Tough Road
Early last October it was revealed that Jim Sheridan‘s Brothers, a remake of Susanne Bier‘s original 2004 film, was being bumped by distributor MGM out of its 12.4.08 slot to either a late summer or fall ’09 release. Producer Mike DeLuca confirmed this and also told me that the plan was to take the domestic drama to the ’09 Cannes Film Festival.
Then I ran into Sheridan several weeks ago in Manhattan and he told me Cannes was a no-go, due to one or more of the actors (the costars are Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman) either being against promoting the film there or being unavailable for same. And then yesterday came the news that Ryan Kavanaugh‘s Relativity Media has cut a deal to supply Lionsgate with five films annually, and that Brothers will be the first to open under this new pact. Dave McNary‘s 4.27 Variety story said only that Sheridan’s film would be released “later this year,” which doesn’t sound like summer to me.
David Benioff‘s script is about a younger “bad” brother (Gyllenhaal) stepping into the familial shoes of his older “good” brother (Maguire) after the latter disappears during an enemy skirmish in Afghanistan. Portman plays the wife-mother whose loyalties shift, or at least adapt to new realities. Sam Shepard plays Gyllenhaal and Maguire’s dad.
I’m not saying IMDB reader comments can be trusted, but a few correspondents have claimed to have attended research screenings of Brothers in recent months and found it satisfying. This plus the quality of Bier’s film plus Sheridan’s pedigree tells me it must be at least a moderately decent if not better-than-decent film. But there’s always a reason when a movie gets repeatedly postponed and kicked around. Here’s hoping otherwise.
Let’s just hope it’s not Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ 2.
That would be impossible but In America pissed me off too., as much as his early work impresses me.
Brothers, according to Nikki Finke, is going to be released by Lionsgate soon.

Which, if I would have completely read your post, you have also reported.
I need coffee.
I just hope that an unnecessary romantic subplot has NOT been added to this remake. What made Bier’s version so strong and powerful (well, at least one thing) was that the bad-brother and the wife never got-it-on; it was more about friendship and the need for an emotional connection in the face of apparent tragedy than anything elese. Very similar to the relationship between Berry and Del Toro in Bier’s Things We Lost in the Fire, which is in contention as the most underrated movie of the decade. To say I am huge fan of Bier’s work would be an understatement.
And Sheridan, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ notwithstanding, is an excellent filmmaker.
Wells to maxfm: Finke has just posted the press release, and neither she nor it says anything about Brothers being released “soon.” It says Brothers will be the first Relativity Media film out under the Lionsgate deal, but that’s all.
Get Rich or Die Trying was actually a good movie, you guys just hate it simply because 50 Cent was in it, just like a lot of you hate MI3 and Valkyrie solely based on Tom Cruise’s presence in them.
Maxfm to Wells: Well, ok. I added the word “soon.” My bad.
I told you I needed coffee.
Maxfm to Wells (part 2): But if Brothers IS released soon, I reserve the right to utilize Finke’s annoying TOLDJA!
Thank you and goodnight.
Zay: I hated it because it was awful.
I’ll lose my shit to In Da Club , certainly. In this film however, his likeness was akin to that of congealed porridge. Completely unappealing.
The process of it’s congealment is also far more interesting than GRODT could ever hope to be.
Sheridan commands respect for everything else he’s done ( bar In America ) and for his performance in The General , which still makes me laugh.
What’s wrong with In America? I love that movie.
In America is a great movie. Great movie.
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was cliched yet semi-watchable, but in the end, the movie was undone by Fiddy’s horrible acting chops. The guy has got cement for on-screen charisma.
In America isn’t a great movie. It’s an ok , so-so, whatever movie. Paddy Considine is the best thing about it.
The less said about the screenplay, the dialogue, the character development, the accents, Djimon Hounsou, the better.
“Get Rich or Die Trying was actually a good movie, you guys just hate it simply because 50 Cent was in it, just like a lot of you hate MI3 and Valkyrie solely based on Tom Cruise’s presence in them.”
Rather than list all the ways in which ‘Get Rich’ and ‘Valkyrie’ were unsatisfying, I’m just going to say that you only like them because of Messers Cent and Cruise, respectively.
It’s weird that you bring up MI3, since I thought everybody did like MI3. I don’t, but Cruise is pretty good in it.
The Cannes excuse is weird. How much of a hardship is it really? One day they’re just going to CGI stars onto the Croisette.
You’re making up stories and jumping to way too many conclusions here. I personally spoke with someone who was at one of those screenings (Las Vegas) and he raved about the film and told me that it scored very high among the audience.
The reason for the delay was because of this deal that Relativity put together with Lionsgate. They made similar offers to three or four other studios over the past few months, Lionsgate was the company which took them up on it. The deal included Brothers. If they released it before now they would essentially be “dumping it” which makes no sense if they actually believed in the project, which apparently they all do.
They’re waiting to release the film in the fall because they want Oscars, simple as that. You’re seeing something in this whole thing Jeffrey that I don’t see.
Not every delay is because a film stinks. This was never a studio picture, it was made and financed by Relativity. Relativity would ultimately decide when was the best time for THEM to release the movie which will earn them maximum benefit. This is it.
dogcatcher,
Stop making facts up, will you? We know how to use Google.
Right Stuff,
Which facts did I make up exactly?
Fact, Relativity has been shopping a four-to-five picture deal to several studios over the past few months.
Fact, included as part of this package was “Brothers.”
Fact, Relativity this week signed a deal with Lionsgate to produce four to five pictures a year for them.
Fact, included as part of this deal was the movie, “Brothers.”
Fact, early test screenings for the movie were very positive.
What “facts” are you aware of that you found on “google” which contradicts any of that?
Sorry dogcatcher,
you and your “facts” are not worth wasting time on.
right stuff,
Uh, okay.
Would you care to expand on which “fact” you have issues with? Let’s start there, because so far you haven’t provided anything at all, not even an opinion actually.
So let’s start by having you explain what YOU think is happening because, honestly, I don’t understand what your problem is.
