“Ralph…siddown!”

It’s been pointed out in a 3.23.09 Digital Bits chat between readers and Warner Home Video executives, but I’ll repeat it anyway: Heat is “currently being remastered for Bluray” under the supervision of director Michael Mann, and that WHV hopes “to have it out shortly.”

  1. Maybe I’m in the minority, and while Blu-Ray is somewhat impressive (especially some of the newer films), I cannot in good conscience invest in another format that will be dead or dying in 7-10 years. You can’t stop technology.

I have a huge dvd collection, and thats good enough for me, because I cant start all over again.

The only saving grace may be if other studios start doing what disney’s doing which is packaging dvds with blu-rays. Then I’d wait for the $99 blu-ray player and have both formats at my disposal. Otherwise, forget it.

  2. Speaking of Mike Mann and digital, does anyone else think the digital photography of Public Enemies looks totally wrong? I think you lose a layer of believability when a 30′s period piece looks like fluid, cutting edge high definition video. I know Mann is a big fan of the digital workflow, but there are some genres that are simply better served by film.

Someone said this the other day, maybe it was you, and it struck me as odd then because Warners (and maybe one other studio, don’t remember which) were doing the same thing with HD-Dvd’s where they would have a regular dvd on the other side. The problem was this drove up the cost of those discs $5-$10 more than the standalone hd-dvd discs, thus making them less appealing.

I don’t have any links to prove it, but I thought I had read back when the format war was going on that statistics showed those combo discs did absolutely nothing to help sell them. I believe Warners eventually abandoned it, so they must have also come to the conclusion that it didn’t work.

I think it’s a dumb move on Disney’s part becuase they overprice their movies to begin with. So I respectfully disagree rr333, I think if the format is going to last it needs to do the exact opposite and stop selling dvd’s in combination.

It’s not as if your dvd’s stop working when you buy a blu-ray player. You should think of blu-ray as augmenting your collection, not replacing it.

  4. “GIMMEALLYOUGOT! GIMMEALLYOUGOT!”

    “They dumped AAAAAAWWWWWWLLLL OUR SURVEILLANCE???????”

    “ADIOS, MOTHERFUCKER!”

“YOU CAN GET KILLED WALKIN YOUR DOGGY!”

    “This crew… is GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.”

“You do not. Get to watch. MY. FUCKING TELEVISION! I never cheated on you, bitch.” (OWNED.)

“I HAD TO GET IT ON, MAN” — WaingrOWNAGE.

“WHO? WHO? What are you, A FUCKIN’ OWL?”

    GREATEST FUCKING MOVIE EVER.

    WAINGRO 4 LIFE.

“The bank is worth the risk.”

  5. I love Heat and I love most of that scene but I remember laughing out loud in the theatre at the the “I may be stoned on grass and prozac, but you’ve been walking through our life dead…” line. Ach.

  6. I agree with JeffK; I was struck by how off that Public Enemies trailer was. Even though there were a lot of problems with Untouchables (starting with Connery’s accent), the look seemed about perfect. Mann’s film looks wrong both in look and style.

A few year’s back Jeff Wells alluded to a cut of Heat that lasts 15 minutes longer, and pointed out how much he’d like to see the thing. I hope they consider putting some of that footage on the transfer; maybe as and alternate option.

I’ve always loved Heat; unlike most movies, this thing’s plot is totally a bell curve; it builds up slowly to an enormous climax halfway through the movie and then slowly draws it back down for the rest of the film. It’s awesome.

  7. Day 1 purchase on Blu-Ray for me! Let’s get Manhunter out there too. Hell, put out a box set of every Mann film and I’d buy it (ehh, maybe I’d leave Ali behind). Anyway :

-For me, the action IS the juice

    -Don’t waste my MUTHAFUCKIN’ TIME!

-Cos she’s got a GREAT ASS!!! And you got your head all the way UP IT!

    -Are you cool?

-Oh yeah man, you know I’m cool.

  8. There is no better movie about bank robbers out there. I started out loving this movie, then over the years started seeing its flaws, then slowly began to not mind those flaws. Now I firmly believe it has no flaws!

If they only put this out in a collector’s edition with a book and a fancy case for $100, I’d still buy it the day it came out. But really all I care about is that it have a transfer worthy of the film and sound to match.

  9. Someone also NEEDS to put L.A. TAKEDOWN on DVD; You can find a lot of clips on YouTube (or used to be able to, no idea if they’re still on) and it’s striking how it’s pretty much the exact same movie, down to the midday bank robbery, but with more of Mann’s Miami Vice/Band of the Hand/Crime Story era look and feel.

Xander Berkeley as Waingro would be worth twenty bucks for the DVD right there.

Also, THE KEEP is TOTAL OWNAGE and needs a DVD release.

    “OKAY, MOTHERFUCKER!”

“I am… OVER-FUICKIN’-WHELMED. What do you want for that, a JUNIOR G-MAN BADGE?”

    “Whatdowegot? WHATDOWEGOT?”

    “M.O…. is that they’re GOOOOOOOOOD.”

“I SAY WHAT I MEAN, AND I DO WHAT I SAY.”

    VINCENT HANNA = AWESOME.

  10. Yeah, Public Enemies looks like crap. The smeared motion, the blown highlights … not only does it not fit the period feel, it wouldn’t be a good fit for any A-list production, really. It just looks amateurish. There are plenty of digitally shot movies that look a lot better.

If Mann is dead set on doing digital cinematography, fine. But he still could have gotten far far better results than he did. The way it looks comes across as sloppy, cheap, and careless.

  11. Couldn’t agree more with stq. Mann needs to get back to shooting film – and bring Dante Spinotti back in the process.
