Gun Metal

Listening to conservatives play the race card in attacking the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor, I’ve been marveling at just how self-destructive they’ve become,” Arianna Huffington wrote last night.

“Republicans have to know how bad this is for their party — especially given the shifting demographics in America. The Hispanic vote was a deciding factor in Obama’s win, so the last thing the GOP needs is to be alienating Hispanic voters. BUT THEY JUST CAN’T HELP THEMSELVES!

“It reminds me of Robert Downey Jr.‘s quote after his umpteenth drug relapse: ‘It is like I have a shotgun in my mouth, and I’ve got my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of gun metal.’ The GOP attack dogs have an electoral shotgun in their mouth — and they’re addicted to the taste of it.”

  • Deathtongue_Groupie

Funny, where was this “outrage” when conservative nominees to the court voiced the exact same sentiments about “empathy” and ethnic background?

It’s not gun metal they’re addicted to, it’s jaw-dropping hypocrisy.

  • lonniechung

Lately the right-wing’s comments have been so absurd that I’m beginning to feel like they have some sort of plan. Creepy.

  • mccool

The implication here from Huffington is that politicians should be overtly political and say anything that will help keep them in office or suppress any thoughts that may keep them out. That, to me, is ten-fold more disturbing and disgusting than any of the actual boorish ideas and attacks from the republicans.

  • Sabina E

Republicans are so pathetic, it’s laughable.

  • Mowkeka

    She’s Hispanic.

    She’s a woman.

Therefore, she’s qualified. End of story. Get in line Republicans.

  • SpinDozer

‘The implication here from Huffington is that politicians should be overtly political and say anything that will help keep them in office or suppress any thoughts that may keep them out.’

Really? Pretty sure that politicians are overtly political and say anything that will help keep them in office or suppress any thoughts that may keep them out. Look at Larry Craig, and other homophobic (public) Gay (private) Pols for a rather easy example.

The fact that there are voters naive enough to believe that pols don’t say anything that will help keep them in office or that they vote for bills they really oppose and against bills they really support and aren’t entirely truthful about what they really think should be disturbing, and it is, but its also unsurprising.

Perhaps you’re projection about Huff’s intended message is wishful thinking on your part?

  • Wrecktem

“The implication here from Huffington is that politicians should be overtly political and say anything that will help keep them in office or suppress any thoughts that may keep them out.”

Um. They’re politicians. By definition, they are political. By job description, they do things to try to stay in office and avoid doing things that may keep them out.

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio??

So according to Spin and Wreck, everything Obama says is a ploy to win a second term, not an actual earnest attempt to right the ship? I’m sorry, I reject that notion.

And if we all despise Republicans so much, why do we insist on telling them how to fix their party?? Let it go down in flames! That would require the pseudo-intellectual left, of which Huff is one, to stop letting the world know how smart it is. Wishful thinking indeed.

“So according to Spin and Wreck, everything Obama says is a ploy to win a second term, not an actual earnest attempt to right the ship? I’m sorry, I reject that notion.”

No, of course not. But, everything Obama says is judged in political terms, and the ongoing narrative will be used in the next election. That’s why Davd Axelrod has a corner office in the west wing. Every decision he makes has to not only be viewed as how it’ll affect policy, but also how it’ll affect the upcoming election. If you live in a democracy, that’s what happens.

  • Travis Crabtree

    Just remember……

You’re really only black, a woman, a Latino, etc. if you’re a Democrat!

(People like Condi Rice, Sandra Day O’Connor and Miguel Estrada don’t count…. nothing historic there….move along….)

  • Nate West

You’re really only black, a woman, a Latino, etc. if you’re a Democrat! People like Condi Rice, Sandra Day O’Connor and Miguel Estrada don’t count….

Are you ten years old? Not a single Democratic senator voted against the confirmation of Sandra Day O’Connor. Nobody denies the historic nature of her selection.

  • Travis Crabtree

No, I am not ten years old.

My point is, Democrats have been making a habit of playing Identity Politics for years. (remember ’92? the “year of the woman”?)

If Bill Clinton had appointed the first black Sec. of State, let alone the first black woman Sec. State, we would’ve been hearing endlessly about the “historic nature” of said pick. As it were, (in the case of Powell and Rice), the general consensus was “eh, whatever”.

That’s also why when a minority or a woman reaches or has the chance to reach a high profile in the Republican party it drives Liberals crazy. “Hey, WE’RE the party of women/minorities!”

If Republicans had said HALF the things about Palin, Clarence Thomas, Katherine Harris, etc. that people on the left said / continue to say about them they’d be permanently banned from public life. (or something like that)

“content of their character”, that sort of thing

  • SpinDozer

    So according to …

You should stop trying to interpret simple ideas, cos you really suck at it. There’s no real reason to think that because some of what Obama says is a ploy to win a second term, not an actual earnest attempt to right the ship that he’s not trying to right the ship. Its not a zero-sum game. The proposition that one will do what is necessary to win re-election is not necessarilly mutually exclusive of trying to ‘right the ship’ or any number of other political and policy positions.

And if we all despise Republicans so much, why do we insist on telling them how to fix their party??

Actually, I don’t despise them (I voted for one in the last election) I despise what the leadership of the party has done and continues to do which is to give primacy to the irrational in political expression.

That would require the pseudo-intellectual left, of which Huff is one, to stop letting the world know how smart it is.

I’m pretty sure Huff isn’t showing the world how smart she is but how dumb her opponents are…point recorded.

  • DeeZee

mccool: “So according to Spin and Wreck, everything Obama says is a ploy to win a second term, not an actual earnest attempt to right the ship? I’m sorry, I reject that notion.”

I think whatever Obama’s saying or doing right now is an attempt to avoid another ’94-style mid-term coup in 2010. He’s probably concerned about ‘012, too, but the Republicans are going to have their work cut out for them in picking their next challenger for that race.

“And if we all despise Republicans so much, why do we insist on telling them how to fix their party?? Let it go down in flames!”

We’re just giving them some helpful advice, in hopes that they can still retain whatever good will they have left from the Reagan years. Whether or not they want it is up to them.

Travis: ‘That’s also why when a minority or a woman reaches or has the chance to reach a high profile in the Republican party it drives Liberals crazy. “Hey, WE’RE the party of women/minorities!”‘

No, it just annoys us that a party which hates affirmative action likes embracing it in its political picks.

“If Republicans had said HALF the things about Palin, Clarence Thomas, Katherine Harris, etc. that people on the left said / continue to say about them they’d be permanently banned from public life. (or something like that)”

I dunno. I don’t remember Dems ever attacking Palin with misogynist barbs or going after Thomas, because of his “qualifications”.

  • Gordon27

“If Republicans had said HALF the things about Palin, Clarence Thomas, Katherine Harris, etc. that people on the left said / continue to say about them they’d be permanently banned from public life. (or something like that)”

The amazing thing, to me, about idiotic Republicans who repeat stuff like this is that they always say the same thing. “If just nominating a minority is enough, then why did they criticize our minorities when we nominated them?”

They consistently assume the first part — it’s their assumption as to why liberals like specific candidates, which has no basis in reality — and then try to “disprove” the first part by laying out the second part. It’s hilarious. It’s the same argument every time, and it’s so entrenched they don’t see how stupid it is.

  • bluetide

Mowkeka, she is an exceptionally qualified candidate because of her experiences as an attorney, a prosecutor, a trial judge, and a federal appellate judge period. Her race and sex have nothing to do with her qualifications. The fact that President Obama did not let race and gender get in the way of appointing the most qualified candidate is a great step forward. If you can think of a more qualified candidate, please let us know.
