Kevin McDonald's State of Play is a straightforward, right-down-the-middle, old-fashioned print newspaper story -- well-ordered and comprehensible. (More or less.) "Old fashioned," I mean, in the following of a well-trod path. It's a thriller about a dogged print reporter (Russell Crowe) getting to the bottom of a complex Washington scandal involving the usual killings, corruptions, strained alliances, infidelities, chase sequences, etc. Lord knows we've been down that road time and again.

The wrinkle this time is Crowe's shaggy-haired Washington Globe reporter pooling forces with a fellow employee who is also, in a sense, the enemy -- a bloggy-blog columnist (Rachel McAdams) who riffs about the social dirt in Washington, D.C., but who now needs to follow Crowe's shoe-leather methodology to open up a story that involves a U.S. Congressman (Ben Affleck) and the killings of persons tied to his background as well as ongoing investigations into a Halliburton-like corporation.

In a way, State of Play feels like a kind of farewell valentine to the traditions and disicplines that define serious journalism. McDonald is clearly lamenting their erosion, which is mainly due to competition and influence from the 24/7 digital-blog economy, which tends to favor shoot-from-the-hip analysis over in-depth investigations. And yet the film's undercurrent is telling us that the economic system that supports traditional reporting is weakening and perhaps losing its will.

I was reminded of the emotional currents in Jack Webb's -30-, a cornball newsroom drama made in 1959 . (And which is pretty much extinct itself, not being on VHS or DVD or, to my knowledge, broadcast TV.) Webb's sentimental depictions of the lives of reporters and copy boys and editors cranking out a daily edition are echoed after a fashion by State of Play's closing-credits montage. It shows a newspaper being printed with huge paper rolls and printing presses and delivered by huge ten-wheeler trucks -- all of these being phased out as we speak. Talk about your sad elegies.

Plus I loved that you can actually comprehend what's going on -- I was always trying to chase the revelations in my head and keep up with it, but it never got too far ahead of me. (Unlike with Tony Gilroy's Duplicity, which made me feel a little bit like a dumb-ass.)

I found the portrayal of the tension and rivalry between the online and print newspaper cultures via Crowe and McAdams' relationship to be satisfying and symmetrical and the right way to go. And I loved that Crowe was strictly nuts-and-bolts in this -- ballpoint pen, note pad, shoe leather, just-the-facts, no swaggering-actor crap.

I had been skeptical about the pruning choices in getting the original six episode, 300-minute British miniseries down to two-hours plus. (What is it, 130 minutes?) I've watched the British version, which is obviously a fuller and more detailed meal in some respects.( I loved the relative anonymity of the British actors, the standout being Bill Nighy as the paper's senior editor). The upside is that the honing has demanded a story discipline on the part of McDonald & Co. that kept everything extra disciplined and tightly focused. No time for any funny stuff.

Jack Webb, William Conrad in -30-.

I love that McDonald directed and not Ridley or Tony Scott or (no offense) Paul Greengrass. All of these guys would have made State of Play into something a lot more style-hyper. (And I don't mean this as a putdown -- it's just who they are & what they're expected to do.) They would have flash-edited and whirly-gigged this film into a kind of power-pop fashion statement about breathless shooting styles in the Age of Obama -- agitation and coolness first, newspaper reporting second.

McDonald, appropriately and fittingly, adheres to just the facts. He keeps the visual style moderate and makes the story clear and understandable, the way a good piece of reporting in the N.Y. Times or the Washington Post would be. On top of which McDonald seems to almost go out of his way to avoid the usual urban-thriller elements. Which is my book is a good thing.

Beware of mini-spoiler!: Crowe's shaggy Kodiak bear appearance gets in the way of believing in a subplot about his character having previously had an affair with Affleck's wife, Robin Wright Penn . I've never written a paragraph about Washington, D.C., but it's impossible to buy into the notion of a classy Congressional wife fucking around with an overweight, hippie-haired reporter, even if they've known each other since college.

Helen Mirren brings a certain agitated saracasm to her one-note role as the Globe's editor. Jeff Daniels is droll and fully believable as a senior D.C. legislator who's peripherally involved.

Count me out. Especially after that NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH film which had one thing only going for it (Vera Farmiga's AMAZING turn) and had one of the worst endings in recent memory. This film will make $2 and even fewer people are going to see it.

Remember when Russell Crowe was GOOD? Yeah, been a while. M&C seems like decades ago.

JT- You say that the ending of NBTT was one of the worst endings in recent memory. Others, man, including myself, say it is one of the best. I assure you that this debate will not exist on "State of Play". At least NBTT had an ending that grabbed its own balls and was not a cop-out. If it wasn't such a spoiler i would love to debate it with you.

Furthermore, the film was never released due to the YFG bankruptcy - so attacking it for its bad business is not fair.

Count me in for this one. It seems to have an All the President's Men/Zodiac vibe which I'm digging. Plus, Kevin McDonald's work thus far has been pretty damn solid. Russell is the best "guy's guy" actor we currently have and I always consider his films to be an event.

Serious reporters manage an appearance that allows them to blend in with their backgrounds, whatever those surroundings may be. Crowe's look here would really only fit in at a Lebowski Fest.

Sorry, but that ending was just awful and a cop out. the film had a lot of other problems but that just nailed the coffin shut for me. Again, a so-so movie with an amazing, jaw-dropping performance by VF. Just giv this woman anything she wants. She's aces.

Well, you are right, JT, about Farmiga in the film. had it been released she'd have been in the Oscar as would have Beckinsale.

What I loved about the ending is that, with a blink of an eye, it changed your perception of Beckinsale's motivations and thus what the entire movie was about. Some people love her and some people hate her. That ending may be flawed, but its gutsy and certainly not a cop out.

I don't smell any 'Zodiac' undercurrents -- this isn't an art film -- but if it bears any resemblence to something like 'The Insider' or 'President's Men' it'll be worth watching.

I agree on gloomy box office predix -- maybe $7 million.

Clancy, maybe it depends on how one feels about Beck's character throughout. I couldn't stand her so the ending DID work perfectly for the cunt she was (BTW, when Vera calls her that, it has to be just one of the best times that word's ever been used in film history!).

I really enjoy movies about journalism (Shattered Glass, anyone?).

And you mean $7 million opening weekend? I'd go more with $15 million opening weekend, $40-50 million total domestic box office. But again, as I have commented repeatedly, who cares what any particular movie makes at the box office? I know I don't. Sure, it's fun to guess, but box office has nothing to do with overall quality.

I really want to see Nothing but the Truth and What Doesn't Kill You, both of which drop on DVD on 4/28.

Yeah, JT - that really was a great Farmiga moment - as is every curse she has in the film. I also loved the Alda speech at the SC - amazingly delivered. I don't know, I loved the film and what it had to say about journalism - made more interesting since the writer/director was a successful journalist (in disclosure- I know Lurie from those days. He was kind of an Eve Harrington when he came to town - took the film critic job from my friend at Los Angeles magazine- but ended up being a good guy).

$40 million is more than Duplicity and $50 is more than Michael Clayton, so $40 to $50M appears optimistic. They're trying to sell it as a thriller, but let's face it, it's strictly for the over 30's and that market has spoken. "We're patient. We rent." $33 million.

It'll make no money at the box office, but whatever. Theatrical runs are more like an advance advertisement of the DVD release for this type of film.

Plus with the box office behemoth of Crank: High Voltage stomping on all opposition, it stands no chance.

The affair was a little more believable in the miniseries as it didn't happen until the events being shown, right? Her marriage was strained, and this old friend suddenly came back into her life. Or I am recalling that incorrectly? Cal didn't quite look like a Kodiak bear in that one, however.

I do like the idea of integrating the print vs. online idea, which was not in the original. The James McAvoy character will be missed, though.

With the recent state of the over 35+ thrillers getting burried by stuff like 'Crank 2' and '17 Again' -- I think the trend continues this weekend. Maybe $7 million is too low, but I think its weekend cume is in the ballpark.

Well i think that He keeps the visual style moderate and makes the story clear and understandable, the way a good piece of reporting in the N.Y. Times or the Washington Post would be. On top of which McDonald seems to almost go out of his way to avoid the usual urban-thriller elements. Which is my book is a good thing.

I love Russell in a Beautiful Mind, his best character work by far. He is such a good method actor and he really engages his audience.
