What is Billy Bob Thornton's problem? What a sullen asshole. QTV host Jian Ghomeshi introduced him as an "Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor, and director" when doing an interview with Thornton and his band, The Boxmasters. Thornton took offense that he was being referred to (in his head) as some kind of musical hobbyist.

I agree. This seems way staged, if for no other reason than Thornton's responses. The Famous Monsters of Filmland answer made me laugh out loud, but even his first few "I don't know what you mean" answers are so removed from reality that this almost has to be a Spinal Tap type spoof. Ironically, the other guy in the band seems pretty right so he may be a better actor than Thornton. Could Billy Bob just be really wacked out on a pharmaceutical cocktail?

I'm with Deathtongue on this one.
I feel BBT is a usually fascinating actor and sometimes director (love Sling Blade, but given the anemic box office of his films, not sure he'll be making too many more), but that often comes with a price.
That price is BBT appears as though he is probably a miserable fuck to be around a fair portion (majority?) of the time.

I passed, b/c really when it comes right down to it, who gives a shit about their horrible music? From what I've heard, it has more to do with his miserable experience making 'All The Pretty Horses' and his ongoing feud with Weinstein which led to him not wanting to direct anymore (though there were talks a few years back about him directing again).

While the world was charmed by his faux hilly billy hokum, the guys is really nothing more than a sad, unhappy, bi polar misanthrope. Wath the guys in the band in this interview. They are shell shocked. Like kids who pretend everything is okay in an abusive alcoholic family. Abusive is the key emotion I remember from back in 1994. Seeing this makes the hair stand on the back of my neck. This guy has put out so much bad karma it's eventually going to catch up with him.

Just got back from the Willie Nelson concert and BB's band did a pretty terrific job. Billy Bob spoke to the crowd a bit and even indirectly talked about acting (he said "hi" to an actor he'd worked with in the crowd). In any case, he always been openly odd/eccentric. I interviewed Billy Bob at Telluride when "Sling Blade" (the feature) premiered there. I mentioned to the publicist that I'd seen the short, which I figured was incredibly good fortune, since probably no other journalist there had. I was warned in no uncertain terms that if I even alluded to Hickenlooper's short, Billy Bob would become violently angry, and I had to vow not to mention it. Of course, he was so completely ingratiating, in a new-best-friend kind of way, that, at the time, I wondered if it was the publicist who was a little nutty. But I always wondered what would've happened if I'd had the nerve. I guess George knows...

Funny, how he managed to accept the Best *Adapted* Screenplay, isn't it? And by funny, I mean comically hypocritical.
If I remember right, when 'Sling Blade' hit, there were stories all over where a lot of actors who were well known, prominent assholes who had either worked with him or studied acting with him along the way talked openly about how much of an asshole he was. I remember thinking, either he's really cool and calls out assholes and that's why they hate him, or, more likely (increasingly so), he's such an asshole that even assholes think, "What an asshole."

Actually, Billy Bob only drummed on one song. He was the singer for the rest of the set. And to be fair, he really was a musician back before he broke into acting or screenwriting. This is really ancient history for me and I harbor no bad feelings towards Billy Bob. I just don't think the record was ever really set straight. At the time, Thornton's people spun it in a way that made it sound like I was passed over by Billy Bob in directing the feature version. The reality is I walked away. I couldn't stomach his abusiveness. When the feature was a hit, I considered filing a law suit (without the success of the short the feature would never have been made), but Thornton was such a media darling that it would have been too damaging for me to pursue it. There is no question that this man is a great talent. He also has many warm, endearing qualities that are genuine. With that said, there is a dark side to him, an extremely dark side, that is cruel and irrational. This will be my last word on the subject. It always kind of amazed me that the Oscar he won for Best Adapted Screenplay was based on "a play" that never existed. "Pearls Before Swine" was a one man show in which Karl's monologue was only one of many characters Thornton played. The reality is the feature was based on the short which I had directed and which Billy Bob never wanted anyone to know about, nor know about my contribution. It always hurt me a great deal, considering the fact of how much I gave to launch this guy's career in film. Regardless, I liked the feature. Though had I directed it, I would have given Karl less of a Disney quality. In the short I think he's a much more interesting and compelling character. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth...

I actually remember the spin being much harsher towards you, to be honest, something along the lines of BBT feeling that you hadn't gotten it right or something to that effect.
Which always seemed bizarre, considering how closely the feature recreated the short.

First MilkMan, we never played the Ellen show (rejected). The song, Go My Way, is funk and not boogie so before you spout off on a blog about music and make such an ignorant statement I'd consult with Billy Bob about musical styles. Second, I mostly felt bad for those guys in the band who have to carry the weight of Mr. Thorton's pain around to interviews and then play music minus one. Billy Bob, that's cruel. Third, when we do interviews we always talk about movies, 6 degrees.org, footloose-it comes with the territory. We also talk about music and it usually turns into a satisfying balance. The interviewer handled this well, I'd do his show anytime. Mike Bacon

Wonder if he was pondering just ending the interview - even if it was live, saying good bye to the lads, good luck - and playing Tom Petty music the rest of the segment? I suppose he had to carry it on to the bitter end .. but imagine he was seething inside.
Jian was respectful to the entire band, and as pointed out already Boxmaster would not be there for any other reason than BBT's fame. That's the reality. And BBT couldn't bother his arse to bring some version of a drum kit? That's disrespectful to the host. I am shocked at both the behaviour of BBT in an on-air situation like that and how, apparently, he is so often like this and worse.

The upshot is that, after being booed last night when BBT called the interviewer "an asshole" from the stage, the Boxmasters are off the rest of the Willie Nelson tour, as of today (as confirmed on Willie's website).

Thanks for that update Chris - it made my day to see Mr. BBT get live feedback from the crowd telling him what everyone around the worldl thought of him and his behaviour as a guest on a radio show.

He's more than a sullen asshole. I've heard some things. Psychotic bipolar pothead is more like it.

The Bacon Bros. would be on third standby in case Keanu Reeves or Russell Crowe's Band couldnt make it (Personal shout out apology to Michael Bacon. The MilkMan made me do it).

nice post! Jian Ghomeshi is well known radio personality up here in Canada and they broadcast it visually as well. I think he handled it well considering her probably wanted to punch Thornton in the head as my as we did watching. thanks,,

great post! Watch the other members at the start, they are all withdrawn and hesitant. You really get the vibe that they could tell something was going to happen, that perhaps Thorton was already acting "off" in the green room so they knew it was going to be a bad gig."

very great post! I remember seeing profiles of him all the way back in the Sling Blade days that said as much. If he was good enough for Warren Zevon, he's good enough for me.
