Finally Franken
It only took the Minnesota Supreme Court seven and three-quarter months to hear the arguments, evaluate the data and decide that Al Franken should be certified as the winner of that state’s ridiculously prolonged Senate race. May the scumbag Republicans who goaded Norm Coleman, Franken’s vanquished Senate race opponent, into contesting this thing well past the point of rational dispute suffer some form of payback.
The N.Y. Times is reporting that Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, whom I suspect has been a secret go-along scumbag in this affair, “had indicated as late as Monday that he was willing to certify Mr. Franken as the winner once the state’s highest court decided the recount and Mr. Coleman’s battle. On CNN on Sunday, Mr. Pawlenty said: ‘I’m prepared to sign it as soon as they give the green light.’”
Coleman should have done the gentlemanly thing and bailed on this thing months ago. I wouldn’t put it past the Republican hardhead machine to keep pushing because they’re animals and incapable of showing shame. Franken however, does finally seem poised to become the 60th Democratic Senator.
America… Fuck Yeah!!!!
“scumbag Republicans”
When it comes to contesting elections, they’re ALL scumbags, and you damn well know it.
Now there’s no excuse for the Dem’s not to pass through a Healthcare reform package. The ball’s in their court. They fuck up, GOP takes it in 2012, guaranteed. Liberals and Independants are fed up, we want change NOW. Not tomorrow, not next week — NOW!!!! Obama thinks he can coast on his celebrity it would behoove anyone within his administration to remind him that the honeymoon is now over. And I think Franken will have an unfiltered voice calling bs on both sides of the aisle. This is good for the nation.
The results are what they are. Game over. But how about a little consistency?
Are you willing to tell me that if it were the exact same situation only the names were reversed you’d be saying the same thing?
Really?
You’re telling me that you wouldn’t be talking about how Coleman and the evil Republicans were stealing the election (like they’re so want to do) and conveniently “finding” ballots when the situation called for it?
Do you expect me to believe that you would be saying, “hey, get over it, Al. You lost.”?
Of course the Republicans were going to fight it. The majority of the Senate was on the line.
Senator Franken. Okay. I’m glad it’s over.
Democrats shouldn’t go crazy celebrating, though. Be careful what you wish for. Franken, (though talented and funny) is a notorious hot head and unrepentant asshole. Ask (non-conservative) Janeane Garofalo. Just hope he keeps a low profile and doesn’t become a walking GOP recruitment poster.
By the way. I saw “The Hurt Locker” yesterday at the Arclight. (Jeff wasn’t there…I looked)
Really good. Still thinking about it. VERY good.
Sadly, though, I got a glimpse of the hell that makes up the movie going public.
On the way out three men in their 20′s were walking in front of me and talking about the film they just saw. It went like this-
“What you think, foo?”
“It was a’ight, foo. I slept through part of it, foo.”
“Foo, you slept through most it. I heard you snoring, foo.”
“I almost went out, too. Foo that shit was fucked up. Part of that shit was boring, foo.”
“Do you expect me to believe that you would be saying, “hey, get over it, Al. You lost.”?”
If Gore suddenly was certified by a Supreme Court with two of the nominees picked by his father, won a state his brother happened to be governor of, and scrubbed anyone who had the same surname of felons off the voter rolls, sure.
I just checked the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and it says the judges said Al Franken is entitled to an election certificate “but they did not directly order Pawlenty to issue one.” I get NBC and CBS from Minneapolis on my cable system and saw most of the campaign commericals. At one point the Republic senate campaign office was running one calling Franken unfit for office because of countless sins against decency. Meanwhile Coleman was running a warm and fuzzy “can’t we all get along ” one, trying to portray himself as one of the nicest people in the world.
“Are you willing to tell me that if it were the exact same situation only the names were reversed you’d be saying the same thing?”
Guilty as charged, which is why I’ve never said much about the Coleman/Franken affair. I do think Coleman is a special kind of douchebag, based his behavior following Paul Wellstone’s death, but that is beside the point.
“Do you expect me to believe that you would be saying, “hey, get over it, Al. You lost.”? ”
At first reading I thought you were talking about Al Gore, not Al Franken.
I seem to remember a lot of Republicans saying “hey, get over it, Al” to Al Gore long before Scalia, O’Connor, et al. ended the recount to install Bush.
Coleman has had 7 months to make his case. He lost over and over again.
‘The majority of the Senate was on the line.’
No, no it wasn’t. A filibusterproof senate wasn’t on the line either, however every vote a party secures between majority and filibuster proof majority is an important one, and depriving the majority of a non-blue dog vote for seven months was was why Coleman/RNC fought this, they wanted to derail BHO early and often.
Franken finally gets his Senate seat…just days before the July 4th recess.
Something smells here, and it isn’t the liedercranz.
Here in Oregon, we just finished up our legislative session and I have to tell you that the Democratically controlled legislature sucked. Thy passed some horrible business and agricultural unfriendly laws, which might make our economic situation worse. Their environmental laws weren’t much better. I hope Congress gets it right, but I’m not too hopeful anymore.
” Be careful what you wish for. Franken, (though talented and funny) is a notorious hot head and unrepentant asshole.”
If this is true, he’ll make a perfect senator.
‘Be careful what you wish for. Franken, (though talented and funny) is a notorious hot head and unrepentant asshole.
If this is true, he’ll make a perfect senator.’
If he should prove to be extremely stupid as well, he’d be eligible for one of Oklahoma’s senate seats.
And to think I saw him in Chuckles Comedy Club not that long ago.
