another pointless comment.
Taxi Drive, as far as I can tell, is not a comedy. There is nothing broad or lowest common denominator or cartoonish about Taxi Driver. The movie that Scorsese and De Niro made is almost unclassifiable.
Because I am a sentient being who likes to watch television when I get home from my incredible shitty and stultifying job, I have been blitzed with trailers for O & R for the last month or so. The tone of the film, the acting, the way it looks…how can some people say that it looks “dark?” Ray Liotta asks Seth Rogen what the Mexican guy says and Seth Rogen says I don’t know, I don’t speak Spanish…
Rim shot.
Seth Rogen tazes an Indian (?) man for not moving his car…
Ba-dump.
Anna Faris hysterically crying, over-emoting, and generally doing her clown schtick for the umpteenth time…
This strikes everyone as daring and edgy and dark?
It’s a fucking comedy.
Drunk mothers falling off of a Laz-E-Boy recliner.
Where amongst these comedic tropes are some people finding the surreal, nightmarish, post-noir tone of Taxi Driver?
Because Seth Rogen plays a hateful, racially insensitive stalker? That’s all it takes for the Taxi Driver comparisons to be drawn out?
What about Scorsese’s use of color? And sound? His camera placement? Jody Hill does all of these things too?
I understand it when the dolts working at the studios and independent production companies and talent agencies make ridiculous, ignorant comparisons based on their complete lack of film knowledge. What bothers me is when this attitude drips down to people who should know better.
It is a comedic Taxi Driver. Even you will realize that after watching it. You might want to hold off on these rants until then. You’ll feel less stupid.
The only thing that will make me feel less stupid is not reading your comments.
It sounds like this film takes a turn similar to Rogen’s PINEAPPLE EXPRESS … a comedy that has a nasty, violent streak.
Having said that, this is pretty funny.
“Fuck you, Saddam Hussein of Iraq.”
MilkMan, I think people are making Travis Bickle comparisons, not TAXI DRIVER ones. I know it’s still a little bit shaky, but it’s a distinction.
Give Paul Schrader a little credit in the creation of Travis Bickle.
Seems like they are now cutting the TV trailer to show the constant violence factor and play down the romantic angle.
actionman, where did you hear about the EASTBOUND & DOWN renewal?
Everything’s in the pitch, MilkMan. Don’t fight what you know deep within your curdling soul.
Travis Bickle: Mall Cop. There’s your high concept. Go write the check. What does our culture exist for, if not to cannibalize and adulterate at our leisure?
But in the future, we’ll all be watching remakes of trailers we saw three weeks ago, so be happy that someone is at least name-dropping a classic film all the way from the 17th century.
In fact, one of those enterprising young whippersnappers should do a mashup Taxi Driver trailer — take the Grodin scenes and make it look like a romantic comedy!
Or maybe Deniro can do a sorta-kinda sequel where he plays a guy secretly filming one of those taxicab confession series, but the camera actually records a…MURDER! Smells like DePalma.
All else fails, throw in some androgynous boy vampires. For twelve-year old girls, they are the new ponies.
And Jody Hill may be a talented dude, but Danny McBride is a poor man’s John Schuck.
Not that it was the point of anything you just said, but I would love for DeNiro and DePalma to work together again. People forget they’ve already got 4 films under their belt.
Either comparison is ridiculous. This movie is for Frat Guys who major in something other than Poli-Sci. Enjoy wasting your money. Seth Rogen is not Robert De Niro. He’s Rob Reiner on drugs.
Circumvent — it was a rumor I read a few weeks ago on a blog somewhere…can’t remember exactly…
but here’s a tidbit for ya:

“He’s Rob Reiner on drugs. ”
Terrifyingly true.
How could Eastbound and Down come back again? It plays like a mini-series; if it comes back, they’ll probably ruin the amazing ending they have.
