Saints Protect Him
It’s obvious within seconds of looking at clips from Little Ashes (Regent, 5.8.09), a drama about the young Salvador Dali, that it’s going to be received as a major embarassment. Particularly for Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who plays Dali. And I’m not gloating about this at all.
I’m not trying to be an obnoxious know-it-all here, but Pattinson looks flat-out silly in that upturned wax-stache. (Not in the poster portrait, which someone has Photoshopped so as to trim the upturned tips.) Look at the footage and there’s no accepting it. It looks like a cheap paste-on — a joke, a mistake.
If I’d been hired to replace director Paul Morrison the first thing I would have said when I walked on the set was, “Look, we all know that Dali is famous for the big wiry upturned moustache, but we can’t go with it because because it makes Robert look foolish. So as far as we’re concerned Dali’s upturned ‘stache didn’t kick in until he got older. Which there is ample photographic evidence to support. When he was younger he wore a Clark Gable ‘stache. End of discussion.”

(l.) Salvador Dali in his 20s, (r.) in his late 20s or early 30s. No upturned stache in either shot.
Robert Goulet called. He wants with ‘stache back.
Dear God. It looks like something out of an SNL sketch.
Middle-aged white guys playing Asians on “The Monkees” looked more legit.
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Even Rollie Fingers is laughing at the top photo.
Yep, looks like something out of an SNL skit….”silly” doesn’t even do it, he looks ridiculous. And although I can’t come up with a good idea right off the top of my head as to who would be an ideal choice to play the young Dali, I can’t believe someone came up with “that kid from ‘Twilight’”, and that this idea was actually approved. What, they couldn’t get Zac Efron?
Never seen this guy in anything aside from Harry Potter, but his douchiness at the Oscars makes me enjoy this a little bit.
[Deleted for coarseness and vulgarity.]
Hey LexG — HERE’S an action movie I will be paying full price for:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118001755.html?categoryid=13&cs=1
BOW before UNSTOPPABLE! BOW!
You’re not Bowing!!!!
Yeah, ever since the trailer came out last year I’ve been laughing at that ‘stache — plus he’s got a gay nude scene, I believe.
The dominant cliche of internet talkback is that people are always trashing actors in a snarly way. Anything they can think of that’s coarse and ugly, etc. And everyone knows about this cliche. Wouldn’t it be a bit more original or less predictable to avoid posting comments about Robert Pattinson being a “smelly douche” and that sort of thing? I’d prefer that a slightly higher level of discourse happen on this site. In fact, I’m going to delete that comment.
Who’s Dali?
The first still has a very early 70s, dregs of the British film industry quality to it. I don’t know if that has to do with the reproduction of the still, the quality of the film the movie was shot on, or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me. But either way, I have to say that Pattison has a wonderful face for film, ‘stache or no stache. Never seen his work, but I can see why the girlies are creaming their jeans over him.
And this is totally tangential, but type in this link: mstrmnd.com/log/802 and read what has to be one of the most mind-blowing pieces of film crit/scholarship/beats-the-fuck-out-of-me ever on The Shining. I’m serious. This is not a trick. It’s really quite astonishing.
I dont particularly like Pattinson, but it does annoy me how quickly people are dissmissing the film without really knowing much about it (not saying you’re one of them Wells). Pattinson filmed this BEFORE twilight and was attached to this project for about two years beforehand. I know this because i’ve been following this project since the script was greenlit almost 10 years ago. The script won the Euroscript Screen Story competition in 2000 and its the only script about Dali so far that has approval from the Dali foundation who are annoyingly picky about movie projects about Dali. The Al Pacino and Banderas projects dont have that yet and have been threatened with a lawsuit if they go ahead without approval.
In any case, the movie is primarily about poet/playwriter Federico Garcia Lorca. Dali and Luis Bunel are supporting characters and that mustache doesnt appear until near the end of the film so i very much doubt that it would be a deterent. It focuses on Dali’s younger days at university and looks at the events which lead him to become the caricature that he eventually does. Check out other preview clips:

The movie-fanatic has a great site dedicated to the project which has professional writers discussing the history behind these figures. It has some brilliant articles about Lorca and Dali.
http://www.themovie-fanatic.com/la/
Can i also just say that the actor playing Luis Bunuel is someone to keep your eyes on. Mathew McNulty was incredible in Control and has just completed a movie with Ken Loach. And we all know what working with Loach did for Cilian Murphy’s career!
Hopefully this will kill off the supersonic soundwave tweeners make when he appears. I could hear them screaming during his scenes in Twilight inside of the showing for Quantum of Solace.
“coarseness and vulgarity?” you gotta be kidding me.
I think an equally big/annoying problem is the whole accent. Is that some weird british/spanish hybrid? Are the two characters in the scene supposed to be Spanish? Because if they are, and the producers decided to make this an English language movie, don’t insult us by having the actors speak English in a Spanish accent. God that’s annoying. (Perhaps in this scene it’s supposed to be Dali speaking in English to someone who understands English… in this case it’s merely the bad accent that annoys, not the whole concept).
I think that the nude gay love scene may actually attract some of his young female audience. However, it will only cement his status as an actor with a very limited fan base. Still, I recall Leonardo di Caprio did a lousy film about the poet Arthur Rimbaud called Total Eclipse and survived the shame. Not suggesting that this guy will follow in Leo’s footsteps but a “dreamboat” actor can grow into adult roles given time.
Speaking of Dali, I still need to watch Destino one of these days.
The most annoying thing about his accent is that he has no idea what he is doing with it. It’s all over the map, seemingly on both sides of the Atlantic within a single sentence.
Pattinson is a haircut and little more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41OixAKZQWQ
To be fair, Jeffrey, even Salvador Dali himself looked silly with an upside-down moustache. I met him once and he stank of camphor and russian cigarettes.
I think the the accent was deliberately all over the place. Dali went to Paris with Bunuel for a while where they made the surrealist masterpiece ‘Un Chien Andalou’ and after he came back, he completely changed. Dali was well known for his outrageousness and began experimenting with accents after he came back to Spain. Its also well-known that he had a huge ego and from what i’ve heard, the movie is deliberately trying to show how pretentious he eventually became compared to Lorca.
If early word is anything to go by, I very much doubt its going to be an embarassment for anyone. Check out the official review from raindance which was very positive.
http://www.raindance.co.uk/site/index.php?aid=2493
The advocate also gave a very eloquent write-up about the movie. http://www.advocate.com/issue_story_ektid71763.asp
Don’t see what all the worry is about. Trailer is decent. Pretty people in exotic locations. Just watched Twilight last night for the first time. Patterson has a nice presence. I’ll reserve judgement as Dali would be an enormous challenge for anyone. A young Robert Downey Jr would be interesting … and how sad is it that young Downey comes to mind. Time gets on moving …
This is a picture that should never have been made. And certainly not in English.
Those confused by the fact that Wells is sticking up for Pattinson are missing a salient point: Pattinson’s exemplary non-fatness.
What do you mean this is a film that never should have been made? Yes, it’s in English, as the director is British. And yes, there is a fine line between embarrassment and stepping out to do a difficult performance. I’ve heard nothing but praise about Pattinson’s Dali, even if there are conflicting reports about why his accent is inconsistent. As long as it’s not too distracting, I can deal with that if the performance is great.
I’ve read that the script is really good, and the film is colorful, and beautiful. I don’t know how many films have been made about poet Federica Lorca, or Dali for that matter, but the story of 3 artist at university in 1920′s Spain before the revolution sounds very interesting to me.
As for the “stache”, it was Dali’s trademark once he became a caricature of his former self.
I think Pattinson’s scenes with Baltran are intriguing. And he made this film when he was 21 years old, way before auditioning for Twilight. I’ve heard that some of his scenes are very (intentionally) funny, and exhibit a deft touch with comedy. I’m looking forward to this.
From the comments I have read from people who have actually seen the movie, Robert Pattinson is excellent in this. And Dali wore an upturned mustache, so at least they respected the truth. Pattinson is far more than just a haircut, he will prove it. Some just don’t like it when young new actors take away from some more established names, well get used to his name, because he has a long career ahead of him.
I really dislike it when “journalists” or bloggers publish a piece with NO research and facts. Like this one.
You’re saying this whole film is going to be an embarrassment based on a CLIP and based on a MUSTACHE? Wow…really thought provoking.
As you can see in the Little Ashes poster you posted here, the “younger” Dali that Rob plays has the “Clark Gable” stache, and when Dali gets older in the film, they don Pattinson with the older Dali stache.
With the exception of the aged difference, I see a strong similarity here:
http://www.usmagazine.com/images/slideshows/dali.jpg
As another comment here said, the mustache accentuated the caricature that Dali made himself to be. If you see the film first, maybe you’ll understand.
OR if you read up on these historical figures…that would help too.
The upturned moustache scenes are from 1936, and are accurate. Dali’s own was achieved with hair extensions, and looked just as fake and bizarre. And yes, Dali was infamous for pretentiously playing with his accent in all languages he spoke.
Little Ashes was the ONLY Dali film approved by the Dali Foundation as the other films have totally inaccurate scripts.
Little Ashes is the only one that comes close to being any way true so Jeffery Wells needs to shut up and stop embarrassing himself.
Perhaps the mustache was a little different but who gives a shit? its still close enough.
I don’t think Rob looks silly as Dali at all, he looked MUCH more embarrasing in Twilight with make-up, lipstick and the buffant hair
And yes, Dali lived in France for years didn’t he?
He constantly played with accents, and a lot of reivews have said that Rob included that in his performance.
Well done Rob!
Jeffrey, I think you’re missing the point. Yes, Pattinson does look ridiculous in that waxed, upturned ‘stache. He’s supposed to. DALI looked ridiculous in that same ‘stache.
Now, I haven’t seen the film, so I can’t comment on whether Pattinson is any good in it, but from what I’ve seen (and I’ve been following it for awhile), it looks like he has the part nailed. You seem to have missed the other clips from the movie, which show Dali in all of his other different personas: a young, ridiculously awkward and shy student at his first day of college, a more confident artist, and yes, the insanely-manner caricature he later became.
As for the accents? I’m not Spanish, so I can’t comment on that. I do know, however, that Dali came back from Paris a changed man and played with all types of accents from that point forward.
I will say that a friend of mine said that the accents were laughably bad in one clip. I asked him, “whose accents?” “All of them…Dali, Lorca, the girl (Gala), awful.” It made me laugh because both Lorca and Gala are played by native Spaniards. The only Brits in the cast are Pattinson and McNulty. Sometimes I think it’s obvious that preconceived notions and perception clouds our view.
It’s sad that people aren’t even doing their homework before commenting. I have been hearing nothing but praise for this film from people who have seen ii in London and Belfast, and Pattinson is noted to give a brave, powerful performance. He and Baltran are supposed to have amazing chemistry together. He made this when he was only 21, before he had even heard of Twilight. The moustache is accurate, as are the accents. The director has said that he had Rob intentionally use different ones, as Dali himself did after living in different places. It’s really sad that so many are ready to prejudge Robert because he is very handsome and is getting a lot of media attention. He has talent, charisma and a powerful screen presence, and has excellent comic timing as evidenced by scenes in this and some of his other roles. He is not just another pretty face. And many adults like him , he is not just a “teen idol.” I am looking forward to seeing what looks to be a beautiful film.
What I find most disturbing is the assertion the film never should have been made. The film focuses on LORCA, not Dali. Those who know literary history will recall that it was on account of his split with Dali that the poet/playwright travelled to NYC where he was inspired by the Harlem Renaissance to become a true revolutionary of the theatre, staging increasingly controversial, feminist-themed plays with the goal of preparing the audience, opening their minds, so that eventually he’d be able to stage his impossible, blatantly and frankly gay-themed plays like The Public, The Destruction of Sodom, Black Ball, Blood Has No Voice, etc. It was because of his controversy as a playwright, and as a semi-out gay man, that he was brutally murdered by fascists as virtually the first shot of the Spanish Civil War.
This film represents the reclaiming and telling of an important moment in gay history, and whatever you think of Pattinson is trivial compared to that.
Jeffrey, you are welcome to your opinions, but please do some actual research on your subject matter beforehand. You are just simply, wrong.
I was at a very exclusive screening of this movie last night with 100 of my very best friends and we all agreed that it was the worst movie that we had ever seen.
“A very exclusive screening” of Little Ashes last night, George?
Let me guess, you were with “unidentified sources” and you can’t say how and where you saw the film.
You also cannot give any reasons behind it being the “worst movie you’ve ever seen” right? It just…was…Right?
Yeah, your comment fits very well with the author of this blog.
Yeah George: an “exclusive” screening lol
If you hated the film that much then i can only assume you are a homophobe or know nothing about Dali. Coz the reviews have been 99% positive, from professionals, men, women, rob fans, non rob fans. Everyone! lol
Um, I don’t think it was screened anywhere last night, George.
To be fair, it was on a cruise ship in international waters, so most of us were drunk and/or high. The unintentionally funny dialogue had most of us screaming with laughter, begging for relief. By the end, most of us had walked out and were puking on the deck. What a crappy film.
Ahhh, of course! A film that hasn’t been released ANYWHERE yet, and is still only showing at certain film festivals, would OF COURSE be playing on a cruise ship!
[insert sarcasm here]
I can see you were too high and drunk to realize you weren’t watching THIS film that is being discussed, Little Ashes.
Try to watch out for libel, George…
Riiiight.
Who says it was unintentional?
Dali was supposed to be hilariously outrageous.
George, get a life! Go back to your drugs lol coz we don’t want your stupid opinons here. You clearly know nothing about Dali and have no taste in biopic films so do us all a favour and get lost.
George, really, WTF
actually, prager is telling the truth. it’s actually an amazing cruise workshop called “The Artist: On Canvas and Onscreen.” you watch the movie then everyone paints in that style and the proceeds go to charity. Tonight, Pollock.
anyone interested, here’s the website:
http://www.wakeupitscalledsarcasm.org
Wait, Victor – are you the same guy who’s been writing the series of articles on Lorca on the promotional blitz site? If so, you’re series is absolutely wonderful. Made me want to go out and buy Ian Gibson’s biopic on Lorca and Dali only to be told its out of print! Love your work though.
Like I said, Ryan, [insert sarcasm here].
And also, as I said, Prager’s comments go hand in hand with this blog article. Uninformed and just pathetic.
i’m just trying to figure out who you people are.
Yes well, we’re still trying to figure out what would make a blogger, out of nowhere, decide to write about the mustache used in this independent film, Little Ashes, and say…based on that mustache…that the movie is therefore and “embarrassment.”
Don’t bloggers / wanna-be-journalists like to do research and learn the facts before publishing their work, in the hopes of gaining credibility? Obviously not.
EDIT of previous comment:

After my fifth martini passed out halfway through, the film was so bad. The sight of Pattison’s ridiculous stache made my comely companion puke on my shoes. Then the love scene commenced and someone in the audience said “I think I’m going to be sick!” and he did. It became an orgy of puke and spit and vomiting and then someone set fire to the screen and this caused an explosion and the ship began to sink and we had to be rescued by the Coast Guard. All because of this fucking shitty movie!!!!!!!
lmao Eh no George, it was because of the alcohol and drugs.
You haven’t given any real reasons for hating the movie so we can assume you are lying and haven’t seen it. And you haven’t responded to anyone’s replys to you either. You are just making random false comments.
Why can’t you just admit that you haven’t seen the movie and that you don’t even know anything about Dali in the first place lol .
Well here’s a response from someone who did see Little Ashes – ME. I’m annoyed that I’ve had to log on to post here as I’m getting fed up of seeing uncalled for criticism of Rob. It feels like a witch hunt lately. Anyway I saw the film at Raindance in London a few months ago. I knew very little about Dali but went along as I admire Rob Pattinson as an actor. I was nervous for him and expecting to come away with a list of criticisms as I am very hard to please but I was thrilled with the film and Rob’s performance. It only took me moments to settle back and enjoy the film without worrying if he’d be able to pull it of. I can tell you know that he excels in this role. Its his finest performance and a very brave one. Fans will be extremely proud of him. My advice is to forget about the sad geeky guys who post on these sites (the sort who are glued to their chairs with empty meal boxes around them) as they are jealous of his looks and talent and just support him in the best way – go and see the film and all of Rob films for that matter.
Javier Beltran also gives a wonderful performance and has the larger role but Rob has the most difficult role and handles it beautifully. I adored the costumes and the cinematography and indeed the music. Infact I cant complain at all which isnt normal for me as I’m a picky devil. Dont worry about the moustache – its fine – and he doesnt even have it for the first half of the film. The film ha a very small budget but you’d never guess. The production team should be congratulated. So just one final point for fans of Rob – go out and support his work. Thats what really counts.
LOL! That was pretty funny, George.
Especially the part where the Coast Guard rescued you in international waters. How, er…generous of them. You should re-hyrdrate today.
Ryan, it’s just fans responding to Wells assertion that this film will be an embarrassment because of Pattinson’s Dali ‘stache. I’d hoped that this film would be taken a little more seriously on Wells’ film blog.
To Wells: Thanks for your input, and concern. LOL. But in the future, please look deeper into the film’s content and clips, rather than just comment on Dali’s mustache. .
“My advice is to forget about the sad geeky guys who post on these sites (the sort who are glued to their chairs with empty meal boxes around them) as they are jealous of his looks and talent and just support him in the best way – go and see the film and all of Rob films for that matter.” – Josephine
Very good point. I’ve done a bad thing and looked through some of the other blogs on here and though it’s giving this place more hits, I observed A LOT about the author and the commentators here. They are here daily. They are exactly as you described them.
It’s been fun proving that they know nothing about the film, nor about the history here. I think we should allow them their fun now of mocking and playing with themselves and one another.
Yeah, Liz, that’s me. Thanks for the compliment, and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my articles.
josephine thanks so much for your input.
I was a bit worried about Robs acting coz i saw mistakes in Twilight but i’m glad he’s better in Little Ashes.
George Steiner was sitting behind me eating a Charleston Chew when Pattinson came on screen and he nearly choked to death. I gave him the Heimlich maneuver and he was okay after that. When we landed back in Manhattan he asked me what I thought. I said that it was the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE of movies about painters. He agreed. Then I heard a loud guffaw. It was Leonard Maltin, who slapped me on the back. Lenny said that he thought he was watching a Little Rascals short, the film was so amatuerish and stupid, except the movie was so fucking loooooonnnnng.
George at this point NO-ONE believes you, your story is just so far-fetched and stupid. You clearly haven’t actually seen the film. Making up people’s names does not make your story true.
I suggest you watch the film without drugs lol
I was just talking to an exec at Regent. He confided to me that they had a meeting last night and it didn’t go well. People were wondering aloud why they agreed to release this turkey. They’re trying to get out of it. So, this May 8 release date might be pushed back. It might not come out at all. It might go straight to DVD after they sell the cable rights to Starz.
LOL are you fucking kidding me George, Regent LOVE this movie, it has has received marvelous reviews at all the film festivals.
Where are you getting this crap from?
They’re thinking of doing re-shoots, and they got some unused Dude, Where’s My Car footage that they might use as well. They’re going to go with this sub-plot where Dali is really a space alien. I said that you can’t shine shit, but they’re trying to salvage the thing, put it into some kind of releasable shape. Morrison is pissed, naturally, so it might become one of those directed by Alan Smithee things.
Babes, he’s yanking your chain, sweetie. lol
LOL yeah Marsha I think Geroge needs to take some valium
The other solution is to cut Pattinson out of the movie and reshoot with someone else. Their first choice is Hayden Christiansen, and if that doesn’t work out, they’re going with Jonathan Lipnicki. Pattinson won’t object too much, he knows that he’s through and is gearing up for either a “Dancing with the Stars” or a “Celebrity Apprentice” gig and then a recurring role on “Fringe” starting next fall.
I don’t appreciate George’s lies about the movie. We need some honest criticism not snarky crap. I saw it at a screening and it didn’t really bother me. Pattinson wasn’t that bad. He can’t act but he has some presence. Anyway, I went home that day and I started to feel really terrible. I went to the doctor and he said I had full blown AIDS. He said I got it from the movie. I think it’s important for people to know that the movie is giving people AIDS. No one wants to talk about it, but it’s irresponsible to suppress this information.
lol Rothchild and George sound like the same person…mmm…
idiots.
Rob CAN act, anyone who’s seen ONE interview knows that he completely changes for his roles and becomes the character in his mind.
Let’s see, we have a ridiculous idiot (George) and an homophobe (Rothchild). This is becoming E! and not a film site for serious discussions.
I haven’t seen any evidence this was EVER a ‘film site for serious discussions’, Marnye. All Georgia and Rothchild are doing are proving me (and us) right in that.
The other problem with the film (besides the bad acting, pedestrian script, hack director, etc.) is all the the shaky camera shit. That’s the other reason so many people were puking and passing out at the screening. It was like that monster movie Cloverfield. Really annoying. And the guy playing Lorca had this pimple on his nose. Couldn’t the makeup department cover that shit up? And there was at least two scenes where you could see the boom microphone come down into the frame. Embarrassing. Ed Wood would’ve been proud. And why all the heavy metal music? It’s set in the 20s and it had all these songs by Motorhead and Cinderella. What’s up with that?
And people wonder why sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Nice one, dude.
I hate to be driven to state the obvious, but Dali looked incredibly silly with that moustache. Therefore, if Pattinson can manage to look silly despite being so-sexy-it-ought-to-be-illegal, then I’d say he’s a damned good actor. Release the film! (Or alternatively, release the hounds on Georgie Porgie and Rothchildish.)Either way works for me.
If you think the pictures of Dali are ridiculous, you should seriously check out some of the footage of him on youtube. He was an absolutel nutcase! Gala included, who was already a well-known nymphomaniac before she met the supposed ‘asexual’ Dali.

I hope both happens, etoile.
Marnye, I’m not sure how the hell you thought my comment was homophobic. I didn’t say anything about the gays. You have some serious problems.
Do you know more straight people have AIDS than gays? If you want a serious discussion, that’s a good place to start.
Shameful.
Okay people, we give up! We won’t make jokes at the expense of The Pattinson. Apparently he’s one of those off-limits things like the Holocaust that can’t be joked about.
I hear he’s a lousy lay.
78 comments on an upside down mustache.
Jesus who are you Pattinson fans that come out of the woodwork? This is so terrifying to me. Now I understand how my Grandfather could have been so scared of Obama supporters. Get a fucking life.
Wow J Wells, how ignorant about Dali can you be, seriously read a book.
Love it. A bunch of fans of a teenybopper flash in the pan come here to defend their teen idol and then bitch because this isn’t a site for “serious” film discussion. Seriously, if Johnny Depp-lite is doing anything but WB shows in three years, I’ll be surprised. Go back to the Twilight fan boards.
Seriously, I’m not a huge fan of Twilight, so I don’t frequent their boards. Seriously, I’m not a teenybopper…far from it. Seriously, I’ve seen a few roles Pattinson has played besides Cedric and Edward. He’s a talented, interesting, well-spoken young actor.
Wells posted his thoughts about Pattinson donning a humorous ‘stache, worrying that said ‘stache may become an embarrassment for him. Why is it surprising that fans would respond? Nothing wrong with educating Wells about the film, since we have been waiting for this film for about a year, and know a bit more about it. With the exception of one fan, the responses have been from mature film fans who do have lives, thank you very much. Pattinson will be much more than a Johnny Depp-light in 3 years, trust me. Very excited, though, to see what the future holds for this bright, young star.
Thanks guys! It’s been…interesting.
Of more interest than whether teeny bopper fans don’t like the mustache (still can believe that’s the subject of this article) is what the teeny boppers make of him playing a gay character. Got to say I’ve been surprised at some of the comments on little ashes clips on youtube along the lines of “Nooo he can’t play a gay..”
So its going to be interesting how many teeny boppers lose interested when they see him kissing another man, If I were Robert Pattinson I’d hope to lose most of them, its not the audience you want for a sustainable career. By the way Beltran looks to have done an impressive job as Lorca.
Favorite line: “Try to watch out for libel, George…”
“So its going to be interesting how many teeny boppers lose interested when they see him kissing another man”
Thats nothing. You should see how broken-hearted some of them these teens got when Pattinson announced he hates children. Now THAT was hilarious. They were crushed!

Awesome concept. I know a buddy of mine makes use of templates. This stuff is great for if you append rows to a grid or list.
Also, it would probably be great for having some sort of “viewer”. You could have a list of documents, and use jQuery to get JSON data, then put the data into the template. Something like viewing invoices or other formatted docs.
Just to be picky too, according to w3schools.com, the “value” tag is deprecated? But I guess it is still technically valid. I like to be “valid” when I can
