Apologies to Washington Times writer Sonny Bunch for my not responding to an interview request last week to talk about film grain. A decent piece resulted. He wound up quoting Some Came Running‘s Glenn Kenny and the Criterion Collection’s Lee Kline. Kline blows smoke, however, by saying the choice is strictly between removing or not removing film grain. He knows full well that film grain can be reduced tastefully and respectfully with picture detail not being compromised in any significant way.
to make your readers truly informed, you must post some clips of Sunset Blvd. w/ grain vs. a clip w/ grain removed.
To remove the grain, you must artificially replace that area. There must be some point where the whole image becomes too polished.
frankly i think the times piece made welles sound foolish. he’s over extended here. he’s not a cinematographer/filmmaker and it shows. grain is not simply an unwanted byproduct of film shot way back when, rather it’s a an aesthetic element that cinematographers continue to use or don’t use. for example look at Inarritu’s films. he and rodrigo love grain. for them it’s an important aesthetic element which helps create a gritty look. also consider 25th hour. prierto again uses grain in that film, particularly in the intro flashback scene, to achieve a certain visual look. imagine if those films were cleaned up and stripped of grain. that would be outrageous. that said, there are cases where grain exists as a result of unintentional underexposure in which case i would totally understand if it was removed in the restoration but only with the filmmakers ok. you have to consider grain removal on a case by case basis.
I wouldn’t respond to a request for an interview with anybody from the Washington Times either…

When grain was there, we didn’t really remove it because it was part of the original film…. [Warner Bros.] tried to do some electronic noise reduction on the grain, which actually starts to calm things down. … You can do that, but you can’t push it too far…. (emphasis mine)
