Slap Against Penn
“I think you should call out Sean Penn and his reps for their blatant lie in the New York Post over how he didn’t demand to be cut out of Crossing Over and some shit about the role being ‘experimental.’
“All lies, all cover-up. Penn demanded that Harvey cut him out of the film because he had issues with the honor-killing storyline (which , in the film, isn’t even an honor killing). It should also be mentioned that once he was out Penn refused to refund the $1 million fee for five days work and [that] Weinstein forced director Wayne Kramer and producer Frank Marshall to pay $50 grand for half the cost of a reshoot day.
“I hate the idea that Penn’s behavior is being whitewashed by his reps. Even Harvey is pissed off that Penn put him in the position of having to choose between leaving him in the film or ending their professional relationship. By cutting Penn out, Harvey created the perception that Crossing Over was damaged goods (along with Harvey’s other butchering of scenes) since almost every critic has mentioned Penn’s involvement at one point in their opening review. Some have even drawn conclusions that Penn wanted out of the film because it allegedly sucked so bad.
“Make no mistake — Penn’s role in the film was important, and the film lost a lot of depth and emotional resonance (and a more spiritual ending) by cutting Penn out — not to mention a beautiful Alice Braga performance and the entire backstory to her character.
“Harvey Weinstein should be pressured into reinstating the Penn storyline in the DVD release. Clearly, there has been no controversy over the supposed ‘honor killing’ storyline, so there will be no heat on Weinstein if he does so. No one seems to care about it. What matters now is that on its own terms, as Peter Travers in Rolling Stone has said, ‘the scene, as it now stands, condemns a misguided individual, not an entire culture.’
“Penn knew exactly which Crossing Over script he was signing on for. The truth is that he suddenly ‘found religion’ when he got lobbied by the National Iranian American Council, an Iranian image watchdog group, and decided he didn’t want to contribute to the negative image Americans have of Iran.
“Maybe Penn should donate the million bucks he pocketed from Crossing Over to Amnesty International and help stop the actual honor killings that do take place in Iran, as well as executions (many of them stonings) and other human rights violations taking place on a daily basis.”
Jeff – out of curiosity, would you care to attribute that lengthy quote? Your New York Post link leads to a “Page Not Found” message, by the way.
Isn’t it amazing how Penn thinks we should have a positive view of Iran, but agrees with the world’s negative view of America? he should just move over there.
I’m looking forward to Penn pulling that on his next picture, “The Two Stooges.”
Yeah, agreed, not sure where this quote is coming from but…
1. “Penn knew exactly what `Crossing Over” script he was signing on for.” I’d hate to say, for sure, what ANYONE actually “knew” about anything at any time. But this was an ensemble, multi-plotted piece. Isn’t it at least possible that Penn signed on, at an early stage, for one story without realizing what the other parts of the movie were like? Or that things changed, from the time of his early commitment?
2. “…ending their professional relationship.” Do Weinstein and Penn really have one? I don’t have a filmography at hand, but Penn never struck me — like Paltrow, like Tarantino, like Affleck — as someone who was tied to W in any way. (Thank God.) Any “relationship,” I think, is in Weinstein’s dreams.
3. “Which, in the film, isn’t even an honor killing.” SPIOLER etc, but — I dunno. The young woman is having an affair. Her brother goes there, armed, to physically intimidate the couple. The two lovers end up dead. Seems to me the difference between that and an honor killing is the same as the difference between murder and manslaughter — something fit for lawyers to argue over. Is that who’s bitching here? Or just a cranky producer who doesn’t like actors?
I agree that Penn is a blunt, prickly and sometimes infuriating Irishman. Being the same, I suppose, I’ve truly enjoyed his company the few times we’ve met, done interviews, or attended functions together. And yes, I’m fully aware that he often goes off half-cocked, and loaded for bear — and waving a red flag that people just love to take shots at..
But at least when Penn does it, he does it full-out, with his name attached, and the consequences be damned. Unlike this person’s craven attack.
My “favorite” (most horrific) story of such things (honor killing) from that part of the world last year was the one where the 13 year old Somalian girl Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was abducted & raped on her way to visit her grandmother. She went to report it, they instead accused her of adultery.
She was taken to a stadium, buried up to her neck (she struggled, crying out “Don’t kill me, don’t kill me!”) and then stoned to death.
To paraphrase a film villian: “That’s the problem with you Americans, always invading the wrong countries…”
Penn is a complete douche for this definitely. I mean look at the recent thing with the TV producer couple who had that Muslim TV channel whose mission was to improve the image of Islam in America, the husband beheaded his wife! This kind of thing does happen to this day and is accepted in certain Muslim communities.
Penn is a complete douche. End of.
I can’t say who it is — that was the deal. But the guy is 100% legit-genuine.
I’m even more shocked that this movie only made 287k with Jeff’s plastered ads all over the front page of HE.
There’s no way any studio would cut Sean Penn completely out of a movie as a “creative” decision. So this is obviously a weird, complicated story, and the writer of the above is one of the (justifiably) irate filmmakers.
It’s guys like this that make us liberals look bad.

Wasn’t SHE’S SO LOVELY a Miramax release?
Box Office Mojo has the film at $361,724 domestic – and I’m amazed it’s even made that amount. The film hasn’t gone wider than 38 theaters! It’s opening weekend (in nine theaters) had a pretty solid screen average of $8,597 (again, per Box Office Mojo). Despite poor reviews, Weinstein could have opened wide on the first weekend and made some good coin on Harrison Ford’s name. Too bad they forgot to market and release the film in the process. I guess this is what happens when you have bad blood between filmmaker and producers and a distributor that has no cash left to even release his slate. Sean Penn is definitely a major douche for pulling that on Kramer and co. And Weinstein is the even bigger douche for acquiescing to a star’s demands after the role has been shot. Memo to Penn: the time to pull out of a movie is before you’ve shot the role, not afterwards. Had Weinstein blown Penn off, he would have had Penn’s first role out of the gate after his MILK Oscar win – how fucking dumb can you be?
Penn directed THE CROSSING GUARD for Weinstein and had major post-production battles with him on that one.
I was invited to the one screening of the real cut of this movie, but I couldn’t go because of other commitments, now it looks like I will never see it.
Oh well, another film to add to that list of unavailable films that I really wanna see.
HE’s first blind item. What fun! So if this is Sweet Smell of Success, did Mr. Anonymous first get rejected by Poland and his horse-betting wife. Did Jeffrey at least put up a fight prior to caving for access to cigarette girl? And who in the hollywood blogosphere is Hunsecker?

Bad Lieutenant: Mall Cop
Sean Penn moving to Iran is the best idea I’ve heard in a while now. Genius. Is it any wonder this guy’s a POS scumbag? First he talks about politics without understanding anything about it but mouths off cause, you know, he’s a fuckin’ actor, so his dumb opinion counts. Now he is becoming the D-Bag he;s always been. Taking a mil and NOT giving it back? That’s BS. Total POS move.
Best Penn moment in history: Going into see MYSTIC RIVER (back when he mattered) and as I was walking into the cinema, a large group of seniors were looking at the poster outside the theater and they were talking and one of them said “if I’d known Sean Penn was in it, I wouldn’t have bought a tix for it.” They all went to get refunds before th show started.
Yeah, D-bag, you got owned by a bunch of 70+ers. Scum.
Some “seniors” got refunds for a movie and somehow they “own” Sean Penn? That’s a really pathetic anecdote, JT. After a steady diet of Bill O’Reilly, my father decided that he too hated Sean Penn, but he still sat through Milk. Most people are made of stronger stuff than those “seniors” you celebrate.
Wasn’t SHE’S SO LOVELY a Miramax release?
Actually, I have a different version of this question.
Wasn’t SHE’S SO LOVELY possibly the worst movie made in the past 20 years?
MILK was crap. Th doc it ripped off was better by light years. Oh, so Penn’s not a POS? Ask hi wife what she thinks about him fucking that boy Natalie Portman! Yeah, classy guy. Lots to respect there. POS for life.
JT, did Sean piss in your cornflakes this morning, or something?
“Ask hi wife what she thinks about him fucking that boy Natalie Portman! ”
And that is classy? JT is over.
If only Sean Penn were edited out of ‘I Am Sam’.
JT
You’ve officially surpassed DZ as the biggest idiot on the block. Congrats.
Holy shit, some 70 year old geezers didn’t want to see him in a movie? People of that age fondly remember a time when blacks were hung from trees and gays stayed in the closet. I could give a fuck what most people over 70 think.
What gives you the right to spout off about politics? What’s your profession? When was Penn wrong about something? When he bashed GWB? When he doubted the reasoning behind the war?
Yeah, he was way the fuck off on those.
What I cant understand is, how does Penn keep the million bucks when he asked to be cut out of the film.
It’s very AIG-like to ask to be removed from a film and keep the money.
I would be a 1000% proponent to include the Penn footage in the dvd, especially when the guy takes a million bucks for nothing.
What does Penn know about abuses of power? Well, he IS a wife beater. Didn’t he beat the crap out of Madonna back in the day, or am I delusional?
Delusional. Unless we are to believe the National Enquirer
hunterd, that’s the dumbest thing anyone has said on here in awhile.
Jonah….nice try but you don’t mention the fact that he cheats on his wife, going out and pawing sluts half his age while married. wonder how his children feel about that. A man who does that is scum. and I don’t spout off about politics anywhere. the man is scum because he cheats on his wife. Call me old fashioned, but the jerk is a jerk. next time, get some morals before you rant against someone for calling out an adulterer. I feel sorry for his wife and children, especially. they deserve better than their dad mauling some young girl who is probably a few years older than them. gross and disgusting.
that natalie portman story is BULLSHIT. you actually believe one little blurb based on some guy that saw them close as he walked around a corner.
get a fucking life and use your head.
JT
Where’s the proof, bitch?
JT’s hissyfits over Sean Penn cheating on his wife would make a manicurist blush.
and JT, Natalie Portman is a boy? what does that make you, certainly not a man.
god I hate you. mostly because i suspect you pray before every meal.
“nice try but you don’t mention the fact that he cheats on his wife”
Actually, it was you who didn’t mention that; you had a whole post listing stuff about his politics and old people who don’t like him. You didn’t say anything about that. So it seems like you’re now trying to back off the political thing and hold it up as a moral reason that you don’t like Penn. It may be true, but it certainly comes off as disingenuous.
quote from JT: “and I don’t spout off about politics anywhere.”
Previous quote from JT: “Sean Penn moving to Iran is the best idea I’ve heard in a while now. Genius. Is it any wonder this guy’s a POS scumbag? First he talks about politics without understanding anything about it but mouths off cause, you know, he’s a fuckin’ actor, so his dumb opinion counts.”
I believe JT’s real name is Harvey Weinstein.
Hey Harv! Welcome to the blog!
I sympathise with Deathtongue’s horror at the murder of a young girl in Somalia but…the same part of the world? Iran and Somalia? Open your geography books. Different continents, races, cultures, even religions (well, branches of.) Whatever the specifics of Penn’s behaviour in this instance, his stance on Iran is worthy of some respect. Relations between the US and Iran have been contentious for decades, and America has a lot to answer for in that regard. Really. there’s more to this tale than hollywood insider talk.
“Whatever the specifics of Penn’s behaviour in this instance, his stance on Iran is worthy of some respect.”
I think it’s fair to say his reasoning is possibly legitimate (we certainly don’t know all of those details), but the behavior being most heavily criticized is the idea of forcing somebody to cut you out of a movie you agreed to be in without giving back the money they paid you to be in the movie.
Even if a handful of honor killings only take place in Iran every year, it’s still a problem. Penn’s appearance in the film could have led to debate about the issue on a worldwide basis. The film is after all fiction. But if you google Iran and honor killings, you get some pretty substantial hits and these killings are not all in the tribal areas – a recent one took place in Baghdad. Aside from honor killings, Iran still executes many women for promiscuity and infidelity by stonings. The stories of civil rights abuses coming out of Iran are legion and if you’re poor and can’t afford to bribe your way out of a situation, you will end up with your head in a noose.
In response to Swhitty’s comment about the nature of the crime in the film – honor killings are typically agreed to by the rest of the family. It is not the action of one misguided individual, but the consensus of a family. That is not the case in Crossing Over. The family – or the father and the sons – can at best be accused of thuggish behavior in their intent to humiliate the daughter, but no one was told to kill her – and you clearly see the old man grieving about it. I’m not condoning the family’s actions, but it was not a directive for murder and therefore not a real honor killing. Also, the reason the perp kills his sister is more due to a weird sexual jealousy than anything cultural or religious. You can see he’s clearly turned on and weirded out by seeing her in bed with another man. All in all, none of it justifies Penn demanding to be cut out of the film. What he should have done is publicly expressed his disappointment with the storyline a la Gary Oldman in The Contender and let the movie going public draw their own conclusions. It’s not as if he’d be defending the actions of a country that is known for its commitment to human rights. But again, it sounds like the ultimate decision maker was Harvey Weinstein and he took the pussy way out. Great precedent you’ve created for the industry, Harv. Who’s next?
Ryan: Why is NP a “boy?” No tits, no ass, no hops. Sorry, but I like a gal with a curvy, natural body, a sexy lady who doesn’t starve herself and has a beautiful figure. In other words, a WOMAN, not a little boy.
As for the guy who said I pray before meals. Sorry. Agnostic here. 100%.
Hard for folks to wrap their heads around that one: A non-believer who has morals.
Okay…I donno who I was thinking of. I could have SWORN charges were brought against Penn for spousal abuse at some point.
Wait, looks like I WAS right. Felony spousal abuse charges were filed against Sean Penn in 1988…never went to trial so, might have been trumped up, might have been kept quiet.
“But if you google Iran and honor killings, you get some pretty substantial hits and these killings are not all in the tribal areas – a recent one took place in Baghdad.”
I don’t know a whole lot about honor killings, but *something* is wrong with that sentence.
“Hard for folks to wrap their heads around that one: A non-believer who has morals.”
I think people are still hung up on the guy who calls women “boys’ if they don’t have big tits insulting other people for not being classy. Or, really, the fact that said guy looks down on *anybody*.
Gordon27: If Bergman can call them that, than so can I.
