Eternal Cage
In recognition of Bernie Madoff having been sentenced to 150 years behind bars, here’s a re-link to that 3.14.09 piece about how I would have escaped and cavorted it if I’d been in Bernie’s shoes. Excerpt: “I’d hire three full-time prostitutes to travel with me, but they’d have to be prostitutes who know how to sail.”
Why didn’t Madoff get 500 years? Or a thousand? I’ve always loved the poetic ring of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing, which is the title of a 1932 Michael Curtiz crime-prison drama with Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis. It comes from author Lewis E. Lawes‘s 1932 novel.
The guy’s 71. He’ll die in prison within 10 years.
He lived the glamorous life for decades and devastated countless families, so justice hasn’t been served. It could never be.
In addition, the man could not have acted alone. Hopefully, all that were involved will get their day too.
I was talking with my wife the other day and I asked what she thought we could retire on. I’m in my early 40s and I said 3 million would be enough.
Its never enough for these greedy bastards.
That reverie about Jeff going on the lam is one of my all-time favorite Wellsian posts.
Jeff would easily be found at an FBI Sting masquerading as a ‘Hurt Locker’ film festival in Paraguay.
Stringer: He’s taking the fall, because he was the only one who was caught, and/or he didn’t manage to buy out the right judges and politicians.
Why isn’t he being put to work? He’s a financial genius, so why not put him to work helping to boost/stabilize/fix the financial situations of every one of those charities he’s crippled?
He could be of actual value to those he’s hurt instead of just being a sack of flesh in an orange jumpsuit waiting to die…
No, Pet. I wouldn’t trust him to operate the self-checkout machine at the supermarket. Besides, he was president of NASDAQ or something like that. Lot of good he did there, the damn criminal.
Financial genius? More like genius con man… we could put him to work, but it wouldn’t be to get us out of any financial quagmires.
Well, FDR hired Kennedy’s dad to help us come up with better regulation, even though he gamed the system, too. So hiring Madoff for something similar, especially since he’s been doing it for a lot longer, wouldn’t be that out-of-the-question.
I think giving him toilet scrubbing duty is way too good for him.
He should be in solitary for the rest of his life and make him watch a loop of Tranformers 2 over and over again. If he offs himself, then so be it.
